For many a sewing machine means having the possibility of making a livelihood. Bette Bass who was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Peru and now lives in Massapequa, says, “The donation of one bike or sewing machine can literally help put food on the table and smiles on the faces of a whole family.” Pedals for Progress also promotes bicycle repair businesses in the developing world. A community owned nonprofit bike store will get its first containerized cargo shipment for free (about 450 bicycles); that repair store then has to earn enough money selling the repaired bikes to pay for the next

shipment. David Schwidenback, the president of Pedals for Progress, says the collection on April 18th will be sent to FIDESMA, a non-profit, nonpolitical, non-religious development foundation in Chimaltenango Guatemala. Says Schwidenback, “The Long Island Returned Peace Corps volunteers

have been integral to the success of Pedals for Progress by effectively recycling the bicycles and sewing machines of Long Island. Of the many organizations that collect bicycles annually, the LIRPCV collections have consistently been the most successful. Their efforts have lifted thousands of people

Long Islanders can put their old bicycles to good use by donating them to Pedals for Progress, a program that rescues unwanted American bicycles (and sewing machines) and sends them to communities overseas. On Saturday, April 18th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., members of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island will accept donations of bicycles, sewing machines and cash for their 13th annual collection at the Massapequa Public Library, 40 Harbour Lane, Massapequa. Pedals for Progress has received, processed and donated over 143,000 bicycles, nearly 3,000 sewing machines and $10.8 million in new spare parts to partner charities in 38 developing world countries. In many countries, having a bicycle can have a critical

INSPIRATION SENSATION

SUBMITTED BY: Great attitude and positivity are components needed to achieve success. L’Damian Washington, NFL wide receiver, experienced heartbreak many times throughout his efforts to become a professional athlete. L’Damian grew up with his three other brothers, LaCourtney, Tomarious and Tobias. His parents were Sonya Washington and William Myles. L’Damian was born in May of 1991, in Shreveport, Louisiana. When L’Damian was just 6 years old, his father was murdered. Ever since, his mother took care of all four children by herself. Mrs. Washington was the biggest sports fan L’Damian knew. Her smile was the first smile he saw after every game. At age 15, L’Damian’s best friend was murdered. During that same year, Mrs. Washington had been cheering for L’Damian at his high school basketball game when she had a stroke and passed away. He quotes, “I wish I was cherishing her today instead of just her memory.”

LaCourtney, the oldest brother, took charge as head of the household. He worked as much as he had to in order to put food on the table and keep their home. L’Damian started playing football at age 9. He was passionate about playing football. He had an outstanding football season in his senior year with a 3.5 GPA. L’Damian visited Louisiana Tech and Missouri colleges. He loved everything about the University of Missouri. The support from his brothers led L’Damian to signing with Missouri. In his 2012 season, which was Missouri’s first foray into the SEC, he contributed 443 yards with 2 touchdowns. L’Damian’s career-best performance was in his senior year, with 50 receptions, 893 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns. All this time, L’Damian was devoted to keeping

HIGH SCHOOL his family together. Pro Day was his last chance to make an impression on scouts. That day, he recorded a 4.39 second 40-yard dash, which ranked among the 20 fastest receivers in the 2014 NFL draft. The Dallas Cowboys signed L’Damian as an undrafted free agent after the draft. He is currently a wide receiver on the Miami Dolphins. L’Damian sees his story as one of an unimaginable opportunity rather than heartbreak. With his determination and great attitude, L’Damian became an NFL player, but more importantly supported his family. The moral of his life story is not only to be thankful for what you have, but also to stay positive and keep moving forward. If L’Damian can overcome such difficult obstacles, you can too. He believes without these difficult experiences, he wouldn’t be the person he is today. L’Damian plans to keep working hard, learn new things, and stay true to himself.

Trinity and his nephew Matthew Buoneto graduated in ’01. After high school, Patrick attended Niagara University and then Mary Immaculate Seminary in Northampton, Pennsylvania interrupted for a year of Novitiate in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. As the Seminary closed in 1990, Patrick continued his formation at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington, New York where he was awarded a Masters in Divinity. Ordained at the Shrine of the Miraculous Medal in Germantown in 1992, Fr. Pat was assigned to parochial work at Immaculate Conception Church in Germantown. After two years, he returned to Niagara University and served as Campus Minister. In 1998, Fr. Pat pursued doctoral studies in theological etherics at DePaul University and was awarded a doctorate in 2007. Fr. Pat was assigned to teaching at St.

involved with several fundraising projects for the school. When they sent their children to Trinity Mr. Don Gallant says, “They went in as good kids, for which we were blessed, and they came out as incredible young adults. We could not have asked for Brianna and Joe to receive a better education or experience. As a parent or a child, ‘Once a Titan always a Titan’! We are very proud to be Titans and plan to remain active within the school for as long as they will have us.” English teacher Mrs. Mary Ellen Martin will be receiving the “Sisters of Mercy Award for Service & Dedication to Mission”. Mrs. Martin’s dedication to Catholic education started during her high school years at Maria Regina in Uniondale. Mary Ellen went on to Pace University to receive a BA in English (theatre arts concentration) and Stony Brook to get an MA in Literature. Her inevitable journey to Holy Trinity

John’s University in 2003. Since 2003, he has taught primarily moral theology courses in the university’s Department of Theology and Religious Studies and has served as the Superior of the Vincentian community at St. John’s University since 2009. For the past year, Fr. Pat has served Holy Trinity on its Principal’s Advisory Board bringing to the board his experience as a board member of Niagara University, HeartShare Inc., Vincentian Solidarity Office, and the Society of Christian Ethics. The “Dominican Sisters Award for Parental Commitment to Catholic Education & Mission” will be presented to the Gallant Family of West Hempstead who has supported Holy Trinity since 2009, putting their daughter Brianna (Class of 2013) and their son, Joe (Class of 2015) through the school. Nearly ten years’ worth of weekly columns under the moniker “In Step,” a title suggested by my dear friend, co-worker and “agent” of sorts, since passed, Peter Schleifer. It was meant to be a take off on my - at that point - 13 years of dancing and the idea that, somehow, I could find a way to engage our weekly readership with my random ramblings and musings on life. It sounded like a pretty tall order then, and remains so, but having had a passion for writing since the days of poetry units and short story exercises in elementary school, I felt I was up for the challenge. To be given the opportunity to write for a living, to do something I loved and reach an audience… well, that’s pretty special any way you slice it.

The topics may have been varied, the styles quite diverse, but at the root of it all was that feeling that this was something I could do. Sure, there have been weeks when coming up with an original idea, any idea, was somewhat tedious. Scanning through the archive, there have been plenty of recycled concepts, even a few exact reruns of “classics.” (Classics? Really? Who do you think you are, Ed Lowe?) But through it all, that same passion has always remained. This is why I studied journalism. This was the reason for my career choice, in spite of all those detractors who warned that

it was impossible to make a living in this field. Ultimately, though, it was exactly that “reality” that served as added inspiration for me to go after my dreams. After all, who’s to say what’s profitable, what’s a guarantee for success? And what is success, if you’re not doing something you love? Ten years. 500 columns. Such a long time; such a lofty milestone. So much has changed since July of 2005, much of which has been reflected in those columns. They serve as a public diary of sorts, documenting the highs and lows, and a showcase for my efforts to somehow encapsulate them into words. Thank you to all those readers who have supported me along the way. Here’s to more memories and milestones!

came almost 30 years ago as a mid-year replacement in the English Department. Since then, Mary Ellen’s love of teaching led her to co-create Trinity’s esteemed Writing Program. Educational Technology magazine featured the program in an article highlighting the use of computer labs in teaching the writing process. What started as an elective for eleventh graders is now home to writing courses for all grade levels. Other activities that have kept Mary Ellen busy are her duties as co-moderator of the Student Council, oversight of the Holy Trinity Academic Challenge Club and the coordinator of the SMART program, a study skills program for incoming freshmen students. to square dance in their physical education classes as a way to develop teamwork skills, rhythm, auditory processing and large motor skills, according to physical education teachers Kieran O’Brien and Karen Flynn. The dancers were

prompted or cued by a caller, to follow a sequence of steps that went along to the beat of the music. The hoedown was judged by staff members and 24 winners who performed and dressed the best were treated to a lunch at All American Hamburger.

Acing The Exam Success adds up for 15 eighth-grade students from Alfred G. Berner Middle School. They achieved the highest marks in the school on the 2014 American Mathematics Contest 8 exam out of 237 students tested in their grade. Their marks ranged from 13 to 16 out of a possible 25; the national average is a score of 10. Ariana Fang received a 16, the highest score, followed by Matthew Ricupero, Devin Rosmarin, and Luke Weiss who all scored a 15. Three students scored a 14 including Laura Murphy, Matthew Farber and Barbara Lunz. Eight students scored a 13

questions on middle school mathematics. Questions are developed through the collaboration of teachers, mathematicians and professional organizations to provide challenging math problems that align with curriculum standards. According to the MAA, many colleges and universities request scores from these contests at the higher grade levels and use them for recruiting and admissions. Each high-scoring student will receive a certificate as recognition from the MAA for their achievement. The highestscoring student was also awarded a pin.

Kindergartners throughout the Massapequa School District worked their fine and gross motor skills by cutting, coloring, gluing, stacking, writing, drawing and exercising all in celebration of the 100th day of school. The vast array of fun-filled activities reinforced their understanding of the triple-digit number, and of math concepts such as how groups of 10 make 100 and how to count to the number by ones, fives and tens. Students at Fairfield Elementary School, with the help of parent volunteers, rotated to six different stations in which they made 100-day crowns decorated with 100 dots, completed a chart of 100 numbers, drew pictures incorporating the number 100, and wrote or drew what 100 means to

them. They also had fun stacking100 red cups and working their muscles by doing 10 exercises 10 times each. Lockhart students proudly wore 100th-day shirts that they made at home while participating in activities that included connecting 100 cubes together to see how long 100 is and creating a gumball machine with 100 gumballs inside. East Lake youngsters had fun creating 100day hats, playing math games on number charts and rotating to different activity stations. At McKenna, students went on a journey through the school by following 100 hearts and discovering “surprise” guests at the end of the trail: Principal Dr. Amanda Lowry and Assistant Principal Diane Sales. They learned how to use a tape measure by measuring a snake that

was 100 inches long and ate a snack in the shape of the number while listening to a story. Birch Lane youngsters were assigned a letter of the alphabet and were asked to collect 100 objects beginning with that letter. They celebrated by sharing their 100th-day collections in class, making hats, singing songs and listening to their teachers read the book “Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th Day of Kindergarten.” Celebrations at Unqua included counting 100 beads to make necklaces, coloring 100 day pictures using paint sticks, making 100 day hats using 100 stickers, matching numbers 1-100 on the number chart and picking 10 objects from 10 containers to make a goodie bag.

Game Raises Funds

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the varsity boys basketball team, coaches and alumni, the boys booster club, and family and friends of the boys basketball program, the Fourth Annual Alumni Basketball Game held in Massapequa High School’s gymnasium raised $2,500 for the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. The artistic talent of 30 students from Massapequa School District will be on display at the Art Supervisors Association’s (ASA) 11th Annual Nassau All-County Art Exhibition, Sunday, March 15th. The free event takes place at the Ruth S. Harley Center at Adelphi University from 12 to 4 p.m. and honors more than 1200 students from kindergarten through grade 12 who have demonstrated excellence in a wide variety of twodimensional visual art forms including drawing, painting, printmaking, computer graphics and photography. The ASA, in its efforts to nurture young artists, will also present Massapequa High School senior Peter

DeVito and nearly 50 other graduating seniors a scholarship during a special Scholarship Awards Ceremony preceding the exhibit. The Massapequa students featured in the exhibit are: Birch Lane students Jackson MacLeod, Ava Bendowski and Olivia Kostaris; East Lake students Emmy Aird, Leann DeLeon and Gina Sparacino; Fairfield students Grace Schafer, Jeremy Winter and Emily Balducci; McKenna students Abbey Sullivan, Kathryn O’Farrell and Tyler Fennell; Unqua students Isabella Quartiere, Michael Justi and Madison Fung; Berner students Gabriella Marsico, Adriana Zanone and Kevin McLeer; Ames students Raymond

Spinelli, Ryan Lee and Ashley Braunstein; and Massapequa High School students Sabrina Montella, Brigette Box, Christina Lipari, Cameron Matassa, Leslie Fiene, Kaitlyn Lucey, Peter DeVito, Alexandria Hensler and Aislinn Foley. “This event gives our community the opportunity to appreciate the creativity, imagination and skill that is produced by a fundamental, innovative, and vibrant K-12 sequential visual arts education,” said Barbara Mims, Massapequa’s coordinating chairperson for Art, K-12 and co-chair of the exhibit. “We are very proud that the talents of Massapequa students are represented in this prestigious exhibition.”

High School Hockey Championship The Town of Oyster Bay High School Hockey Championship will be held at the Town’s Ice Skating Center in Bethpage on the evening of Saturday, March 14th, at 7 p.m. The contest will feature the Plainedge Red Devils squaring off against the Syosset Braves, two accomplished squads that had outstanding seasons. The Town is proud to host this outstanding event. The sport of hockey is extremely popular on Long Island and local residents will have a unique opportunity to see some of the area’s best young hockey players competing at a very high level. For many years, the Town of Oyster Bay has conducted a highly regarded ice hockey program that now has grown to include hundreds of participants of all ages. The program instills

valuable lessons about teamwork, dedication and perseverance. The town’s comprehensive youth hockey program has undoubtedly helped local high school ice hockey teams to be successful. Over the years, the Town league has produced some very talented players. The Town of Oyster Bay High School Hockey League, which is run in conjunction with the High School Hockey League of Nassau County Inc., features teams from Massapequa, Plainedge, Cold Spring Harbor, Syosset, Bethpage, Locust Valley-North Shore and Jericho. The Town of Oyster Bay High School Hockey Championship game is a premier event for all of the teams that play in the Town of Oyster Bay League. Adding additional intrigue to the game will be inclusion of the Red Devils team, whose

program was started up this season after a long hiatus. The team is a comparative newcomer to the league, and here they are already playing in the championship game. They have a tough task ahead of them in taking on perennial powerhouse Syosset. It should be a great game for players and spectators alike. The Town championship, which last year featured the Syosset High School Braves prevailing in a hard fought contest with the Massapequa High School Chiefs, provides exciting competition, a healthy recreational outlet for participants and an enjoyable event for spectators. It is also a nice compliment that very accomplished teams enjoy playing here in the Town of Oyster Bay.

The Town of Oyster Bay 2015 Distinguished Artists Concert series continues into March with a number of wonderful performances scheduled at various libraries throughout the Town. The Distinguished Artists performances are one of the Town’s most popular programs, running through May 2015 and featuring performances by a variety of musical acts and dance programs. These concerts, all free of charge, display a wide variety of interests and talents exhibited by residents here in the Town. These concerts provide residents with high quality cultural and performing arts entertainment in the comfort and convenience of their local library. On Saturday, March 14th, at 7:30 p.m. at the Syosset Public Library, located at 225 South Oyster Bay Rd, Syosset, Jimmy Moore will

present “The Irish Show,” featuring beautiful Irish standards with props and stories to warm the Irish heart in all of us. On Sunday, March 15th, at 2 p.m., singer Naomi Zeitlin will perform “Songs of the Movies,” a dynamic performance featuring popular tunes from movies, old and new, at the Bethpage Public Library, located at 47 Powell Ave, in Bethpage. On Sunday, March 22nd, at 2 p.m., awardwinning saxophonist Shenole Latimer will be playing in the unique styles of some of his most inspirational influences; Michael Brecker, Branford Marsalis & Dexter Gordon at the Locust Valley Public Library, located at 170 Buckram Road, in Locust Valley. On Saturday, March 28th, at 8 p.m., popular recording artists of the 50’s and 60’s “The Fabulaires”

will perform “Doo Wop at its Best!,” featuring their hits “The Wedding Song” and “Lonely Days, Lonely Nights” among others. Residents are invited to a trip down memory lane at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library, located at 999 Old Country Road, in Plainview. On Sunday, March 29th, at 1 p.m., Mambo Loco will perform Old School Latin Music from the 40’s to the 70’s at the Massapequa Public Library, located at 523 Central Ave, in Massapequa. “The instructional addition to the facility turns the fitness room into a learning lab,” Piropato said. “A perfect example is our tenth-grade Personal Fitness course where students’ personal fitness plans can be researched and practiced in a safe environment.” Students are welcome to work out after school from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m. and athletic teams are able to train from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. with their coach’s supervision. Currently the facility is open to the community though a 10-week course called “Introduction to Fitness Training,” offered through the district’s Adult Continuing Education Program. Special needs students are also benefitting from a 10week, after-school adapted fitness program that runs from 2:30 p.m.to 3:10 p.m. These programs are expected to expand in the future. Summer fitness programs are also on the docket, though the details are still in the works.
