Readers have been writing in lately, inquiring as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing, my latest exploits… So I’m here, as requested, to fill you all in on my comings and goings – well, as much as one can come and go in the confines of a one-gallon aquarium, but you know… The latest bit of exciting news – potentially, anyway – is my Human’s impending purchase of a friend for me! Yes, that’s right, Buddy the Betta will soon be accompanied by the likes of a small, colorful (but not too colorful), aquatic snail. I’m thinking purple, to

complement my gorgeous aqua fins. The best part is that, in addition to having a companion for those ohso-long days when my Human leaves me to my own devices, my new little friend can also serve as a portable vacuum cleaner of sorts. With my larger residence, the maintenance can be a bit much, and I do like immaculate living quarters. I’ve even picked out a name – “Squeegee.” Oh what fun we will have together, so long as he keeps those long tentacles off my delicate fins, of course... and away from my food… and off of my favorite bedtime leaf… and, well, we’ll see how it

goes. This could be shortlived. Other than that, life in the bowl is pretty much status quo. I’m going on 15 months old, still as vibrant and beautiful (and humble) as ever, and my Human has graduated to feeding me twice a day – small portions, but still, I’ll take what I can get. It’s a good life – especially when Grammy comes to visit and makes kissy-faces at me. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new googly-eyed roommate. Massapequa High School junior Hope Breslin was named Gatorade New York Girls Soccer Player of the Year. The award, presented by The Gatorade Company in collaboration with USA TODAY High School Sports, distinguishes Hope as New York’s best high school girls soccer player and recognizes high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. The honor also places her as a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year award to

“Hope scored the winning goal in the New York State Championship game; she has great foot skills and is a very diverse player; she just keeps getting better and better,” said Coach Bruce Stegner. “For her to win this award as a junior is a huge accomplishment.” Hope said of the award, “When I found out I was so excited. This award means a lot to me, not only on an individual level, but for my team as a whole, which has been so successful. We all work together so

Recently, Wantagh’s Troop 96 ventured off to Boston and camped at Camp Sayre, also know as New England Base Camp. They started off with a visit to the Boston Museum of Science. While there, they saw an IMAX movie called National Parks Adventure and saw the various exhibits in the museum. Those exhibits included the Hall of

Human Life, The Theater of Electricity, Frogs: A Chorus of Colors and many others. The next day, they hit the Freedom Trail. They hiked from Boston Commons all the way to the USS Constitution “Old Ironsides.” Along the way, they saw various burial grounds, the site of the Boston Massacre, Faneuil Hall, Paul Revere’s

House, The Old North Church and the Bunker Hill Monument. While on Bunker Hill, there was a man dressed in period attire that explained what happened on Bunker Hill. He even shot off a gun to show them how the gun worked. The boys all enjoyed lunch at Quincy Market. It was a fantastic, fun and educational trip.

Voices Guiding Choices Red Watch Band and Active Minds Club members from the Massapequa High SchoolAmes Campus participated in the first “Voices Guiding Choices” Prevention Summit at Adelphi University with the goal of learning optimal ways to integrate substance abuse prevention services into schools. The students met with staff and students from other Long Island school districts to discuss their current school experiences, best practices and ideas on new prevention innovations. “The Massapequa School

District is at the forefront of offering prevention programs to students,” said Kimberley Hession, Ames Campus social worker. “This year, over 70 students in grades 9-12 were trained through the Red Watch Band program, a Stony Brook Universitydeveloped school initiative designed to help bystanders learn to effectively respond to alcohol-related emergencies.” To date, under the advisement of Massapequa High School social worker Joanne Waters and Hession, the district has trained more than 300 students in

the program. In addition, Hession and the Ames students spearheaded the development of a Massapequa chapter of the Active Minds Club, a nationwide mental health awareness club. Primarily, student members learn the importance of mental health issues and the connections they have to substance abuse among young people. Hession and Waters are also active members of the Massapequa Takes Action (MTA) Coalition which supports prevention efforts within the school and community.

Salina, Jr., Ed.D said he was honored that his District’s athletic center will be named in Detective Moore’s honor. “Brian will always be one of Plainedge’s own and we can think of nothing more

fitting than to have the district’s athletic center forever bear his name,” Dr. Salina said. “He played ball and attended school on the very grounds where this building is situated. The entire Plainedge community has been personally touched by Detective Moore and what he represented. This building will stand as a permanent testament to his legacy of dedicated service.” Detective Moore paid the ultimate price serving and protecting others. Beach Sticker Sale The early sale of seasonal beach stickers begins Saturday, May 14th. Beginning that day, Town residents may choose to get their beach stickers at certain locations ahead of time to avoid the rush during the Memorial Day weekend when some Town of Oyster Bay beaches will open for weekends only. Many residents eagerly look forward to Memorial Day weekend when they will have the first opportunity to enjoy the beautiful beaches that we have here in the Town of Oyster Bay. By purchasing a Town beach sticker in advance of the beaches opening, Town residents will avoid having to wait in line to purchase a sticker during the first few weekends of the beach season and be able to spend more time in the sand.

Beach stickers will be on sale daily, beginning on May 14th, at Tobay Beach, John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Please note that stickers are NOT available at Town Hall. In order to purchase a beach sticker, residents must bring their driver’s license and vehicle registration and must be in the vehicle they will use to drive to the beach since stickers are placed on the vehicle at the time of purchase. Only residents may purchase beach stickers for Town of Oyster Bay Beaches. Seasonal stickers are $60, which pay for themselves following three visits.

The sticker is acceptable at all Town of Oyster Bay beaches, so residents with beach stickers will have the opportunity to really enjoy the wonderful beaches in the Town of Oyster Bay all summer long. Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beaches will open for weekends only beginning Saturday, May 28th. All Town of Oyster Bay beaches will open seven days a week beginning on Saturday, June 25th. The beaches will remain open through Labor Day, Monday, September 5th.
