with Jamie Lynn Ryan By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time for Buddy: The Sequel. As some of my more loyal readers may recall, I recently adopted my very own Betta fish, Buddy. He’s currently one and a half months old in time-spent-in-myfishbowl years, which has already surpassed the lifespan of most of my previous goldfish, surely a good sign. Like most fishy friends, it seems Buddy’s main mission is to eat. Constantly. Every time he catches a glimpse of me, here he comes, face pressed up against the glass, flippers “wagging”
expectantly. And then there’s the chewing. The adorable motion he makes when consuming his special Betta flakes is nothing short of precious. Who knew fish had teeth! Aside from his daily meal, Buddy seems content to swim endless laps around his prized plant decoration, occasionally knocking it from the gravel in his mad exuberance. Once exhausted, he generally settles under one of the branches for a little floating shut-eye – with eyes wide open of course. That usually only lasts until the instant he spies me, as even the slightest
prospect of food ends any siesta. Sure, he may not be as entertaining as a puppy or kitten or some other furry critter, but Buddy provides his own unique level of amusement from beyond the bowl. I think he’s adjusted quite well to life as a member of my household. Of course, that may be said for anyone who feeds him but… I still say Buddy and I have developed a special bond. Here’s hoping for many more milestones celebrated with my new fishy friend – and many more meals consumed together!

The education initiative was announced on March 24th in connection with “Ken Burns Presents Cancer: The EMPEROR of All Maladies,” a film by Barak Goodman which will air on PBS as a three-part series on Monday, March 30, Tuesday, March 31st and Wednesday, April 1st. “The need to increase cancer research to discover cures for many forms of cancer remains a top priority nationally, and this program will provide a pipeline to mentor a new generation of budding cancer researchers,” said Yusuf Hannun, MD, Director of the Stony Brook University Cancer Center, Vice Dean for Cancer Medicine, and the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine. “We are thrilled to be the first Cancer Center to support this educational initiative and believe our research faculty will be ideal mentors for the selected students.”
Upcoming Blood Drives he American Red Cross encourages eligible blood donors to make a difference in the lives of patients this spring by giving blood. Donated blood is perishable and must be constantly replenished to keep up with the demand. Red blood cells, with a shelf life of only 42 days, are the most frequently transfused blood component, and are always needed by hospitals. Eligible donors can give red cells through either a regular whole blood donation or a double red cell donation, where available. Double red cell donations yield twice the usual amount of red cells in a single appointment and are accepted at select donation locations. Double red cell donors must meet additional eligibility criteria, which will be determined at the donation appointment. Donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with types
O negative, A negative and B negative. Whole blood can be donated every 56 days, and double red cells may be donated every 112 days, up to three times per year. SPELLING BEE CHAMPIONS - Grace Day School’s student, Reuben Philip, won first place in the 2015 Long Island Fellowship of Christian School’s Spelling Bee. Massapequa Boy Scouts Troop 660 and Cub Scouts Pack 696 joined together to help plant dune grass at Tobay Beach this weekend. In spite of the snow, sleet, rain and freezing temperatures, the scouts made a tremendous effort to rebuild the natural barrier that the dune grass provides. They worked for several hours and then enjoyed

The Dune Grass project helps to maintain the dunes which provide a natural barrier against storm surges and high

winds during severe weather. Without dunes, waterfront property is at greater risk. Wildlife, such as shore birds, can lose critical habitat, and the coastline itself can be altered. whatever day they want, as many days a week as they want,” said Lori Salmon, manager of ELIH’s Silver Sneakers program. “All it takes is coming to the gym a few days a week to see your function levels increase.” Andrea Esposito, owner of NOFO Wellness Center in Cutchogue, has offered the program for more than three years. There’s been a recent up tick in beneficiaries interested in the program and she now has 35 members taking advantage, she said, most likely because insurance companies have been notifying plan subscribers about the program. “I’m glad that people are finally realizing that it is better to keep themselves healthy, because it is so much harder to cure an illness or fix something once it is diagnosed,” Ms. Esposito said. “The hardest part is getting there. Once they are here, we can motivate them.” Lee Dugan, an instructor with Maximus Health and Fitness in Riverhead, has been teaching classes for the older generation for almost a decade, helping people as young as 65, and as old as 90, remain young. Participants at the Riverhead gym have the opportunity to take classes designed with a senior’s well-being in mind, using
seated exercises and body resistance that can be adapted for all skill levels. Sitting in her class on a snowy Thursday afternoon, 85 year-old Mel Rosenberg of Riverhead could be seen lifting weights with confidence. “I started right after I had a stroke, about seven years ago,” Mr. Rosenberg said. “Now, you have no idea how much I look forward to coming here. When I wake up in the morning I don’t often feel like doing much of anything, but after coming here I feel like I could do it all.” “A lot of the exercises we do are basic functions that can help them to weather the storm,” Ms. Esposito said. “They also enjoy the companionship from other members, making it a social experience as well. We also have many couples joining together, as a team.” Nicole Mohr, a trainer with ELIH, said that some members had never done any of the exercises before, but added that “it is never too late to start.” “We will work with them, and get them feeling confident,” Ms. Mohr said. “Just like life, we take it one step at a time.” For more information about the program visit silversneakers.com.
