Five members of the Massapequa School District community were honored at the SCOPE Education Services awards dinner on March 20th including a teacher, a former administrator, support staff and a community member. Megan Pavlick, a fifthgrade special education teacher at Fairfield Elementary School, received a Teacher Service Award. She has worked in the district for nearly 10 years and was recognized as a child-centered educator who possesses creativity and enthusiasm for her work. Former Massapequa High School Principal Dr. Barbara Williams, who retired in June 2016, earned an Administrator Service Award. She was cited as a visionary leader

Less than one week into the new season, and I came down with a cold. Not just any cold, mind you – the epitome of chest colds, complete with congestion, sinus pressure and one of those irritating, incessant sort of tickles in the back of the throat that seem to kick into high gear right around bedtime. All winter, and not a sniffle. That, I believe, is what they call irony. So, too, is the fact that those who have been looking forward to spring with such anticipation are already bemoaning the pouring rain we’ve been experiencing over the last week or so. April showers
bring May flowers, do they not? At least that’s how the old saying goes. Of course, some flowers have already blossomed thanks to the unseasonably warm temperatures scattered throughout March and, as such, have gone back to hibernating for the duration. More irony, indeed. No worries, there are certainly plenty of flowers to be had over the next several months, along with green grass and flourishing trees and… pollen and sap and weeds and mold spores… There’s nothing like the great outdoors. Just be sure to stock up on tissues and allergy pills before you venture out. And maybe an umbrella,
for good measure. Spring is a perfect representation of life as a whole. It’s filled with much anticipation of better days, often precluded by clouds and unseasonable changes in temperature, or moods, if you will. And still, there are those who would just as soon skip right over it into summer, assuming that sunshine and surf and sand equal happiness; when really, the unknown is never guaranteed to be better than the present. And that, dear readers, is the essence of it all. Appreciate today and all the sniffles and sunbursts it may bring; stop and pick a flower, splash in a puddle, enjoy the moment. It’s the only one you’ve got.

Kathleen Daly and Judy Comerchero received excellence awards for support staff. Ms. Daly, who has worked in Massapequa as a secretary since 1999, supports the district’s technology, human resources and assessment management offices. She was described as “an irreplaceable member” the central office team. Ms. Comerchero has been the secretary to the assistant to the superintendent for human resources since 2003, and was recognized for her positive and helpful
attitude, as well as her skilled and efficient work. Joe Davis received a Community Service Award. The Jeopardy-style competition highlighted knowledge of marine science while requiring game strategy and teamwork. This year’s theme was ocean energy. Massapequa’s Bay Scallop Bowl team, which participated for the sixth straight year, was led by captain Sarah Whelan, who is planning to pursue oceanic and environmental studies in college. The team also consisted of juniors Hunter D’Amore and Michael Cafiero, and seniors James Christian and Nick Bianco. They were coached by teacher Gregory Kwas and science curriculum associate Lisa Caputo. “This was a well-fought battle and the fourth-place finish is a new historic high for Massapequa High School,” said Mr. Kwas “We are very proud of our marine science whiz kids.”

History Comes Alive

The power of the ocean’s flow is felt on the incoming tide. A building of momentum, a surge, explosions, fire crashing on rocks. Life is like that. A surging battle uphill; attainment; engulfment; then a period of peace begins. The energy of the high water flow can bring nutriments, or bring destruction, but it always brings change.
History came alive for secondary students from the Massapequa School District, who recently participated in National History Day at Hofstra University. This year’s theme was “Taking a Stand in History,” and two students earned awards for their projects. Students from Berner Middle School and Massapequa High School’s Ames and main campuses created projects using an individual or a historical event as the focal point. Categories included documentary, website, historical paper and exhibit. Participants were able to choose a historical topic and presentation format
that interested them. Some historical figures they selected were Nelson Mandela, Muhammed Ali, Clara Barton, Jackie Robinson and Queen Liliokalani, among others. Berner eighth-graders completed projects for their social studies classes that aligned with the National History Day requirements. This ensured that they were able to develop research and presentation skills while learning how to create annotated bibliographies. The best projects were selected for the regional competition. Students at Ames were able to compete in the event by completing a project through the History
Club, and participants from the high school worked on projects with Social Studies Curriculum Associate Brian Trapani. Berner Middle School student Adriana Kamor received the Genocide, Bias or Tolerance in History Award sponsored by the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County for her documentary on Dietrich Bonhoeffer, “Holocaust Hero Heeds Call for Help.” Massapequa High School student Kyle Fiene earned the Maritime History Award sponsored by the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum for his exhibit, “The Battle of Dunkirk: Great Britain Takes a Stand.”

FLAG FOOTBALL KICKOFF - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph S. Saladino (center) was on hand to help kick-off the Long Island TOB Flag Football Youth League’s season at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Field of Dreams in Massapequa. The league, which is co-sponsored by the National Football League, features non-contact flag football competition for boys & girls ages 5-17 years old and is held at fields throughout the Town. The league has been a huge success, with hundreds of players enjoying the competitive fun. Supervisor Saladino greeted the league’s players, officials, coaches and parents and wished all the participants well for the upcoming season.

The story of the boy who doesn’t want to grow up came to Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, which hosted three sold-out performances of “Peter Pan Junior” on March 24th and 25th. The show, directed by
music teacher Kathleen Dyckman, featured a cast of 115 fourth- through sixthgraders. Cooper Aribisi starred in the title role. Timothy Rogers played Captain Hook, Delana Martinez was Tinkerbell and Vicky Samaras portrayed Wendy. Several Lockhart

graduates came back to help with the show including Massapequa High School Ames Campus ninth-graders Max Foley as assistant director and Juliette Liebov as stage manager. Art teacher Patti Krakoff designed the sets.
Forty-four students in the Massapequa School District’s World Language program participated in Sprachfest 2017 on March 18th, with several earning medals in various competitions. The annual event, coordinated by the American Association of Teachers of German, brings together students from all over Long Island for a day of games and events involving German language and culture. Participants included
students from Berner Middle School and Massapequa High School’s main and Ames campuses. Events included spelling, vocabulary, number and geography bees; music and vocal performances; baking and gingerbread house competitions; and a video contest. Gold award winners included Ryan Cassano in the baking contest (bundt cake) and number bee, and Margaret Smith in vocal performance. Other

students earning silver or bronze medals included Isabelle Alves, Nicole Dahlquist, John Gonzalez, Christopher Hadsall, Alexandra Kanapes, Andrew O’Brien, Angelica Radomski, Natasha Saar, Luke Scher, Daniel Wahl, Evan Warns, Joseph Whalen, Christian Williams and Joseph Yahner. A Taste of the World Disney theme with games that allowed elementary students to learn some basic signs. Crafts from various French-speaking areas such as Paris, Belgium, Madagascar and New Orleans gave children a hands-on experience. They could make Guatemalan worry dolls and play popular board games in Spanish. “It’s a really good way for children to experience different cultures, have fun and learn new things such as words in different languages,” said senior Alexandra Kanapes, a German language student. “Planning our activities was a group effort and it was really good to teach the language that we love to learn.” National Art Honor Society students had a facepainting booth to paint the flags of other countries. In the gymnasium, there were cultural performances including Chinese Lion and Kung-Fu Fan dances. Guests were able to enjoy
dinner and dessert at an international food court in the cafeteria. Bill Anderson, the curriculum associate of World Languages and ENL, said the purpose of the event was to introduce the elementary students to the program and get them thinking about what language they would want to learn in middle school and beyond. He added that turnout was very high this year because of the introduction of the FLES program in third grade, which provides weekly Spanish instruction. The event was also promoted extensively as Berner Middle School students made posters that were hung throughout the elementary schools. “The children were engaged and had a great time at our World Language Festival,” Mr. Anderson said. “I think they learned the importance of studying another language and exploring other cultures.”

Elementary students got an insight into the Massapequa School District’s extensive World Language program during an evening of food, fun and entertainment at Massapequa High School on March 22nd. The 13th annual World Language Festival featured activities centered on the six languages offered in the district. First-floor classrooms were transformed to take students on an international journey, and they got their passports stamped at each stop. Activities were organized and led by high school World Language students and each room had its own theme. Children made crafts to celebrate the holiday traditions of Italy, decorated gingerbread cookies and colored paper crowns in the German fairy tale room and learned how to use Chinese yo-yos and chopsticks.
