Second Half School Taxes Due Oyster Bay Town residents are reminded that the Second Half of the 2017-2018 School Tax Levy is due on April 1st, but can be paid without penalty through May 10th. Please be certain to sign your check, payable to James J. Stefanich, Receiver of Taxes. Indicate your property’s S.D. Code, Section, Block, Lot and telephone number on the check.
“By law, a taxpayer has a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” Mr. Stefanich explained. “After the 40 days, a one percent penalty is added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to April 1st.” Residents can pay in person, by either cash or check, at the Tax Office, Oyster Bay Town Hall

struggles, it is how we choose to deal with, and hopefully, to overcome these issues that is the most important. Redirecting our focus constantly, from wallowing in the negativity of why did this happen? to being proactive in setting a plan for what would I like to happen? going forward. No use dwelling on the past; we need to be present in order to look to the future with anything resembling a clear perspective. They say hindsight is 20/20; but is it truly? I would argue that, even upon reflecting on past events, I do not have an unequivocal assessment of how things might have turned out differently; or even, if they should have. No, I am a firm believer that all things happen for a reason, even if that reason is not immediately - or ever - apparent. Some things are simply not meant to be
understood beyond a shadow of a doubt. Life is nothing if not filled with unexpected twists and turns, and a touch of the unknown. I recently came across a quote which said, in part, that it is not truly the unknown which we fear; but rather, what we think we know of the unknown. What an interesting concept, this notion that most of our apprehensions are selfmade and, if we would only take care to take a step back and let things play out a bit, perhaps we would be pleasantly surprised as to the outcome. Spring is traditionally seen as a time of growth and progress, naturally and otherwise. The seeds must be planted and cultivated, in hopes of a fruitful season. Whether things blossom as we wish, well, that remains to be seen. As with most things, only time will tell.

And just like that, spring has arrived, with its bursts of warm sunshine coaxing the flower blossoms from beneath the winter-hardened soil. The Easter Bunny has already come and gone, and plans are well underway for summer vacations and the tantalizing temptation of beach season. Seems we were only just beginning to put together our Christmas shopping lists not so long ago, doesn’t it? It’s funny, how this concept of time seems to work its way into nearly every conversation in one respect or another the lack of it, its tendency to pass by too quickly… seldom have I heard the argument that there is simply too much time to know what to do with. Never, in fact. Seems this would be a rather enviable problem to have. But alas, this is most certainly not the case. As with most of life’s

Football & Cheer Registration
The Long Island Broncos Football and Cheerleading Organization is based in Seaford and was established in 1966. Their goal is, and always has been, to create a safe environment for our children to learn the fundamentals of football and cheerleading, along with the importance of good sportsmanship and being a team player. More than anything else, they want their kids to have fun on the field and mat, and to learn to love the game. They are looking forward to another great season, and they will once again be offering
free offseason clinics to registered Broncos (Speed and Agility, Viking-Bronco Never Quit Football Clinic, etc.), providing our coaches with proper training, including CPR/First Aid/ AED certifications, and making sure the Broncos are involved with various community events and service learning opportunities, all while learning the many important lessons that youth sports have to offer, including commitment, work ethic, sportsmanship and family. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that registration for the 2018 Summer Recreation Program is now open for children ages 4-12. The program runs from Monday, July 2nd through Friday, August 10th. This affordable summer recreation program includes exciting activities such as sports, arts and crafts, a scavenger hunt, sprinkler party, pizza party, Carnival Day and Crazy Hat Day. Children may also sign up for field trips to locations such as Adventureland, Splish Splash, a Day at the Movies and more (off-site activities depend on age and parental permission and require an additional fee). The program is separated into the following age categories: early childhood (Ages 4, 5 and 6); juniors (7-8); intermediate (9-10); and seniors (11-12). Culture Comes to Massapequa To celebrate National Foreign Language Week, the Massapequa High School French Club and French Honor Society hosted a cultural celebration on March 16th. All students, regardless of the world language they take, were invited to visit the classroom that was transformed into a French café after school. French music played in the background as visitors enjoyed treats such as croissants, chocolate
mousse, macaroons and other delicacies. Along the wall hung flags from countries that have large French-speaking populations including Belgium, Canada, France and Luxembourg. There were also crafts that highlighted culture in French-speaking regions. Students could make bracelets at the Paris table, because the city is well known for fashion, create Mardi Gras masks and king hats at the New Orleans
table or make fish crafts for Tahiti. There were also photo booths with Frenchthemed backgrounds and props. Organizers included world language teachers Evelyne LeGoupil and Gheisha Rodriguez, French Club President Jackie Kanapes and French Honor Society President Victoria Bal. They said they enjoyed seeing people come together to celebrate French culture.

Parents who want to keep teens nearby can create hangout spaces at home that make it easy for teens to feel comfortable with their friends. How to hang photos and artwork with ease Personal touches turn a house into a home. Hanging pictures, whether they’re personal photographs or artwork, can really change the character of a room. Unfortunately, some people may not know the proper ways to display pictures on a wall. Design maven Martha Stewart advises that the first step is to gather all of the pictures that are in consideration for hanging. This will enable a person to see what is available and edit their selection based on the space available, theme or color scheme. Having the artwork there enables a person to move it around like a puzzle until the placement feels just right. Next, plan on hanging artwork at 57 inches on center, according to the renovation experts at Apartment Therapy. “On center” means the middle of the photograph or painting will always be at 57,” as this measurement represents the average human eye height. This height is regularly used as a standard in many galleries and museums.
There are no hard and fast rules concerning frames, meaning they do not all have to match. But placing framed artwork side by side can give a person a feel for whether the images and the frames work together in the space. Some people like to use frames of similar colors and sizes. Others want the eclectic mix-and-match appeal. It’s ultimately up to the homeowner. Measuring is key to hanging a picture correctly on the wall. Take into consideration the type of attachment, whether it’s D-rings, sawtooth hangers, wire or other fasteners on the back. Measure from the top of the frame to the hanger. Measure the wall to achieve
the 57” on center location, and then calculate where this falls within the height of the artwork and frame top. Adjust accordingly and mark. Then measure the distance from the frame top to the hanger location on the wall. Be sure to take the weight of the picture into consideration when selecting hanging hardware. Wall anchors may be needed if measurements determine a wall stud will not help secure the artwork — to keep the frame sturdy in the drywall. Home improvement resource Today’s Homeowner also suggests using self-adhesive rubber bumpers to the bottom corners on the back of the frame before hanging so that the picture will not damage the wall and will help it hang level. It can take a few attempts to hang pictures correctly, but with practice it should come with greater ease. The good news is there are new products constantly being evolved to make picture hanging easier, including those that enable removal and relocation of artwork without damaging walls.

a single unit. This means creating the layout and finding the center of the middle piece of the grouping. To make picture grouping easier, use paper templates with arrows to indicate whether the artwork will be hung horizontally or vertically. Fun Adds Up A 15-year tradition at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District continued on March 26th as about 50 students and their parents turned out for Family Math Night. The event was open to students in third, fourth and fifth grades. There were numerous games using manipulatives such as dominoes, dice, coins and pattern blocks for children to practice mathematical skills in a relaxed setting. Posterboards featured challenging word problems based upon the math modules.
Family Math Night was coordinated by math support teachers Jean Scavella and Cara Dulko, as well as computer teacher assistant Susan Corrado. They said the purpose was to help students develop their problem-solving and critical thinking abilities through fun but challenging activities. In Money Puzzle, the goal was to figure out what combination of coins made $1.64. Summit featured students competing against their parents to roll dice and create two three-digit numbers that added up to the highest total.
There was also music in math station, as well as computer math games on Chromebooks. To celebrate spring, all children were invited to guess the number of jelly beans in a jar. “This gave the parents a sampling of what their children are learning in school and a chance to see the challenging math problems they face every day,” Ms. Scavella said. “It was nice to have the families come together and do activities to see how fun and how useful math is.”

Audiences got a taste of Broadway as the drama club at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District presented “Spotlight” on March 23rd. During a morning show for students and two evening shows for families, a cast of approximately 80 fourth- and fifth-graders performed 13 numbers from well-known musicals such as “Annie,” “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” “School of Rock,” “Alice in Wonderland” and “Les Miserables.” The musical-review format may have been a change from prior years,
but the array of high-energy songs and the enthusiasm of the performers made it a can’t-miss show. It was all tied together by student hosts Aedan Fitzsimmons and Brian Rivas, who introduced each number and also entertained the crowds with their joke and witty banter. The show ended with “We’re All in This Together” from “High School Musical.” Performers reveled in their chance to share their musical talents, such as fifth-grader Finn Curley who had a solo in “The Candy Man” and fifthgrader Sofia Maran who
portrayed Veruca Salt in singing “I Want it Now.” “The show gave me an opportunity to face my fear, which is singing in front of a large crowd,” added fourth-grader Giavanna Pizzo. “I decided that performing is something I love and that’s why I did it. It was a great experience.” The show was directed by music teacher Brittany Bissonnette, who was assisted by Kathleen Dyckman and Jessica Wyman. Students from Berner Middle School provided technical support backstage.
Spring Co-Ed Programs Spring is here and Councilman Lou Imbroto invites residents to take part in several fun co-ed recreational programs. Co-Ed Badminton, CoEd Volleyball and Co-Ed Basketball will all be taking place at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic beginning the second week in April. “These fun and recreational programs are open to residents age 18 and older,” Councilman Imbroto said. “They are a great way to kick-start a healthy and active spring. These programs not only offer residents health benefits, but also provide a social opportunity for making new friends.” The Co-Ed Volleyball program starts on Monday, April 9th and will be held on Mondays from 9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Wednesdays from 9:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
A Competitive Volleyball Hour is available to registered Spring 2018 players on Mondays from 10:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. The cost for Volleyball is $75 for residents and $100 for non-residents. The Volleyball program is 12 weeks in duration. Proof of residency is required for the resident discount. The Co-Ed Badminton program starts on Tuesday, April 10th. There will be two sessions available for registrants to choose: Session 1 will be held on Tuesdays from 8:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Fridays from 8:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Sundays from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Session 2 will be held on Tuesdays from 10:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., Fridays from 10:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The cost for Badminton is $75 for residents and $100 for non-residents. The Badminton program is 12

Chiefs Play Ball Massapequa High School’s new baseball field got its first taste of game action as the Chiefs hosted the Farmingdale Dalers on March 26th in its home opener at the newly renovated complex. The upgrades were part of athletic field renovations at the high school from a facilities bond approved by the community in 2014, which also included a new track, turf football field and tennis courts. Improvements to the baseball field included artificial turf replacing a grass and dirt field, as well as new dugouts, bleachers,
announcer booth, sound system, fencing, protective netting and windscreens. The field will be used by the seven-time Long Island champions, with their most recent title coming last year. Senior Andrew Primm, the Chiefs’ starting catcher, said he and his teammates appreciate the district’s support and will strive to return to the state baseball playoffs. “We love the new field and it’s really going to help the Massapequa baseball program,” he said. “It shows that they care a lot about us.” A pregame ceremony to
celebrate the opening of the new field was hosted by East Lake Elementary School Principal Thomas McKillop and included remarks from Assistant Superintendent Dr. Thomas Fasano, varsity baseball coach Tom Sheedy, Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and local youth baseball league officials. John Piropato, the director of health, physical education, athletics and recreation, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. After the national anthem, it was time to play ball.

Friends of Karen
Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. I had the pleasure of meeting with some of their staff members to grasp a better understanding of all they have done and all they continue to do for those in need. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. It is apparent to me that Friends of Karen wants whomever is going through a tough and unimaginable critical illness to know that they are not alone and that help is available for them. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at
Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to cross the finish line knowing they’re making a difference in the lives of many. If you are interested in participating in either or both of these races with colleagues, as a family or individually, you can sign up today! Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering your time preparing for the event - handing out t-shirts, making sure every participant has what he or she needs, etc.; or at the event - taking photos for promotional purposes, you can do so.
