Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia invites residents to get their cameras ready and to submit their favorite photos to the Town of Oyster Bay for use in future publications. “The Town of Oyster Bay accepts photos from residents all year, and the spring season presents a great opportunity to take some beautiful pictures throughout our communities,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “We highlight resident submissions in a variety of ways, including in Town literature, the Town’s website or Facebook page, or in other Town publications.” The Councilwoman went on to say that photos must be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but professionally developed photos, not
inkjet printouts, may also be submitted. E-mailed photos, preferably in a jpeg format, should be sent to the Town’s Public Information Office at p h o t o s @ o y s t e r b a y - n y. gov. Printed photographs should be mailed to Oyster Bay Town Hall, Attention Public Information Office, Calendar Photo Submissions, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Aiming High On a brisk but sunny afternoon, members of the Science Club at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus watched their rockets rise and fall, the culmination of weeks of planning and creating. The ninth-graders recently launched their soda bottle rockets on the back-field after school and competed to see whose could stay up the longest.
Even the best-designed creations were only airborne a mere fraction of the time the rockets took to build. The lessons in physics, engineering and aerodynamics, along with the problem-solving skills developed, made it all worthwhile. Students worked individually or in teams under the direction of science teachers Nicholas
Donohue and Maureen Burke. Once they reached the field, they filled their bottles halfway with water. The rockets were then pressurized and launched. Each device also carried an egg, as students had to come up with a design that could protect it upon the rocket’s impact with the ground.

In Meggin Hall’s kindergarten class, students used the SmartBoard to sort objects based on whether they should be trashed, recycled or composted. They also wrote sentences about how they could help the planet. Mary Upton’s secondgraders created cinquain poems — verses of five
lines that don’t rhyme — and made mobiles listing ways to protect the Earth. They listened to several books including Schim Schimmel’s “Dear Children of the Earth,” Gail Gibbon’s “Recycle!” and Todd Parr’s “The Earth Book.” Tara Pistillo read “Earth Day Hooray!” to her firstgrade students and led a class discussion on recycling.

Morning Mindset “Morning is an important time of day, because how you spend your morning can often tell you what kind of day you are going to have.” ~ Lemony Snicket We all have our routines. Me, I find particular solace in the schedules of daily life more so than most. My mornings, especially, tend to dictate the tone of the afternoon and evening. This is both good and bad, of course. A missed wake-up alarm, a favorite pair of jeans in the laundry, no more milk in the fridge… all can lead to being thrown off track and sent on your way in a state of disarray. Whereas, when things run like clockwork, the feeling tends to be more of the notion that nothing can stand in the way of productivity. Who knew the snooze button could hold so much power? In lieu of last week’s column
ruminating on the power of the almighty calendar and its tendency to dictate our schedules to the point that we no longer can differentiate those things we truly enjoy doing from those that are pure obligation, I received several kind letters from readers expressing their complete agreement that their lives, too, have been taken over by those tiny square boxes. One woman even went so far as to recommend a book, “Quiet Mind,” which suggests that we would all be better served by taking a moment to sit back and relax, to find an hour of peace in which to clear our minds of the clutter that accumulates over the course of day after day spent running from one task to the next. The idea is to eventually, over time, expand upon this hour and have its influence extend throughout the entire day. How nice that would be.

It all begins with one moment, whether it is rising early to see the sun come up over the Great South Bay, or taking the extra time to prepare a homemade breakfast during the rush of the week, or even driving the scenic route to work. Little things add up to big things, and big things become a way of living, day by day. There is ample benefit to be found in making that effort. It is not a perfect process, to be sure. There will still be those days when the snooze button seems the most viable option, when skipping breakfast and running out the door to sit in traffic is how you are destined to spend your morning. But that doesn’t have to dictate the tone of the entire day. Pop a CD in, turn up the volume, sit back and enjoy the ride. There are miles to go before you sleep.

The Town of Oyster Bay is seeking Activities Specialists for its Group Activities Program (GAP) Summer Day Camp, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Louis B. Imbroto announced. The Town has openings at its camp at SyossetWoodbury Community Park, which will be held from July 5th, 2017 through August 11th, 2017 between the hours of 9:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. “The six week program is extremely rewarding and entails working with special needs children and adults between the ages of 5 and 21,” Councilman Imbroto said. “The job is ideal for educators who are off for the summer. It is also a great opportunity for young people seeking to build up their resume.” Councilman Imbroto said applicants will take a leadership role with running the various activities. They must have a Bachelor’s Degree and have completed 1600 hours working with special needs children and adults. Battling Bullying Silence sent a loud message at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District on April 21st, which participated in the National Day of Silence sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network. The purpose of the annual day of action is to spread awareness about the effects of bullying and harassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students. Through their vow of silence, participants symbolically represent the silencing of those individuals as well as anyone who has been bullied, harassed or called names for real or perceived
differences. Those who signed up received a silence card pledging to remain quiet before school, in between classes and after school. At the end of the day, participants broke the silence by gathering outside the auditorium, writing some of the negative words and phrases that have silenced others on a large black piece of paper, then tearing it up to purge the bad words. Many teachers showed a video and held class discussions the day before about the significance of the event. On the Day of Silence, students and staff were encouraged to wear
black. Social worker Marisa Boulukos and psychologist Dr. Tracy Johnson, advisers of Berner’s Gay Straight Alliance chapter, said the goal is to create a climate in which all students feel safe to grow and learn. “By not speaking,” Ms. Boulukos said, “you send a message of support to the students who have been silenced and a message to those who do the silencing that this is not OK at Berner Middle School.” Students at the Massapequa High School’s main and Ames campuses also took part in the Day of Silence.

Jonathon Gonzalez, 13, died after crashing a dirt bike over the weekend. It happened Sunday afternoon near Oakberry Circle and Oak Hamlet Lane in Wellington. The dirt bike crashed into a canal, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue spokesman Albert Borroto. A medical helicopter took the boy to the hospital where he later died. Palm Beach County Schools says the counselors are being made available to both students and staff. The Gonzalez family set up a GoFundMe page (https://www.gofundme.com/our-beloved-jonathon-gonzalez) to help with the funeral expenses. Hundreds of students and friends showed up at a candlelight vigil at the Wellington Edge clubhouse. Mourners marched to the canal where the crash happened.

Young scientists explored mass and density at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students in Megan Protano’s fourth-grade class worked in groups and rotated through different centers to learn about the concepts. At one station, students had to find the mass of
several objects including a nickel, a cork, a rubber stopper, a metal screw and a steel ball. They used balance scales and gram stackers to determine the mass, then recorded their findings. Another center focused on liquid density. Each group received cups of oil, water and syrup and mixed
the three together. They observed the layers that formed to note the density of each. To give the lesson a real world application, Ms. Protano explained that this is why people notice the separation of different liquids in many salad dressings.

Three Billy goats needed saving from an angry troll, and their fate was in the hands of third-graders at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. As part of a STEAM challenge led by magnet teacher Lindsay Cafiero, students had to use only the supplied materials to build a bridge. The project was inspired by the story “The Three Billy Goats
Gruff,” and the children were charged with creating a structure the goats could safely cross. Each group had to follow the engineering process — ask, plan, imagine, create and improve. Students had to collaborate and draw their ideas on worksheets before they could begin building. The provided items included long straws, Popsicle sticks, paper, cardboard tubes of
different sizes and a limited amount of tape. “They always want to jump right in but they have to realize the value of planning,” Ms. Cafiero said. “They have to be able to manipulate the materials to figure out how all the components work together. I don’t want the answer to be so obvious. This is about problemsolving.”

East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District has been participating in the Puzzle Piece Campaign, a fundraising initiative for Autism Speaks, the world’s largest autism science and advocacy organization. The student council has been collecting donations
throughout April, which is Autism Awareness Month. Anyone who made a donation of at least $1 had his or her name written on a paper slip and hung in the lobby or along the main staircase. Each blue and white slip featured an image of a puzzle piece which is the symbol used
to reflect the mystery and complexity of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The school has also designated every Friday of the month as “Light it up Blue” day, in which students and staff were encouraged to wear blue.

LITTLE LEAGUE PARADE - The Massapequa International Little league’s Opening Day Ceremony Parade in Massapequa was recently held, joining coaches, parents and players in celebrating a new season of youth baseball. Among those joining with Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Louis Imbroto were Massapequa Park Mayor Jeffrey Pravato and Massapequa Park Trustee Richard Begandy.

Imbroto recently joined with members of American Legion Massapequa Post 1066 to present the organization’s George Kelleher with a citation for his tireless work ethic on behalf of the community and the organization. admired by his fellow veterans and the community because of his unwavering patriotism and his efforts to advance the causes of those who have served and sacrificed in defense of the United States of America. The American Legion, which cherishes four great principles, justice, freedom, democracy, loyalty, was founded

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that the Town of Oyster Bay, through the Cultural & Performing Arts Division of the Town’s Department of Community & Youth Services, will be conducting a “Battle of the Bands” competition to showcase some of the Town’s young musical talent. Supervisor Saladino, himself a musician and member of an accomplished local band, said that selected bands will be given an incredible opportunity to compete live at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Music Under the Stars Concert Series on Saturday, August 5th, 2017 at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa. “If you’re under 21
years of age and at least one member of your band lives in the Town of Oyster Bay, you are eligible to compete in this exciting contest,” Supervisor Saladino said. “The Town of Oyster Bay’s “Battle of the Bands” provides an awesome opportunity for rising musical stars to experience playing before a large audience and garner exposure for their band.” To be part of the contest, interested bands simply need to record their best original song and a cover song and e-mail it to Sharon Betz of the Town’s Cultural and Performing Arts Division at sbetz@ oysterbay-ny.gov.
