Youngsters, with the assistance of parent volunteers, busily honed their fine and gross motor skills by cutting, coloring, gluing, stacking, drawing and exercising in ways that marked the number 100. March. That month of transition. The beginning of spring and all things new. A rebirth of sorts. Or so we convince ourselves, anyway. Why not January, or February? I suppose weather has as much to do with our moods as any internal factors; and, while March makes no promises with regard to its atmospheric conditions, I think we can safely assume that the worst of winter is now behind us. There is something about the blossoming of trees and flowers, the lengthening of daylight hours, the greening of the now-barren grounds… it signals a revitalization of the year as it stands, a pause in the monotony, a gradual phasing out of the state of hibernation many of us have

been mired in since the holiday season. Just last weekend, I took the time to stroll along two of our pristine Long Island beaches – one on the outskirts of Northport, and the other out on the North Fork. Sure, it was a bit brisk and barren; but just to experience the fresh sea air, to feel the sand beneath my (sneakered) feet, to gaze out onto the crystal blue Long Island Sound… there is something to be said for venturing outside and exploring. That said, it would’ve been nice to have maybe just a couple more snow days to vegetate with a clear conscience, to stay under the covers and catch up on Netflix. The one true “blizzard” was exactly that, one and done, over a weekend. Kind of a waste. The rest of the “snow

days” were more of a minor inconvenience, not nearly enough down time to truly capitalize. That’s the thing about time. When we have it to spare, we don’t often utilize it to its full potential, choosing instead to waste it idling away the hours on trivial things like sleep and mindless chores. Instead, choose to take that leisurely drive, set out on a new adventure to an unexplored corner of the world – even within your own neighborhood. Take pictures, read books, paint, write a song… do things you’ve always wanted to do, today. Tomorrow may be partly cloudy with a chance of rain; but that also means there’s at least an equal chance of sun. May spring be that season of hope for everyone.

Musician Jared Campbell captured the attention of freshmen at Massapequa High School-Ames Campus as he delivered sobering topics through a combination of comedy and song. Campbell, who sounds hauntingly similar to actor Jack Black, drew in his young audience as he showed videos and sang his folksy-rock songs about people in his life that overcame difficult obstacles. He sang about “focusing on your dreams” and the importance of keeping

people around you that can give you support, especially in times of tragedy. He addressed topics such as anti-bullying, respect and leadership. And, encouraged students to use good judgment and to find their own true passion. He also pointed out that positive schools, families and communities are filled with individuals that appreciate others, and that students often need inspiration to attain or regain their focus for the future. Campbell’s mission is to “reach the young people of

today and encourage them to never stop dreaming and to continue pushing forward to living out your purpose with passion.” An awardwinning singer/songwriter, he performed at hundreds of schools and shared the stage with musicians such as Jason Mraz, Gavin Degraw and Journey. invention by Lockhart Elementary School fifth-grader Christopher Guglielmo was a working prototype, according to his Magnet teacher Joanne Markowski. “This is to help you have a better car ride home from sporting practices and games without the stench of wet, dirty clothes,” Christopher said. “All you have to do is slide your clothes into the Triple S device, add a fabric softener sheet and attach a blow dryer to the end of the Triple S and turn it on. After a while, your clothes will be dry and smell great!” Earlier in the day, three real-life inventors, sparked students’ curiosity when they presented their inventions in small groups and discussed the invention process. Students were intrigued by Richard Edelman, who invented numerous board games and other innovations, Art Lih, longtime Massapequa resident who developed the LifeVac, a device that saves children from choking, and Kasia Sawicka who invented a vaccination patch that has been successfully tested and used to combat the flu, whooping cough, anthrax and other antigens. The patch, called the ImmunoMatrix, is a non-invasive device that uses nanofibers to hold and effectively deliver a vaccine through the skin. “This was a wonderful culminating event for all our Magnet students from each elementary school who, after working for weeks on their inventions, are able to share ideas and celebrate their achievements,” said McKenna Elementary School Magnet teacher Elizabeth Natke. “Bringing in real-life inventors really drives home what inventors do and how their inventions can change the way we live.”

Nearly 75 students in the district’s academically gifted Magnet program presented their ideas at the second annual Invention Convention at McKenna Elementary School, impressing parents and educators alike with their ingenuity. Need to cut out something but ordinary scissors won’t do the trick? Try Blissors, created by McKenna Elementary School fifth-grader Liliana Edzards. A pair of Blissors uses sensors and a telescopic robotic arm to follow any traced line and cut through difficult materials easily, making it ideal for crafters or fashion designers, according to its inventor. The Massapequa High School Varsity Cheerleaders made history when they competed for the first time in the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship at Walt Disney World. The team competed in the Super Varsity Division I category and placed among the top

11 teams. The competition is considered the most prestigious cheerleading championship in the country and was televised on ESPN and ESPN2 to over 100 million homes around the world, February 6th-7th. “It was my goal to set a new standard for the program by helping them

get to Disney and the feeling was so incredible!” said Head Coach Erica Jordan. After earning its bid to go to Nationals at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania in December, the squad spent the next two months preparing by practicing six days a week, while also cheering at all boys home

the squad also qualified for the Nassau County Championship, which took place at Wantagh High School, February 21st. The team came in third in the Large Varsity Division I category. It was the first county championship since the state recognized cheerleading as a sport.

New Facade Unveiled

Wednesday afternoon the Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center in Garden City, New York, officially named their mascot, a Dalmatian puppy, which is a piece of the building’s new façade, designed by H2M architects and engineers. H2M’s Director of Architecture, Joe Mottola, who is also a Massapequa

Volunteer Firefighter, is a board member at the museum and volunteered H2M’s services to design the façade. The project team for the design included Project Designer Katie Stone, Structural Engineering Department Manager Mike Mckeown, Staff Engineer Berhan Gebregziabiher and Project Designer Patrick Stone. The name of the Dalmatian was determined by a statewide New York contest last November inviting children age 12 and under to submit names for the official mascot of the center, a 25foot tall Dalmatian puppy, now adoring the façade of the museum. The winner is Lilyana Rodriguez, 5, of Massapequa, who chose the name Valiant to represent courage, an appropriate name to describe firefighters and the work they do. Lilyana was presented with a miniature firefighter uniform by the Museum’s Executive Director, Alana Petrocelli. The museum also hosted a celebratory

party after the ceremony for Lilyana and her family, classmates and friends. The Massapequa Volunteer Firefighters, including Joe Mottola, Pat Stone and TJ Corona attended the ceremony with their fire truck and used the 100-foot ladder to rise up to the dog and display his name on a large bone-shaped dog tag, as Lilyana revealed the name at the entrance of the museum for the news cameras and newspaper photographers as they captured the moment. “I’m very excited to have contributed our services to the museum, the firematic services and the community. Giving back to the community is of utmost importance and is furthered with this project by continuing the dream of the founders to provide a hands on opportunity to learn about fire safety for our youth and community members,” said Joe Mottola. “Congratulations to Lilyana and her family.” The project was initiated in order to improve the aesthetic of the façade, provide a statement piece that was highly visible to the surrounding area to attract visitors, and to introduce wayfinding signage for the museum’s entrance. The museum wanted a “whimsical” design that was kid-friendly. Opened in June 2006, the museum is a 10,000 square foot interactive facility where individuals and families can experience first-hand the proud tradition of firefighting in our communities. The new façade was completed in October 2015.

Celebrating New Year Unqua Elementary School fourth-graders in Peggy Meininger’s class learned about Chinese culture and traditions as they celebrated the Year of the Monkey. The class worked with an

interactive map and viewed artwork, photographs and artifacts from their teacher’s trips abroad. The students created bookmarks depicting fingerprint monkeys and the Chinese proverb, “See
