cause some perceived slight…what? Chances are, it’s something else entirely. (Read: Everything is not always about you!) The thing is, when you’re in a foul frame of mind, it’s difficult to see beyond the black cloud. Best everyone stay out of your way until the storm has passed, as you can’t be held accountable for your tone, whether impatient, annoyed, indifferent… in short, anything but friendly. Negativity breeds more negativity, and those who dare to cross paths with those in such a state are just asking for trouble. And so the cycle continues. Day after day of trying to dodge the slings and arrows of those who

would bring you down to their level, if you let them. It’s an effort, to be sure, to block out and continue on your merry way. But what other choice do we have? There comes a point when you need to avoid being sucked into the cycle. I often envy those who seem to exude nothing but positive vibes, who appear to be in a constant state of contentment. Is it genuine? How do they achieve such a mentality and, better yet, maintain it continuously? I suppose, even if it is merely a means of keeping up appearances, such a skill should be applauded. Fake it ‘til you make it, as they say. Perhaps they should hold a class on that.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR - McKenna Elementary held its annual PTA sponsored Scholastic Book Fair from March 19th-20th. This year’s theme was Under The Sea. Additionally, many families donated generously to Scholastic’s “One For Books” program. Under this program, Scholastic Books will donate ONE BOOK for every dollar donated. The one for one book donation was a huge success and the school was able to donate four books to each classroom and many books to the school library as well. In one of the most exhilarating exhibits of heart and determination, more than 600 spectators filled the stands at Alfred G. Berner Middle School to cheer on Massapequa’s Challenger Basketball Team, made up of special needs students in grades 7-12, as they competed against Seaford in their biggest game of the season. A culminating event of Spirit Week at Berner, the game epitomizes how students with special needs can participate in mainstream sports, despite their disabilities, and develop skills such as teamwork, cooperation, focus and grace. “The event gives students a venue where they can be like everyone else and enjoy a sport like everyone else, and provides a level of acceptance and

support from the school community, which is incredibly important to the athletes and their families,” said Coach Kerry Regan, who coordinates the event. “There’s a wide range of skills and needs on the team. To see how far they’ve come is amazing.” The game, combined with those from the winter sports teams, raised more than $2200 for Autism Speaks, which hosted its worldwide “Light It Up Blue,” campaign on April 1st and 2nd. Berner Buddies Club also presented Seaford with blue wristbands in honor of the campaign. In a gym filled with posters, balloons and streamers to mark the event, energy was high as the fans cheered for the teams. Spectators participated in various

contests and were given Chiefs gear as an award. The Vocal Points, a Berner vocal club, lent their voices for the National Anthem and the Berner Cheerleaders performed to get the crowd pumping. Following the Berner Cheerleaders’ lead, the team showed some skills beyond basketball by participating in a flash mob at half-time to Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk,” along with staff, administrators and the Berner Buddies Club, a social club for students with special needs. “Many thanks to everyone who made this event a great success,” Regan said. “The team members felt the energy and support of the crowd, and that is truly the fuel that helps them in more ways than I can describe.”

One team addressed changing school start times and testing procedures, supported by international research that a later start time of just one hour would increase alertness and test scores as well as decrease the number of traffic accidents in the early morning. The second team focused on apps and wearables that can monitor your sleep, breathing, and heart rate to alert the wearer of increased stress levels. In addition to presenting their work, students attended lectures by medical doctors and psychiatrists on the current issues in mental health awareness. They shared statistics on common issues with numbers as high as 1 in 10 students facing a situation in their scholastic career that could benefit from a

mental health professional. To that end, students were taught ways of coping with stress through apps, focusing exercises, and breathing techniques. “Our students left the competition with a feeling of accomplishment,” said Ames Campus science research teacher Gregg Hession who served as a mentor for this project along with science research teachers August Eberling and Nicole Gonzalez. “The pride in their work showed in their enthusiastic discussion. Although they did not win, students eagerly took pictures with teachers and teammates on stage to commemorate the day.” Ames Campus social worker Kim Hession also worked with the teams to increase their awareness of mental health issues concerning teens today and helped the students develop their ideas to change mental health policies.
