Participants taking the plunge into ice cold water this year were “Freezin for a Reason,” as all of the money raised during the Polar Plunge will go on to fund the Special Olympics’ continuing efforts to help intellectually challenged individuals achieve unexpected goals.

The Long Island based credit union NEFCU announced today the 2015 recipients of its annual Making A Difference college scholarship program, granting a total of $12,500 to 10 local college students. The scholarship program recognizes students currently enrolled at accredited universities, colleges and community colleges who have succeeded in both their classrooms and communities. Those eligible for the scholarships must be members of NEFCU or related to a member. Since the establishment of the Making A Difference scholarship program, over 10 years ago, students have been awarded over $1,000,000 in grants. “NEFCU is proud to continue the tradition of offering a scholarship

program for our members and their families. We believe that investing in education produces great returns,” said Valerie Garguilo, vice president of marketing and community relations for NEFCU. “This year’s scholarship recipients are all very bright, wellrounded individuals and we congratulate them for their academic achievements.” Through the “Making A Difference” college scholarship program, NEFCU awarded five $1,500 vouchers to undergraduate and graduate students (with a minimum GPA of 3.5), and five $1,000 vouchers to students enrolled at an accredited community college (with at least a 3.0 GPA). In addition to meeting the academic qualifications, applicants were required to answer

an essay question, as well as provide a resume and an unofficial transcript from their school. It is a truly admirable feat to be able to maintain such a mentality day in and day out, despite all those forces conspiring against us.

COURT OF HONOR - An Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony for Kevin Woll of Boy Scout Troop 339 Massapequa Park was recently held. Councilman Joseph Pinto presented Kevin with a Citation in recognition of the hours of hard work and community service that he put in to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Also in attendance was Kevin’s family, Mayor Jeffrey Pravato, President of the Massapequa Board of Education Jane Ryan, Trustee Richard Begandy and Senator Michael Venditto.

RAISING FUNDS - Students at Grace Day School in Massapequa raised over $400 to help patients with leukemia & lymphoma. Under the direction of teacher, Mr. Joe Barbato, they participated in a program called Pennies for Patients. They joined students across the country by collecting pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters over a three-week period. Their goal was to reach $300. They were very happy and surprised to learn that they had passed their goal amount by more than 25%. Congratulations on a great job, students!
