Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. The program is eight weeks in length with the exception of Sunday classes which are prorated for seven weeks. All classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents, the fee is $175. The “Learn To Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays & Thursdays, from 10:00 a.m. to Noon, Saturdays, from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. and Sundays, from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. There will be no class held on Memorial Day, May 25th. Educator turned children’s author Phil Bildner visited East Lake Elementary School to demonstrate how picture books and chapter books are created. Bildner published several picture books pertaining to sports and historical fiction, including “Shoeless Joe and Black Betsy,” “The Shot Heard ‘Round the World,” and “The Unforgettable Season,” and his chapter books, “Sluggers!” have been on “The New York Times” bestsellers list. Using some of his works as examples, Bildner traced

the life of a text from idea to publication, sharing rough drafts, thumbnail sketches, editorial letters, sample layouts, and corrected proofs. He also celebrated the illustrations, focusing on the process and drawing parallels between the work of the author and the illustrator. Throughout his presentation, he incorporated his skills as a teacher in order to make a variety of real worldclassroom connections. Bildner, who grew up in Jericho, experienced careers in teaching and law before becoming a

writer. After earning a political science degree from John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, he continued his education at New York University School of Law and began practicing law at a Manhattan law firm. After one year, he realized he loved teaching and working with kids, so he went back to school and earned a degree in early childhood and elementary education and taught for 11 years before writing full time in 2006.

The Week That Was Let’s try something different for a change. Instead of waiting until the eleventh hour to compose my thoughts for the week, I’ve decided to jot down a bit each day, with hopes that these random ramblings will gel into a somewhat coherent theme. Sounds just abstract enough to work. Monday… The weekly “fresh start” we all seek, yet are often disappointed by about 10 minutes into. For me, the perfect opportunity to catch up on the avalanche of e-mails that have surely accumulated over the weekend, while methodically trying to plan the remainder of the week’s activities. A quick scan of social media says everyone is still buzzing about last night’s

highly anticipated season premiere of Game of Thrones. Me, I’m still working my way through the series of five larger-than-life books. Tuesday… Into the fray again, trying to keep pace with the workﬂow in preparation for my day off on Friday, yet another reason to get a jump on that column. Nothing but rain and clouds outside, which makes for a decidedly dreary disposition. But, I suppose such an atmosphere is far more conducive to accomplishing tasks on the endless To Do list. Better not to be tempted by the sun’s rays, beckoning you to take an extended lunch. Wednesday… Yet another lovely day in the neighborhood, or so I brieﬂy glimpsed on my way into the office. Word is it’s 66º and sunny. One of these days, this

kind of weather will coincide with a weekend. Maybe. But alas, here I sit at my keyboard, typing away at the local community news and events. Summer fun in the sun can’t come soon enough. Thursday… The eleventh hour. One day short of a deadline; for me, tomorrow will be spent helping to run the Society of Professional Journalists’ Annual Region I Conference, this year hosted by Hofstra University and sponsored by our very own Press Club of Long Island. A full schedule of panels and lectures by some of the region’s finest journalists is on tap, a muchneeded reminder of why it was I became involved in this field to begin with. And so, I’m off. Stay tuned for a full recap of the conference next week!

the WaterFront Center of Oyster Bay. During a visit to the school, a representative from the center presented the “Touch Tank” program, which teaches students about marine life while being introduced to a variety of marine organisms typically found

Keynote speaker Barbara Porter, an NYIT alumna and chief technology officer at FragranceNet. com, encouraged students to take advantage of the many opportunities available in the fields of engineering and computer science. Hands-on interactive demonstrations led by NYIT’s engineering students had attendees ﬂying drones, operating Nao humanoid robots, coding, and making ice smoothies via a humanoperated bike blender. Massapequa High School senior Shannon D’Andrea said, “It was very inspiring to hear how Ms. Porter started her career in computer science and how she rose to her current

position.” Classmate Christina DeLuca said she was “thrilled” to meet with members of the NYIT VEX robotics team and discuss ideas that she could bring back to her VEX robotics team at Massapequa High School. Freshman students from the Massapequa High School-Ames Campus were equally enthralled with the event. “This experience really opened my eyes to just how much there is to the world of engineering and it really helped me consider doing something in this field,” Krystal Wheaton said. “I got a clearer picture of what my future could be,” said classmate Ella Schnee. Marveled by the bike blender demonstration, she added, “I’m going to build that bicycle at home.”

On April 13th, Mary Magnani celebrated her 100th birthday at Captain Bill’s Restaurant in Bay Shore. She was honored along with 200 fellow volunteers at Good Samaritan Hospital’s Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. Special recognitions were given by United States Senator Charles Schumer, New York State Senator Phil Boyle and Town of Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteran. Mary is a Charter Member of the Good Samaritan Hospital’s Copiague/ Massapequa Guild. She began volunteering in the hospital’s Coffee Shop in 1959, when Good Sam ENGINEERING CONFERENCE - Massapequa High School students engage in opened its doors. She later hands-on engineering demonstrations at NYIT’s ‘Introduce a Girl to Engineering’ devoted many hours in the event.

longevity to her strong family ties and religious faith. Although she never married, she enjoyed a large circle of friends and family and an adventurous life. She enjoyed traveling, visiting Italy, Mexico, Newfoundland and various locations across the United States. She happily enjoys socializing with her church friends. She also spends a lot of time with her more than 40 nieces and nephews. “My heart beats with warmth when I see my nieces and nephews and their children,” said Mary. “Their many accomplishments are an extension of my life and are what keeps me going.

This annual Cleanup Day is an inspiration to residents, to help preserve the precious ecology of one of the Town’s crown jewels, Oyster Bay Harbor. Volunteers are being sought to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Individuals and groups who are interested can get further information by calling the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources at 516.677.5853.
