On Saturday morning, April 8th, 75 teams of students from 25 Catholic elementary schools across Long Island met at Holy Trinity High School for the Diocesan STEM Fair. So much of life is spent planning, filling in those square boxes on the calendar with appointments and meetings and lunch dates and movie outings. And yet, very little of that time is spent doing things we truly enjoy. Even certain social engagements seem to take on a sense of obligation, of fitting in “fun” simply so that we can check off “reconnecting with old friends” from the neverending to do list. To do, or not to do, that is the question. Sure, there are plenty of things we “have” to do, even if we sometimes lose sight of why. We have been trained, conditioned, to meet the expectations of a society that sees any type of downtime as a bad thing.

If you’re not doing something 24/7, surely you must be shirking some responsibility or another. But what if we simply choose to kick back and relax, to spend our time “doing” nothing – and just leave it at that, no explanation needed. Is that really such a bad thing? When was the last time you slept in, just because? When did you have an entire day with absolutely nothing planned, and no sense of guilt because of it? Leisure does not equal laziness. I recently had lunch with a friend, and this very topic came up, in the context of taking a step back and truly evaluating what it is we want to do – in life as a whole, over the next several

months, weeks, days… even five minutes. How much time is spent planning; yet, of that, very little - if any - is devoted to these questions. We simply forge on, blind to our desires. It’s funny, when you take a moment, the realization kicks in of how few things we do in our daily lives that truly make us happy. Sure, there will always be obligations of one sort or another; but we can frame those with other tasks that are slightly more fulfilling and productive over the long term. The key is figuring out what those are, sooner rather than later. Then you can pencil them in on the calendar.

ACLD Foundation’s second annual Bowling For An Enviable Life FUNdraiser brought people supporting ACLD together, with members of the ACLD family joining ACLD partners and the community for some bowling fun while helping ACLD pursue its mission to provide children and adults with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities with opportunities for pursuing enviable lives, increasing their independence and fostering supportive relationships within the community. “For the second consecutive year, the people ACLD supports and those who help us pursue our mission enjoyed an incredibly special and rewarding afternoon,” said ACLD Executive Director Robert C. The festival leads into Hofstra University’s Dutch festival with food and ﬂower vendors, music and rides for small children. “There are many reasons why Long Islanders should support alternative forms of transportation,

such as biking,” says Car-less Long Island founder and chairwoman, Sylvia Silberger. “Clearly it is much more environmentally friendly and bicycle commuters are able to incorporate a healthier active life-style into their daily routine. But also, it reduces vehicular congestion, benefitting all motorists, and many studies have shown that walk- and bike-ability helps local businesses thrive. There are also many Long Islanders

who need alternative forms of transportation because they are unable to drive or own their own cars and we all benefit if everyone as access to the transportation necessary to survive in this world.” The bike parade is officially listed as a sister march to the Climate March on Washington that day. Car-less Long Island (CLLI) was founded in the summer of 2015 as a project of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island. “It seems I have often found

myself in conversations with other Long Islanders who would like to be able to get around without a car, but are frustrated by the danger and inconvenience inherent alternative modes of transportation,” says Silberger. She founded CLLI to counter the “nihilistic feeling that this is just how Long Island is – we are a car-culture and that will never change.” Silberger is optimistic that the Bike-to-Work Fashion Parade will allow Long Islanders who would like

Long Island to be a more bike-friendly community realize that they are not alone. Participation in the parade is completely free, but participants are encouraged to register in advance at http://www. Forty-seven Massapequa High School students are now skilled in responding to alcoholrelated emergencies after successfully completing the Red Watch Band training program. The initiative was spearheaded by Stony Brook University to curb alcohol-related accidents among high school and college students. Training was sponsored locally by the Massapequa Takes Action Coalition, a schoolcommunity partnership aimed at educating students and parents about the dangers of risky behaviors and promoting activities that empower students to lead safe, healthy lives. Since 2014, more than 300 students

from the high school’s main and Ames campuses have been trained. Participants were required to complete two hours of alcohol emergency training and three hours of CPR training. During the program, students played games such as Jeopardy to reinforce information about alcohol awareness. Many already knew answers from their health classes and the elementary school Too Good for Drugs program. April is Alcohol Awareness Month, and on April 4th a ceremony was held in the Ames library where participants were presented with certificates and red wristbands to remind them that every second counts in an

alcohol-related emergency. A pair of Stony Brook students spoke to students about keeping up their skills by participating in the CARE team, which does outreach at events and also helps get more people trained. Massapequa’s program was coordinated by social workers Kimberly Hession and Joanne Waters. Health teacher Michael LaBella conducted the CPR and AED certification training. “From kindergarten, we talk about decision and prevention,” Ms. Hession said, “but this program is actually intervention and it gives students the skills to step in when things go wrong and possibly save a life.”

second-graders took it to the next level by participating in a digital escape. Instead of having to open locks on boxes, the students worked in small groups and used their Chromebooks to find clues, solve puzzles and riddles,

On March 27th, the Pequott District held its annual District Pinewood Derby and Cub Carnival. The only difference this year was that the event’s leader had passed away a few months before the event. So, this year, some district volunteers came together and ran the event in honor of Mike Assande. Mike had run this derby and carnival for 16 years. When he started the derby was separate from the carnival. A few years into doing the derby, he decided to bring them together into one day. The derby is a race of all of the winners from each pack in the district. The Cubs handmade cars are raced down a track. As far as the carnival, Mike

would arrange for Packs to either bring a game or at least run one. In addition, he acquired all of the prizes for the carnival. The children get to play the games and win really fantastic prizes. Yearly, former Pack 191 Cubmaster and Troop 656 Scout Master, Mike Moriarity, donates a bicycle to be the grand door prize. It’s no small task to put this all together. It took an army of volunteers to run what Mike Assande did yearly for these kids. So, in honor of Mike, the kids had a blast racing their cars and playing the carnival games. If it were not for Mike, his wife, Betsy and sons, Anthony and Patrick, this

event wouldn’t be what it is today. Mike was a valuable part of the Pequott District Committee. He will be sorely missed. This year’s winners: • Best Looking Car - Joe L. Awareness of Autism April is Autism Awareness Month and Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District is doing its part to support the cause. Students were given blank puzzle pieces, which they brought home, decorated with their families and returned to school along with $1.

Money will be donated to the Nassau Suffolk Chapter of the Autism Society of America to support local families. The puzzle pieces, which represent the mystery and complexity of autism spectrum disorder, have been hung throughout the hallways. Second-grade teacher Jennifer Lidonnici,

whose family will match the donations raised by Fairfield students and staff, added that facts about autism have been shared during the morning announcements throughout the month. Members of the Student Council and Art Club made additional puzzle pieces to raise awareness.
