I’m sorry, this seat is taken. We’ve all done it. In a crowded movie theatre, a packed-to-capacity train… sometimes, our desire for personal space wins out over common courtesy. I’m not proud of it, but, well, I’m not entirely ashamed of it either. Case in point: Just last week, my cousin and I ventured out to one of several opening night screenings of The Avengers, Marvel’s latest in a long line of comic-inspired blockbusters. Like most others in attendance, we arrived at the theatre a full 45 minutes before show time in order to avoid sitting in the front row, straining to

see the top of the screen. After scoring two relatively centered seats in the last row, I strategically placed my jacket and pocketbook on the neighboring chair. Fortyfive minutes elapsed. The theatre filled in quickly, but there were still plenty of other options aside from the one single seat I had “saved.” About 20 minutes into the previews, there it was – two stragglers wandered in, loudly discussing where to sit, with one pointing out several suitable options as the other continued to climb up to the last row, our row. “Is that seat taken?” the one, more irritating individual bellowed, while literally standing in front of

me, I might add. I glanced at my jacket and pocketbook, briefly considered moving it aside, then decided against it. “No, sorry, someone is coming,” I replied blandly. Even later than you, if that’s possible, I mentally added. He looked at me doubtfully, then did an about face and headed back to another seat further down the aisle. I glanced at my cousin and whispered, “So much for that theory – now he’s going to see no one’s coming. Whoops. Perhaps if he didn’t arrive after the opening credits…” And with that, I settled back into my seat with my popcorn, my personal space preserved. Obnoxious? Sure. Worth it? You bet.

Three Massapequa School District staff members and a longtime district volunteer were honored for their shining contributions to education excellence during SCOPE Education Service’s 14th Annual School District Awards Dinner. The non-profit organization, which provides educational support services to school districts, presented a SCOPE 2015 Award of Excellence to Massapequa School District’s Deputy Superintendent Alan Adcock, Massapequa High School Special Education teacher Elizabeth Morelli, Massapequa High School Head Cook Maria Piantanida, and longtime Budget and Finance Committee member Sam Astrof. “These members of our Massapequa family are truly dedicated and talented individuals who shine brilliantly as models of educational excellence,” said Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis. Deputy Superintendent Alan Adcock has led the Massapequa Public Schools through challenging economic times since 1999 by sculpting fiscally sound budgets while preserving a solid educational program. He is credited with implementing financial procedures and policies that have maintained the highest level of security and accountability. “With a smile on his face, he leads by example; setting the stage for excellence. Whether facilitating the Budget and Finance Committee or building a well-balanced budget, Mr. Adcock sets the gold star standard,” his

nominator wrote to the SCOPE selection committee. Elizabeth Morelli has served as a special education teacher in the Massapequa Public Schools for more than a decade. Among her many accomplishments is the development of the Berner Middle School Buddies Club, a student organization that promotes kindness, respect and acceptance. She has been central to the development and implementation of a variety of

programs that support students with disabilities, and encourages good character and tolerance among the general education student population. She is also a staunch supporter of the Massapequa SEPTA and often serves as a trusted liaison to parents who are dealing with highly challenging parenting issues and concerns. Maria Piantanida quickly moved up from food service

Shining Stars worker to head cook after being hired in 2002, and the reasons are clear. Her kitchen is well known for its organization and cleanliness; she keeps detailed records for all production and financial matters, and is conscientious in dealing with each and every student that comes through her cafeteria. Putting nutrition first, she consistently offers up fresh fruits and vegetables to her clientele. She is also an integral part of a new “Breakfast & Lunch Delivery” program which enlists the help of the Special Education Department, and runs a successful Thanksgiving pie sale at the high school. Described as one of the hardest working, most dedicated volunteers in the community, Sam Astrof has served as a valued member of the Board of Education’s Budget and Finance Committee for the past 24 years, and serves on the Audit Committee as well as other district-focused committees. An “out-of-the-box” thinker, he is known for continuously seeking creative approaches to solve complex issues. As a former partner of the financial services firm, Ernst & Young, LLP and Chief Financial Officer of two prominent notfor-profit organizations, his vast financial experience and dedication has greatly assisted the Massapequa Schools in implementing a successful financial plan. Congratulations to all the honorees!

Unqua Elementary School teacher Amy Kanavy-Curry was named recipient of the Margaret Simon Award for Excellence in Elementary Social Studies Education by the Long Island Council for the Social Studies. Kanavy-Curry is the first elementary teacher in Massapequa to be recognized for this

award and will receive it during a ceremony at the Upsky Hotel in Hauppauge, May 28th. As an educator at Unqua for 16 years, and the designated sixth-grade social studies teacher there, Kanavy-Curry said she feels very lucky to be honored in this manner. “As educators, we are often rewarded by the

reaction of the children we teach, but it is far less common to be honored or recognized by people in the same profession,” she said. “I like to think I share this award with all the people I work with and have worked with in Massapequa. We are a family and a lot of people have supported and inspired me along the way.” Kanavy-Curry was nominated for the award by Brian Dowd, the district’s curriculum associate for social studies, K-12, who called her the “go-to” teacher for social studies teachers in the district’s five other elementary schools. “Amy willingly offers her advice and expertise and is a lifeline for them,” he said. In describing her classroom, he said, “One of the instructional shifts fostered by the new social studies frameworks,

adopted in 2014, is that students should ‘do’ social studies not just be told about it. Amy’s students have been ‘doing’ social studies since Amy became the designated social studies teacher at Unqua. It is rare that the students aren’t engaged in some activity making social studies come alive for them and making the lessons memorable.” Kanavy-Curry said she keeps her students engaged by making teaching “fun.” “I try to get the children to draw conclusions, make inferences and read as much, and as often as possible,” she explained. “When teaching Ancient History, students act out plays, do yoga, meditate, examine artifacts, simulate archaeological digs, perform court cases, pretend to be monks, eat Greek food, dress up like gods and goddesses and try to convince the class

who should be the next patron god.” Because of her efforts, she experienced many proud moments where past students have reached out to her to express how much they loved her social studies class. “Two years ago, a former student, Morgan Daly, who is currently studying at The Juilliard School of Music, sent me a letter. During superstorm Sandy her house had been flooded and while rummaging through the family’s belongings, she had come across a huge mosaic that the sixthgrade students had made together,” she said. “I had raffled it off at the end of the year and she won the art project. She mailed it to me with a letter about how much the project meant to her, thanking me for being her teacher. It was so heartwarming to hear from her after

so much time and know that she still remembered what we did so long ago.” Kanavy-Curry, who earned a B.S. in Elementary Education and a M.S. in Reading from Long Island University at C.W. Post, is a LICSS member as well as a certified yoga instructor. She also can relate to her student’s experience with superstorm Sandy as her home in Seaford was destroyed, then finally sold at the end of 2014. She is currently in the process of finding a new home.

Saturday, May 9th, marks the 23rd anniversary of America’s largest-single day of giving - the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive in Partnership with the U.S. Postal Service, Feeding America, United Way and other partners. Currently, 49 million Americans - 1 in 6 - are unsure where their next meal is coming from. Sixteen million are children who feel hunger’s impact on their overall health and ability to perform in school. And nearly 5 million seniors over age 60 are food insecure, with many who live on fixed incomes often too embarrassed to ask for help. In 2014, over 72 million pounds of food was collected by Postal carriers nationally, feeding an estimated 30 million people. Over the course of the 22-year history, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has collected well over one billion pounds of food. The food drive’s timing is crucial. Food banks and pantries often receive the

majority of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. By springtime, many pantries are depleted, entering the summer low on supplies at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available to children in
