Growing Ideas Studio in Art students at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus recently found out what it would be like to work as architects. The ninth-graders let their imaginations run wild as they designed and built treehouses. Each student in Beth Adler’s class began by selecting a geometric shape
for their design, creating a floor plan and completing an elevation drawing in pencil, which showed what the structure would look like on the outside. They built models from materials found at home and were encouraged to use natural products. For finishing touches, they added items like seashells,

beads, leaves, flowers and miniature umbrellas. “The students are so creative and inventive,” said Ms. Adler, noting the fun features they included like balconies and spiral staircases. “Their use of found objects is amazing and the attention to detail is very present.”
Art students have been demonstrating their creativity in new ways at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Led by teacher Claire Merz, they have been building upon their existing art skills by using new materials and trying new techniques. Fifthand sixth-graders created Bas-relief sculptures using cardboard, yarn, wood bits, foil and markers. The children
used their knowledge of line and space to create their designs. “Wild Things” was the theme of a project that firstand second-graders completed using their imaginations and paint pens. The students read Maurice Sendak’s book “Where the Wild Things Are,” then created their own portraits of monsters. Inspired by Heather Galler’s folk art landscapes, fourth-
and fifth-graders created their own pictures using markers, crayons and watercolor paint following a crayon resist technique. “It’s exciting to see how the students challenge themselves and take these ideas and go farther with it,” said Ms. Merz, who had displayed the work on bulletin boards throughout the school. “Art is a class that they are always excited to come to.”

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson reminds residents that the early sale of seasonal beach stickers begins on Saturday, May 13th. Beginning that day, Town residents may choose to get their beach stickers at certain locations ahead of time to avoid the rush during the Memorial Day weekend when some Town of Oyster Bay beaches will open for weekends only. “Many of us eagerly look forward to Memorial Day weekend for the first opportunity to enjoy a fun day at the beach,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “By purchasing a Town beach sticker in advance of the beaches opening, you can avoid hitting long lines at the start of the beach season and be able to spend more time in the sand.” The Councilwoman noted that beach stickers will be on sale daily, beginning on May 13th, at Tobay Beach, John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Please note that stickers are NOT available at Town Hall. Staying Power I recently had the opportunity to attend a journalism forum at The Paley Center for Media in Manhattan. Titled “The Future of Local News: Trust, Truth & The Bottom Line,” this summit brought together some of the best and the brightest in the industry to discuss what many have summarily dismissed as a dying field. I am happy to report that, after listening to several engaging panels touching on everything from politics to nonprofit upstarts to the pros and cons of social media in the information age, I came away with an even deeper sense of confidence that journalism is, in fact, here to stay. Sure, the fourth estate may have hit some bumps in the road of late; but, in essence, these

obstacles have only helped those truly reputable media outlets to gain a stronger foothold. Too much of anything is a bad thing; this is a commonly held opinion. But, to be able to harness this influx of information and utilize it in such a way that is beneficial, well, that is a opportunity that should not be squandered. It may take time and research to discern what is truly valuable and accurate information, but why shouldn’t we devote that kind of effort to educating ourselves? It hardly seems a steep price to pay, in my estimation. The hope is that, as the sources of “news” multiply and morph, future generations will increasingly become experts at determining what
is reliable. Not to throw the phrase back in my day around too lightly but… back when I was in college, media was pretty much defined as print or broadcast; newspapers, magazines, television, radio. Social media was only just beginning to take off, and its potential as a legitimate source of news – breaking or otherwise – was as yet unanticipated. Fast forward to the present day, when your average elementary school student is “plugged in” to his/her own cell phone throughout the day. My, how times have changed. Regardless of whether we support this development, the fact is - it’s happening. Best to jump on board and learn to harness the power of the media. It’s here to stay.

Massapequa Vanguard Massapequa UFSD student Tara Haskell was honored recently for breaking new ground in career and technical education (CTE). Tara, who is a personal trainer, exercise science student at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, earned the 2017 Vanguard Award for seeking academic and
career paths that defy conventional gender roles. The award recognizes exceptional students enrolled in CTE programs that prepare them for nontraditional careers. The Vanguard Award was created by the Nontraditional Employment and Training (NET) Project, which
provides statewide assistance to CTE institutions that offer nontraditional programs. NET is funded through the New York State Education Department and is committed to preparing students for the workforce through the promotion of gender-neutral educational strategies and practices.

A New Twist Students at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District used technology to put a new twist on old stories. To prepare for Greek Day, an event that featured food, costumes and a scaled-down version of the Olympics, sixth-graders made their own commercials featuring Greek gods and goddesses. Each
student picked a figure from Greek mythology and had them promote a product or service that was based on their characteristics. For example, the goddess of love and beauty inspired Aphrodite’s Flower Shop, and Poseidon’s Shrimp paid tribute to the god of the sea. The students recorded their short commercials
on Chromebooks through Flipgrid, a digital collaboration platform that allows for the easy creation and sharing of videos. The project was spearheaded by sixth-grader teacher Jennifer D’Angelo, technology learning coach Vickie Ahearn and computer teaching assistant Donna Meyer.
