I remember the day like it was yesterday… which is fairly impressive, considering it was actually 17 years ago, to the day in fact. This momentous occasion of which I speak, on March 8th, 2000, was the date I was told by our high school principal that I was, in fact, “officially” the valedictorian of our senior class. I can’t say the news was a complete shock, as we had all been given informal ranks pending the start of the college application process several months prior. At the time, my guidance counselor had informed my parents and I that all paperwork sent out from the administrative offices would name me as “approximately” first, a fact that I had never even thought to consider up until that very moment. I had always enjoyed school and had accumulated a collection of Honors and Advanced Placement classes

on my transcript by my senior year; but class rank was not something I had ever particularly focused my attention on. I knew it existed, obviously; but most colleges were more concerned with your overall GPA and SAT scores, not your comparison among a class of your peers. As I rounded the corner on that afternoon, en route to our “rotunda” outside the cafeteria, I was startled to find the principal seated there next to one of my friends. “Oh good, you’re here,” he said. Uh oh, I thought. My mind raced, trying to determine what I could have done to warrant this unexpected visit. Next to him, my friend had a sly smile on his face. What is this about? I couldn’t imagine. “I have some news,” he grinned, standing up and extending his hand in congratulations. “It’s official – you’re number one.” And there it was. Twelve years of hard work and

dedication, culminating in that moment, that handshake – and those five words. It was unforgettable, so much so that I chose to capture the instant in one of my college scholarship essays. The theme was “The Most Memorable Moment of My Life.” And it was; possibly, still is. The bell rang, signaling it was time to head to our next class. But I had something to do first. I raced over to the wall of payphones by our front entrance, digging for quarters as I ran through the hallway (remember, this was 17 years ago). My hands shaking, I excitedly dialed my home number. “Mom!” I practically squealed into the receiver. “Guess what???” Since then, that date has been ingrained in my mind. Each year, it comes and goes, bringing with it a smile as I recall all the happy memories of a moment that seems so fresh … and yet, so very, very long ago. Officially.

Magical Music and More The Town of Oyster Bay’s Children’s Magical Music & More program will feature three excellent performances in March beginning with “Central Park Zoo: Butterfly Boogie,” a musical, interactive performance that counters the common perception of bugs being gross and introduces students to metamorphosis and the interdependence of plants and animals. Butterfly Boogie will be

The Village will celebrate its Annual Earth Day and Beautification Program on Saturday, April 29th. For over twenty years, local groups have come together to clean and spruce up the Village. In doing so, they enjoy spending a day outside and are treated to lunch served by local dignitaries and senior citizens.

The Greater Massapequa Day Committee, together with the Village of Massapequa Park, will host another event for the veterans at Northport Veterans Administration Medical Center. Massapequa Cares will take place on April 29th. Numerous volunteers will distribute many needed items to the veterans. Anyone wishing to volunteer may call Village Hall at 798-0244 ext. 111. Memorial Day Parade: Monday, May 29, 2017

Dear Fellow Residents: With the first major winter storm of the season behind us, I am proud to say our Department of Public Works did a good job in clearing our Village roads. Hopefully this will be the last storm, but I am sure Mother Nature is not done with us yet. I can assure you that we are ready for whatever she throws our way. I do ask again that when blowing or shoveling snow during snow storms, please be sure to place it onto your property and not in the street as it creates a hazard for everyone. As we come into March and April, we will finally see the flowers and trees begin to bloom and the birds sing. It just feels like life starts to come back from its winter break. This is one of my favorite seasons of the year. This year we will continue to improve our roads. We will be reconstructing and repaving roads throughout the Village. The Board has also authorized an engineering firm to prepare a full evaluation of all the roads in the Village. It has been over a decade since the last study was done and we felt it was time for a fresh look at our roads.

I can report to you that our Village is in excellent fiscal shape, with a bond rating of Aa2 from Moody’s Investor Services. This is a result of the hard work of our Board and Village staff. It is my opinion that we have one of the best run Villages on Long Island. Our business district continues to be second to none. We have some of the most successful businesses on Long Island right here in our Village. Almost every day and night our downtown is full of life. It is really great to see everyone shop and dine locally in our wonderful Village. With spring arriving, we have many annual events. Massapequa Cares will host its annual event at the Northport Veterans Hospital. Many volunteers join in this event to stage a USO type show and distribute care packages to our veterans. The Village will, once again, host our Annual Earth Day celebration that brings so many local volunteer groups, Boy and Girl scouts and residents together to help keep the Village clean. And finally we have our Memorial Day Parade. This is the day we come out and say thank you to all of our veterans for all they have done for us. It is because of them that we enjoy all the freedoms that we have today. In closing, I wish you all a warm balance of the winter. Hopefully the ground hog is wrong and we have an early spring. Please remember to shop and dine locally. Our merchants are the best and they need our support. On behalf of the board and myself, we thank you for your continued support.

Massapequa Coast Little League will kick off the season with their annual Opening Day Parade, April 1st. The Parade will travel from Birch Lane Elementary School to John Burns Park, where the Opening Day Ceremonies will be held. (Rain date April 2nd)

One Day Parking Permits One day resident commuter parking permits are available for purchase at Village Hall, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Current automobile registration is required. The fee for the one day permit is $1.00.

The Village is pleased to offer to residents the Mommy & Me Program at Brady Park. Registration for the 2017 Summer Session and 2017/2018 Fall Session will be held on Friday, March 31st between 12:00 pm and 2:30 pm at the Brady Park Community Center. Classes meet on Wednesdays at 10:00 am and 1:00 pm. There is no registration fee, proof of Village residency is required, class size is limited and enrollment is by lottery. You can obtain more information about this wonderful program by calling 799-0948.

Don’t Block The Sidewalk - Be Nice To Pedestrians New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law prohibits cars from blocking the sidewalk. Pedestrians must walk in the street when cars block the sidewalk creating an unsafe situation.

Pool safety is an important concern of all residents. To ensure safety in and around pools, residents should be aware of the following Village ordinances: • All pools must be equipped with removable or retractable-type ladders or steps for entering or leaving the pool. When not in use, the ladders must be removed and/or locked in the upward position. • A fence must completely surround the area in which the pool is located and be structurally sound. • Access gates must be self-closing and have a self-latching device. Access gates must open outward away from the pool. • All doors with direct access to the pool area shall be equipped with an alarm. LANDSCAPERS

All landscapers must be licensed in the Village of Massapequa Park. Landscapers cannot perform work earlier than 8:00 am on weekdays and 9:00 am on Saturdays. No work is permitted on Sundays. In additon, landscapers must dispose of all clippings when leaving the job sites.

SIDEWALKS & TREE TRIMMING

Residents are reminded that sidewalks and tree trimming are the responsibility of the homeowner. Sidewalks should be kept in good repair to eliminate any dangerous situations. Trees should be trimmed over the sidewalks to 8 feet so that overhanging limbs will not interfere with passers-by. Trees over the street should be trimmed to allow the street sweeper to pass. Any questions concerning sidewalks or trees can be referred to Residential Services in Village Hall at 708-0244 ext. 113.

VILLAGE TAXES ARE DUE

Residents are reminded that Village taxes are due June 1st through July 3rd, 2017. Penalties accrue as of July 4th. New residents should verify that tax bills are being sent to the proper party. Also, residents who recently satisfied their mortgage or refinanced, should contact Village Hall to ensure that tax bills are addressed properly. Questions concerning taxes may be referred to 798-0244 ext. 117 or 115.

PARKING PERMITS

Massapequa Park parking permits expire on May 31, 2017. A renewal application will be mailed to each person who presently has a commuter parking permit. Parking permits will be sold at Village Hall during business hours beginning May 1st. Applicants must present their current automobile registration.

EXTENDED HOURS

For the convenience of residents, Village Hall will remain open Thursday evening until 8:00 pm during the months of May and June. Residents may apply for parking permits, garage sale permits, block party permits, hunting and fishing licenses, pay taxes and obtain general information. The Court will remain closed and the Building Department will only distribute necessary forms.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Joseph G. Pinto recently joined with members of the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce at their annual luncheon for the Volunteer Firefighter of the Year Awards Ceremony held at Zona Restaurant in Massapequa.

Supervisor Saladino, Councilman Pinto and the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce honored Volunteer Firefighters from the Massapequa Fire Department for outstanding and extraordinary job performance, bravery, exemplary service and a steadfast commitment to

the business community and residents. Supervisor Saladino and Councilman Pinto presented citations to Richard Paul and Barney Muldoon commending them for their extraordinary service to the department and to the community-at-large.

Warming Up to Art Art students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District learned about the difference between warm colors and cool colors by creating three-dimensional projects. Led by teacher Nicole Hassell, fourth-graders used weaving and looming techniques to make webs with construction paper.

Students could choose to make warm webs with strips of red, orange and yellow paper, or cool webs with shades of green, blue and purple. In two rows of boxes on the floor made from masking tape, students carefully arranged their webs. By mixing the warm and cool colors just right, the young artists

learned about balance and composition. Ms. Hassell said the purpose of the project was to teach them a new technique that built off of the art skills they have learned in the past. The webs created by all fourth-grade students will be used for a larger art project to hang in the lobby.

The Massapequa High School girls varsity gymnastics team captured its second straight title during the championship meet on February 16th in Bethpage. The Chiefs went undefeated this season to

place first in Conference I. Three members of the team, Heidi Baldinger, Elizabeth Murphy and Gillian Murphy, qualified for the New York State meet. They will represent Nassau County during the

competition at Cold Spring Harbor High School on March 4th. The girls were led by head coach Michael Capone and assistant coach Lisa Ranneklev.
