555 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan 555 columns, 556 with this one. Ten years, soon to be eleven. Such are the minimilestones of my journalistic career here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Throw in a dozen or so “In Season” columns from our South Bay’s Seasons™ Magazine, and you have quite the collection of musings on life from me (with the occasional contribution from Buddy the Betta) over the last decade or so of my life. Impressive? Sure, if you enjoy what I have to say. Voluminous? Without a doubt. I have often considered the prospect of sifting through these past essays and compiling some sort of anthology – the highlights, the

lowlights, a snapshot of those topics that seemed worthy of putting pen to paper, or finger to keyboard, as the case may be. Quite the undertaking, and perhaps only for my own self-satisfaction, but a worthy effort nonetheless. Maybe throw in a few photographs to accent the project… weave in a bit of narrative to segue from one chapter to the next… Upon brieﬂy scanning through some of the titles, I see a selection of heartfelt profiles of friends and family members who have left an imprint on my life, a few humorous “rants about nothing” on those dayto-day occurrences that seem to plague us all, a fair share of seasonal and holidaythemed edit, a handful of monumentally exciting

events (I got to interview Don Mattingly??) and… well, a host of columns that can only be categorized as “other,” those musings that delve into the philosophical, my own analysis of life as we know it. A bit uneven? Surely. Representative of my frame of mind at any given moment during the course of the last 10-going-on-11 years? Absolutely. And isn’t that what it’s all about? The opportunity to capture a moment in time, by any means, and transmit it to the public, through any medium, is a priceless one. How lucky I am to have had the chance to do so. 555 times. These characteristics also serve in his role as a coach of Cross-Country, Track and Field, and JV Girls Basketball. Also known for his skills in educational technology

Mr. Herr was one of the first to adopt a staff Twitter handle in the building and his use of new technology continues to inspire faculty and attract students. “Mr. Herr reaches beyond expectations and becomes involved with programs that support the entire community, including co-facilitating an Active Parenting

group,” his nominator wrote. “His even-toned nature is notorious. He is a superior role model for students and staff, and evidence that nice guys do indeed finish first.” A 1999 graduate of Massapequa Schools, Michael Draper returned to the district in 2005 as a health educator after attending SUNY Cortland, and has displayed “a never-ending

willingness to volunteer his time to improve the community in which he grew up,” his nominator wrote. As the advisor for the Key Club, he spearheaded a program called “Stuff a Bus” in 2012, which encouraged the community to fill a school bus with donated nonperishable food and toys for families whose homes were devastated by Super Storm Sandy.

This year, he also volunteered to dress up as Santa Claus for the Head Start program, bringing a toy and a smile to underprivileged children in the neighboring town of Amityville. His other contributions include GSA volunteer advisor, Senior Nation peer mentoring program advisor and coordinating

Spring Computer Classes Town of Oyster Bay seniors are invited to take part in computer classes that will be held this April at the William P. Bennett Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 West Carl Street in Hicksville. Assemblyman Joseph Saladino, along with Optimum Community, recently presented a donation check to Massapequa High School for its “Catch A Wave” charity event. The event is part of the seventh annual Optimum

Charity Champions contest, which promotes volunteerism and helps students raise money for a charity of their choice. Massapequa High School students held the “Catch A Wave” event to raise money for the Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop

University Hospital. The students decorated hallways, calling them “The Boardwalk,” where baked goods, t-shirts, hats and other items were sold to raise money while music played and a fun time was had. The event raised more than $6,000 last year.

each teacher’s page was feedback offered during the class that Principal Esposito was happy to consider. While not every teacher has a Haiku page, teacher usage is high and is increasing. “When we are in sync, we have a better chance of moving forward more consistently and efficiently,” Esposito said. “As we explore this new technology we want to hear your concerns and suggestions so that we can streamline it and make it as easy as possible to use. Parents are our most important partners; we are in this

together.” A new feature to Haiku this year is the parent login. This helps if parents have more than one student in school. They can view all their students in one portal this way, rather than logging into each student’s individual account. Parents can set up a login by clicking on the “parents” tab on the district website for more information. Using Google Apps for Education, which are also web-based and can be accessed anytime, anywhere from any mobile device, parents learned how to create a document using Google Docs and were informed about why it is such an important tool in education today. With Google Docs, students can collaborate on assignments and projects in school or at home because the work is automatically saved in the cloud. Students share work with teachers who can give immediate feedback and individualized attention, which puts students on a better path to success. “A lot of the work begins in the classroom and continues at home,” Esposito said. “The ability to collaborate in this way is very powerful. We don’t know what the career of the future will be, but we know they will be using collaboration as a 21st century skill.” Parents agreed that they felt more comfortable with the technology and would find other workshops on topics such as Mobile Apps, helpful in the future. Subsequent workshops on the Parent Portal and the online Gradebook were held at the end of March. More workshops are being planned as needed.

Berner Middle School parents headed back to the classroom for Parent Tech University to learn how to navigate the digital tools teachers and students use to enhance academic instruction. The class centered on the district’s learning management system called Haiku and Google Apps for Education. It was the first of a series that aims to boost parents’ comfort levels so they can be actively involved in their children’s education. “For students to get the most out of their education, it is important for them to be powerful users of the digital tools that are available to them and that our parents are involved and have a good understanding of how to navigate these tools as well so we can all work together toward success,” said Berner Middle School Principal Jason Esposito upon welcoming parents to the class. Technology Learning Coach Danielle Mammolito conducted a day and evening session where dozens of parents first learned about the different ways they can get information from the district, including visiting the website, signing up for Enews, which can be done on the website, using mobile Apps such as “Remind” @ bernerinfo and through Twitter @BernerChiefs and @MassapequaPS or clicking on the Twitter feed on the Berner webpage. Then, using a Smartboard, she instructed them on Haiku, and Google Apps for Education.
