Fifth graders are learning that printing is no longer just about ink on paper, as they explore a third dimension at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. As part of their Makerspace unit in library, students are creating personalized objects using the design program Tinkercad on their Chromebooks. They are working with library media specialists Evangeline King and Jacqueline Lee to learn how to use the software and properly scale the components of their objects. Some students are creating their names attached to a base, while are others are making objects that represent their individual interests. Once all of the objects are designed, they will be made on the 3D printer. While Ms. King

and Ms. Lee provide guidance, students are encouraged to explore the software and ask each other questions to solve problems. “We foster learning

environment in which all help each other,” Ms. King said. “Someone might ﬁgure something out, so now they’re an expert in that and they are going to share with everyone else.”

Some Benefits of Growing Older Many people are quick to think of growing older in a negative light. Although there certainly are some side effects of aging that one may wish to avoid, people may find that the benefits of growing older outweigh the negatives. Seniors are a rapidly growing segment of the population. In the United States, the Administration on Aging states that the older population — persons 65 years or older — numbered 46.2 million in 2014 (the latest year for which data is available). Statistics Canada reports that, in July 2015, estimates indicated that there were more persons aged 65 years and older in Canada than children aged 0 to 14 years for the first time in the country’s history. Nearly one in six Canadians (16.1%) was at least 65 years old. With so many people living longer, it’s time to

celebrate the perks of getting older rather than the drawbacks. Here are some great beneﬁts to growing old. • Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of youth give way as one ages, and older people have less negativity and higher self-esteem. A University of Basel study of people ranging in ages from 18 to 89 found that regardless of demographic and social status, the older one gets the higher self-esteem climbs. Qualities like selfcontrol and altruism can contribute to happiness. • Financial perks: Seniors are entitled to discounts on meals, museum entry fees, movies, and other entertainment if they’re willing to disclose their age. Discounts are available through an array of venues if one speaks up. Seniors also can enjoy travel perks, with slashed prices on resorts, plane

tickets and more. The U.S. National Park Service offers citizens age 62 and older lifetime passes to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites for just $10 in person ($20 online or via mail). • Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brains simultaneously — something called bilateralization. This can sharpen reasoning skills. For example, in a University of Illinois study, older air trafﬁc controllers excelled at their cognitively taxing jobs, despite some losses in shortterm memory and visual spatial processing. Older controllers proved to

be experts at navigating, juggling multiple aircrafts simultaneously and avoiding collisions. • Less stress: As people grow older, they are able to differentiate their needs from wants and focus on

more important goals. This can alleviate worry over things that are beyond one’s control. Seniors may realize how little the opinions of others truly mean in the larger picture, thereby feeling less stress about what others think of

them. Growing older may involve gray hair or wrinkling skin, but there are many positive things associated with aging.

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local water quality issues, through hands-on training, identification and problem solving. Last week I featured some boat cleaning tips that I received from Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and this week I would like

This topic is the common act of releasing balloons into the air. Balloons are a type of marine debris that many people don’t tend to think about. Balloons are frequently accidentally or even intentionally released into the environment and once they go up, they must also come down. A very sad reality is that many times balloons are found in the stomachs of dead marine mammals. Balloons and their ribbons are in the top 5 items of marine debris found on beach cleanups, and Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. volunteers have removed 6,179 balloons from our South Shore Bays and Beaches over the last 4 years. Additionally, the following volunteer positions are currently still available: Boat Crew Members and Boat Maintenance and Repair Members. Together we can continue to better our waterways and shorelines, making them more clean and safe, which will make Long Island an even better place to live!

Baking and Books The Helping Hands Club at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus recently visited the Ronald McDonald House. A dozen students baked cookies, cupcakes, mufﬁns and brownies for the residents and took a tour of this wonderful facility. This was the second time this school year that Helping Hands students visited the facility, which provides a comfortable and

supportive environment for families who have a child undergoing treatment for a serious pediatric illness. The ninth-graders learned about the valuable services that volunteers provide for the families. Helping Hands also recently completed a used book drive to support The Book Fairies organization, which collects reading materials for people in need across metropolitan New

York. Books are distributed to schools and shelters to promote a love of reading, foster literacy success and provide an escape from personal struggles. Ames students and staff donated approximately 1,500 books, and the Helping Hands club sorted the books by age level and genre before they were picked up by The Book Fairies.

Youngest Pizza Makers It was perhaps the tastiest lesson of the school year for kindergartners at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. During the last week of March, students made their own pizzas with the help of a local expect. Dominick Maffei, owner of Leonardo’s Pizza in Massapequa, along with his wife, Linda, visited all three kindergarten classes

for hands-on lessons in pizza-making. He provided the dough, sauce, cheese and several toppings. Mr. Maffei guided children through the process and they could add as much or as little of each ingredient as they wanted. Once the mini pizzas were made, Mr. Maffei brought them to his pizzeria to cook, then returned them to the children for an afternoon

treat. Kindergarten teacher Kim Mollica said that it was the introductory activity for the “How To” writing unit. Each student will select a topic, do research and write a short paper. She and fellow kindergarten teachers Trisha Brackman and Therese Burch wanted children to get a “How To” learning experience before beginning their writing endeavors.

Effects of Snoring Including Alzheimer’s Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know. Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore as women, and snoring can worsen with age. The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring. Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse. While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Over time, apnea can be

associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the Journal of Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12

Rich Degnan, the boys track and ﬁeld coach in the Massapequa School District, was recently honored by the National Scholastic Athletics Foundation. He received the Mike Byrnes Coach of the Year Award. Coach Degnan was recognized at New Balance National Indoor Track and

Field Championship and called the award “a great honor.” He has been the head coach in Massapequa since 2007, and has led teams to conference championships in 2013, 2014 and 2017. The outdoor track team has won the past four division championships

and was county champion runner-up in 2018. During the last 12 years, 69 of his athletes have continued on to track and ﬁeld teams at the collegiate level. Coach Degnan’s teams also have repeatedly been recognized with sportsmanship award. The 1975 Holy Trinity High School graduate was

a five-time All-American athlete, ranking in the top 10 in the United States in five different events. He continued his track and field career at the University of Nebraska, and coached at Bay Shore High School and C.W. Post before coming to Massapequa.

Exercise and Aging: Workout Safely After 50 In an ideal world, people young and old exercise each day. But as men and women age, ﬁnding time to work out is not so easy. Commitments to work and family often take precedence over daily exercise. As a result, many people 50 and over

might not have exercised regularly or at all in many years. But as children grow up or even move out, people facing down their golden years are often compelled to get back in the gym. That’s a wise decision that can increase a person’s chances of being healthy and happy in retirement. But before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women over 50 should take heed of the following safety tips to ensure their efforts are not derailed by accident or injury. • Speak with your physician. The National Institute on Aging notes that even people with chronic

conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis can be physically active. However, anyone with such a condition and even those who don’t fall into those categories should consult with their physicians and receive a full physical before exercising. Such a consultation and checkup can shed light on any unknown issues, and physicians can offer advice on how to safely manage any problems that may arise. • Begin with low-intensity exercises. Even if you feel great and have maintained a healthy weight, don’t push yourself too hard at the start. Your body needs time to adjust to physical activity, so choose lowintensity exercises like walking and light strength training so your muscles, tendons and ligaments can adjust. Initially, exercise every other day so your body has ample time to recover between workouts.

• Choose the right places to exercise outdoors. Exercising outside provides the best of both worlds for many people, providing a chance to get healthy all while enjoying the great outdoors. When exercising outdoors, choose areas that are not remote and where others can see you and offer help if you suffer an injury or have an accident. Boardwalks, public parks and outdoor gyms are safer places to work out than wooded areas or other places well off the beaten path. • Stay hydrated. The NIA

notes that many people lose their sense of thirst as they age. But just because you aren’t thirsty does not mean you don’t need water, especially while exercising. Water regulates body temperature and lubricates the joints, thereby decreasing your risk of

injury during exercise. Exercising after 50 can help people live healthy well into retirement. But caution must be exercised when aging men and women return to exercise after a long break.
