Seeking Volunteers The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is seeking volunteers to participate in an online survey about their experiences in a breast cancer support group. “The purpose of this study is to better understand the long-term benefits as identified by participants in breast cancer support groups,” says Erin Nau, LCSW, who is conducting the survey with the Breast Cancer Program’s director Hillary

Rutter, LCSW. The survey will identify common reasons for attending a support group, their identified benefits, overall experiences and the long-term impact on their survivorship. “Identifying these factors will allow breast cancer agencies to plan and facilitate more sustainable support groups,” says Rutter. Spring has sprung, so why haven’t I? The earth is revitalized. Everywhere I look, there are buds bursting to show off their finery. Where is my photosynthesis? If I get too much sun, I get more wrinkles, burnt skin, cancer. No raking or thatching will help me...oh no! The gardeners come and look about. Oh yes my dear, you need some chemicals to kill the weeds, and seeds to fill in the bald spots of grass. Great idea, here comes the retin A, the alphahydroxyl and this and that. The wrinkles keep coming. The hair gets thinner and grows in all the wrong places. And the garden looks great! The trees grow tall and need a trimming. I grow short, I’m never winning. The colors are glorious, the reds, the purples, the whites and yellows. My colors all come out of a jar, a brush, a pencil. IT JUST ISN’T FAIR!

Eerie - the only word to describe that morning. The morning sun was slowly inching toward the gray sky, revealing a light fog. The mist seemed to grow thicker as the sun crept through its tendrils. Glancing up and down the block, I crossed the street to wait for my bus to come and whisk me off to the hellhole known as high school. The screen of my phone illuminated the vapor that twirled around me, coiling itself around me like a snake squashing its prey. A twig snapped on the lawn behind me, causing me to spin around, getting whipped by my own cherry hair. Squinting my eyes, I scanned the dying lawn, but saw nothing. Unable to shake the thought of someone standing in the darkness, watching me, I stepped further into the protection of the towering street lamp. The dusty yellow glow swallowed me willingly as I wrapped my arms protectively around myself. Antsy, I leaned forward, allowing myself to see past all the parked cars to see the yellow lights of the bus working its way toward me. A sense of relief flooded me. Dropping my guard, a loud banging noise sounded behind me, causing me

to jump, stirring up the fog around my sneakers. Glancing over my shoulder, I noticed a white gate swinging in the wind, crashing into its post. The squeaking of tires drew my attention back to the street. In front of me stood the school bus with its doors wide open, welcoming me with a blast of heat. I slid into the seat high above the back wheel, before glancing once more at the lawn to see if anyone was there. A dark figure moved closer to the sidewalk. The eyelids of the being opened, revealing glowing yellow eyes that latched onto mine the second they were scanning the world around them. A faint memory of piercing gold eyes studying me ran through my head at the speed of light so I could not even visualize what the owner of the one-of-a-kind orbs was. The bus began to roll away, but my eyes were glued to the golden ones hidden in the fog. When we rounded the corner, my contact was broken without my consent. The memory began to play again as I leaned back into my seat. A square jaw. Smooth almond skin. Sun-kissed hair. I knew those eyes. It was –

CAPTAIN’S MEETING - Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joseph D. Muscarella met with the Town of Oyster Bay Blood Drive Captains and Chairpersons to discuss logistics and outreach for the upcoming blood drive to be held at Town facilities on Thursday, April 14th. Councilman Muscarella commended the Blood Drive Captains and Chairpersons for their valuable assistance organizing the blood drive, giving back to the community and saving lives. Strong Showing at State Back in early March, the Massapequa High School DECA Club attended the state competition. DECA, which stands for Distributive Education Clubs of America, is an international association of high school students and teachers who have taken interest in or chosen to pursue careers in a wide array of business fields. Led by advisors Edward Aromando and Charles Everitt, the students began their journey to the competition back in September when the club started meeting on Mondays after school. On Tuesday, March 8th, fourteen students boarded a bus for an eighthour ride up to Rochester for the state competition in which they competed, in their respective categories against students from all over New York. Seniors Miranda McLeer, Jennie Toutoulis and Jackie Angelo competed in the sports and entertainment marketing category and, though they didn’t make it on to nationals in Nashville, still came in 7th place - quite the accomplishment considering it was a rather large category that consisted of over 20 other groups. Sophomore Justin Buckenberger ended up coming in 5th place, one spot away from making nationals, but he will still be going to Nashville to attend the DECA leadership conference, a conference in which students sharpen their business skills.

For a third straight year, Massapequa dominated the International Business plan category as a group of seniors, Mark Fedoronko, A.J. Mastrobuoni and John Merz, came in 1st place in the category. Their project consisted of expanding a nutritional supplement product overseas to Finland. They had to write a 30-page paper and do a presentation to a panel of judges at the state competition. Buckenberger, Fedoronko, Mastrobuoni

and Merz will all be moving on to Nashville. Also going with them will be Justin McGowan, Kris Kaczorowski and Lincoln Clark. These three students received a direct entry to Nationals, as they wrote a 50 page paper about the Massapequa High School School Store, commonly referred to as the Trading Post. With

the help of the advisors and business teachers, Mrs. Denise Delury and Mrs. Marianne Conte, the three were able to put together a sale of Massapequa High School coffee mugs with assorted candy and sell them around Christmas time. These sales made money for the club and at the same time helped them write their paper. “The fact that seven students are attending the National competition this year shows how much hard work and dedication the students have put in and how much progress the club has made this year,” said one of the club’s advisors, Mr. Edward Aromando. The International Career Development Conference, commonly referred to as “Nashionals” by the students, (a play on words due to the fact that it will be held in Nashville TN), will take place from Saturday, April 23rd through Tuesday, April 26th. For Mark Fedoronko and Justin McGowan, it will be their third consecutive year competing in the National Competition. For the other five, it will be their first year. Students will leave for Nashville on Friday, April 22nd. In Nashville, the students will be competing against 18,000 other students from across the country, as well as Mexico, Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands, Canada and China. With this being the first time at Nationals for five out of the seven students, they are definitely looking forward to it.
