Harbor Cleanup On Saturday, April 30th, the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) and Friends of the Bay will once again join forces to sponsor the annual Oyster Bay Harbor Spring Cleanup Day. Town employees and volunteers have come out for over twenty years to roll up their sleeves and complete a thorough cleanup of the beaches

and shoreline areas along Oyster Bay Harbor. All day people walk along the shoreline collecting debris, picking up trash, and even working from boats to clean up trash and remove discarded boats. This annual Cleanup Day is an inspiration to residents, as it helps preserve the precious ecology of one of the Town’s crown jewels, Oyster Bay Harbor. Volunteers are being

sought to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Volunteers are also welcome to sign up the day of the event. The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps, Larrabee Avenue, Oyster Bay. Each year, countless amounts of paper, food, plastics and other trash are discarded on beaches

or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels. Despite popular belief, debris disintegration of all this trash actually takes weeks, months or even years as opposed to a few days. Last year’s Harbor Clean Up saw over forty thousand pounds of debris collected by volunteers. Allowing this litter to remain on our shorelines will only lead to

increasingly worse damage for the environment. Anyone who swims, boats or fishes in Oyster Bay Harbor, or just wants to help protect and enhance the environmental integrity of this beautiful waterway, is invited to join us on April 30th. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t stay for the entire day; even a couple of hours will make a difference. Cleanup events

like this will go a long way towards preserving the environment for our enjoyment and the enjoyment of future generations. often neglect those things and people we should have paid more attention to along the way. Be thoughtful. Be kind. Be compassionate. Each and every day, to whomever you meet, but mostly to those family and friends who are most important to you. Those are the gestures that will stand the test of time – the gatherings full of laughter and love, the conversations, the greeting cards and gifts, the time spent together. Life is destined to have its fair share of sadness; all we can do is try to minimize the regrets along the way.

Imagine how you would like to be treated, and do your best to emulate that in your interactions with others. It’s the simplest of concepts, really, but its effects are far-reaching. Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn to Skate” this summer by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park. Skating classes for residents are offered at the Ice Skating Center all throughout the year. This summer is a great chance for newcomers interested in learning how to ice skate or for veteran skaters looking to strengthen their abilities. Registration for Series 5 (April 30th through June 26th) is available at the rink, online (www. TheRinx.com) or by phone at 516.797.4126. The “Learn to Skate” program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. The program is eight weeks in length for

the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday classes and seven weeks long for the Monday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday classes. All classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $175. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon, Saturdays from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. and Sundays from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. There will be no classes on Sunday May 1st, the weekend of May 20th-22nd and Monday, May 30th. Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for new members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level.

There will also be an evaluation on week seven with a recommendation for the next series. There will be no refunds or makeups and skate rental is not included in price. Helmets, gloves or mittens and warm layers are recommended for all skaters. The Rinx Skating School staff is made up of experienced and qualified professionals, governed by U.S. Figure Skating, USA Hockey and Professional Skaters Association. These professionals teach skaters the fundamentals of ice skating while also placing a major emphasis on having fun. A team of students from Massapequa High School’s Healthcare Explorers Club won second place in the Northwell Health Spark! Challenge for their creation of a career advertisement for neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nursing, an honor that came with a $1,500 prize. The Spark! Challenge is designed to immerse local high school students in STEM/health careers through coordinated career day events with the hope of igniting their interest in the healthcare field. The Spark! Team from Massapequa visited Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center where they learned about clinical and non-clinical jobs within a pediatric

setting. Students took part in a “mock” trauma scenario in the pediatric emergency room and were given a tour of the hospital where they learned how multiple disciplines work collaboratively to deliver exceptional patient care. The students then chose one career they learned about and created a career advertisement and student presentation that was exhibited at the Spark! Student Showcase at the Cradle of Aviation in April. The team from Massapequa won second place after competing with more than 30 teams from schools all over Long Island. “We are so proud of the achievements of our Health Explorers Club and the valuable opportunities that

club members are afforded through the Northwell Health Spark! Challenge program,” said Denise DeLury, Massapequa High School’s School-to-Career Coordinator and advisor of the Explorer’s Club. The MHS Healthcare Explorers Club gives students an opportunity to explore careers and trends within the healthcare field through trip to hospitals, job shadowing and internship opportunities, and participation in events such as the Spark! Massapequa High School-Ames Campus was clamoring with excitement as 40 alumni returned to the classroom to share a host of advice with freshmen during the 9th Annual Alumni Career Day. Speaking with passion for their chosen fields were alumni in professions ranging from doctors, lawyers, engineers, artists, teachers, and business professionals who graduated between 1966 and 2001. This year’s keynote speaker was Berner High School alumnus and acclaimed pianist, Wade Preston, who is most noted for his part as the Piano Man in the Broadway show Movin’ Out. Preston

spoke of his experiences of standing in for Billy Joel during the months of rehearsals needed for the “Last Play at Shea” concerts and having the honor of performing at the Pennsylvania Inaugural Ball in Washington, D.C. for President Obama and Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell. Preston also spoke about his countryblues band Shotgun Wedding that released a debut album, South of Somewhere, and what it is like to pursue a career as a musician. “The event is an invaluable experience for our students as they have the opportunity to learn firsthand about so many fields that they may

consider pursuing,” said business teacher Christine Poggioli, who coordinates the event with guidance counselor Katherine Balcuk. “Special thanks go out to alumnus Mr. David Riederman, who lines up the alumni for the event and, has made it a huge success year after year, thanks to his ongoing efforts.” The Massapequa Partnership for Career Development, an advisory board set up to help students bridge the gap between school and the workplace, and the Ames Campus also extend their gratitude to all those involved in making Career Day a huge success.

The Fifth Annual Coaches & Alumni vs. Cancer Basketball Game held in Massapequa High School’s gymnasium raised $2,233.00 for the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the varsity boys basketball team, coaches and alumni, the boys booster club, and family and friends of the boys basketball program. and items from Villanova University. “A special thank you to Mrs. Voigt, Mrs. Lynskey, Mrs. Nealis, Mrs. Baierlein and all the parent volunteers and their teams for organizing the tremendously gracious items and baskets,” Voigt said. “Thanks, also, to our ‘voice’ Coach Rath and our guest referees Mr. Chris Wasson and Mr. Bryce Paladino and everyone who kindly donated to this twohour event to help fight cancer. Congratulations go out to all our alumni, varsity players, family members and booster club participants for pulling together a spectacular event.”

District Honor Massapequa School District has been honored with its seventh “Best Communities for Music Education” designation from the NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. The district joins 476 districts across the country in receiving the prestigious award in 2016 and is among 15 districts from Nassau County to earn this honor. The Best Communities Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. Districts that have been recognized by the NAMM Foundation are often held up as models for other educators looking to boost

their own music education programs. To qualify for the Best Communities designation, the district answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. Dr. David Gaines, Massapequa’s curriculum associate for music, K-12, attributes the recognition to the collective support of the staff, administrators, parents and the school board. “There is tremendous support and enthusiasm on all levels to see that our

students have access to an enriching music program and that they receive the support and opportunities they need to be successful student musicians,” Dr. Gaines said. “This honor affirms that our music department, its staff and our programs are at the forefront of music education nationwide.” The seventh recognition rings in some recent milestones and achievements in the district. For the first time, Massapequa High School had two student vocalists, Hannah Bentivegna and Alexia Castle, named AllNational musicians by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). The district also produces one of the highest numbers of All-State musicians in Nassau County.

Art Showcase The Massapequa High School upper gym was a kaleidoscope of color and beauty as 27 students in the Advanced Placement (AP) Studio in Drawing course showcased their work during the AP Art Exhibit. Parents were invited during an evening presentation and teachers, with their classes, viewed the display during the school day. “This exhibit is a culmination of the hard work these students have done throughout the year,” said Art teacher Gale Domingo, who teaches the course. “Students have to

create a 24-piece portfolio that includes 12 pieces that are part of a concentration or deeper level artistic theme and 12 other pieces that shows ‘breadth,’ which portrays their skill and knowledge of art in a medium of their choice. The pieces are put into a portfolio and submitted to the College Board for grading.” Domingo said her AP class has been a “wonderful environment where students collaborate, are motivated and inspired by each other,” noting that more students than ever plan on studying

art and design in college with students accepted to noted schools such as Pratt Institute, Parsons School of Design, School of Visual Arts and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). In addition to the exhibit, AP students recently met with 150 Berner Middle School art students in the Honors by Achievement program to give them some perspective about the high school art program and its AP opportunities, according to Beth Adler, Massapequa’s K-12 Art Chairperson.

Grand Prize Winner

East Lake sixth-grader Jacqueline Paduano always loved to write, and her passion for the art shined through when she was named the Grand Prize of Optimum Community’s inaugural Black History Month Essay Contest. Jacqueline competed against 457 sixth- through eighth-grade students, and as one of the youngest contestants in the category, the win was that much sweeter, according to East Lake Principal Thomas McKillop, III. “Jacqueline is very insightful and her essay showcased that,” he said. The contest challenged students to write a 500 or less word essay on a past or present African American with whom you chose to spend a day and explain why. Jacqueline chose to write about musician Stevie Wonder after she performed a tap routine

to his song, “Signed, Sealed and Delivered.” Her essay, titled, “Music in Braille,” points to how inspirational he is as a blind musician and in a descriptive, conversational style explains to the reader how she would spend a day with the music icon. “He is so very interesting and inspiring because he is blind,” Jacqueline said, “and because he is a great example of a person who has fulfilled his dreams.” As Grand Prize winner, Jacqueline won an iPad and a keyboard, which was presented to her by Optimum host Shawna Ryan at her school before Principal McKillop, Assistant Principal Bryan Piotrowski, Jacqueline’s sixth-grade ELA teacher Kim Cawley and classmates, and her family members, including her mother, Kelly and her siblings, Victor and Ariana,

who, with Jacqueline are triplets. Jacqueline was interviewed by Optimum and will appear on the Neighborhood Journal Show on Optimum TV channel 118 on May 15th at 7 p.m.. She will also be featured on Cablevision’s website at optimumcommunity.net/ eastlake beginning April 22nd. When Cawley learned of the essay contest, she jumped at the chance to enter her students. East Lake submitted 90 essays, more than any other school, according to Optimum representatives. All the students received certificates for their achievement in the contest. “I am immensely proud of all of my students, especially Jacqueline, who writes from her heart and to me that’s what writing is about,” Cawley said.
