A program for students entering kindergarten through sixth grade is held at each elementary school, and teen center program for incoming seventh- and eighth-graders is at the Ames Campus. Prospective employees must be able to commit to the full five weeks. Applicants must live within the boundaries of the Massapequa School District, and all prior employees must re-apply. The application deadline is March 24 and must be submitted online only. New volunteer applicants must also include three letters of recommendation by March 31st. Are We There Yet? I’m fairly good with directions. For someone who, as a passenger, is rather oblivious to her surroundings, once in the driver’s seat, I can generally navigate with little trouble. 100 Days of Learning Kindergartners throughout the Massapequa School District recently celebrated the 100th day of school. Teachers used the

milestone as a way to build literacy, math and science skills, and encourage physical fitness. Many students wore special T-shirts and hats.

Activities included doing 100 exercises in groups of 10, stacking 100 plastic cups, making necklaces with 100 beads and spelling 100 words.

Using Zoom In, teacher Kim Kelly found a unique way to introduce a multidisciplinary lesson to her first-grade students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. On the SmartBoard, Ms. Kelly showed her students a portion of a photo and asked them to write down their observations. She slowly revealed more of the picture until the children saw a drawing of a bear sleeping in a cave. They soon learned they would be reading the book “Hibernation.” The children received copies of the story and got together with their reading partners. They followed up by using PebbleGo on Chromebooks, a database for early elementary students, to answer any questions that emerged during their reading. The lesson combined literacy and science while teaching students to become inquisitive readers and helping them develop their research skills.

Poets’ Corner Presented by South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

To enhance their knowledge of Greek mythology, sixth-grade students at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District created their own Greek theater masks depicting the noted gods and goddesses. Thousands of years ago,

people in Greece performed plays to entertain and inform, in which the gods and goddesses became the main characters in the myths that were told. Former Lockhart teacher Larry Laifer brought his program to the school, “Greek Mythology Unmasked.”

Students used their creativity and imaginations to make their own masks and bring these characters to life, just as the Greeks did in ancient times. The program also included songs, writing activities and games on the SmartBoard.

The Positive Post-It Campaign has come to the Massapequa School District. During the week of February 13th-17th, elementary students used sticky notes to spread messages of joy. The movement was started in 2014 by a Canadian teenager after being the victim of cyberbullying. Instead of retaliating, she decided to spread cheer. Many schools have now adopted this action to support character education programs. At Unqua Elementary School, students drew

pictures or wrote positive phrases and uplifting quotes on the small pieces of paper. The notes were collected by Student Council members, who hung them up together to create the Positive Post-It Wall. Each grade received a different color to symbolize participation in the initiative from grades K-6. On Positive Post-It Day, students gave notes to each other to recognize friendships and celebrate acts of kindness. Everyone wrote a positive note for a classmate at

McKenna Elementary School. The notes with simple messages such as “Smile,” “Be Happy” and “Believe in Yourself” were placed on each student’s locker, so by the end of the week the hallways were lined with messages of encouragement. “You want to make people feel good, so they don’t give up on themselves,” said McKenna third-grader Jacob Ghaly. Added Unqua fifthgrader Nicholas Hinck, “This inspires people to be nice, so school is a good environment.”

Valuable Resource A clean environment is necessary to maintain safe drinking water, fourthgraders recently learned at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. The students worked with the North Shore Land Alliance Program to understand about the sources of Long Island’s drinking water. Through a two-day lesson, children learned about the aquifer

and its connection to the streams, bays and Long Island Sound. They found out how their activities can affect the quality and quantity of this precious resource. “It is particularly important that people understand the benefits of and timely need to preserve and protect our lands and waters,” said Karen Mossey, a representative from the program. “Without

natural, undeveloped areas, our community wouldn’t have the ability to recharge underground aquifers so critical to the quality and quantity of our drinking water.” This hands-on lesson, arranged by teacher Nicole Dizdar, integrated science into the fourth-grade social studies curriculum, which focuses on Long Island’s history and geography.

Eight High Schools Advance

Teen entrepreneurs from 72 local high schools competed in the seventh annual Long Island Virtual Enterprises (LI VE) Business Plan Competition. Ten of those teams will advance to the semi-finals next month. Student business leaders from across Long Island won the top spots during an event held at Farmingdale State College and move on to compete at semi-finals hosted by American Portfolios in Holbrook, next month. Each high school class was represented by a student team in the form of a business. Students at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District believe in second chances. That’s why they raised more than $2,000 to support an animal that needs a new lease on life. The Student Council held a fundraiser to benefit Milo the dog at the Long Island-based Second Chance Rescue. Milo, found injured and abandoned in

another state, was brought to the rescue group in need of special equipment as he learns to walk again. A reading teacher from Unqua, who volunteers with Second Chance, came up with the idea for the fundraiser. Student Council members, under the direction of advisers Leanne Leder and Deanna Musacchia, hung posters

around the school, created ﬂiers for their classmates to take home and made announcements encouraging donations. Students, teachers and staff collectively raised $2,125 for the cause. “It was pretty amazing to see the empathy that the students had for an animal,” Ms. Leder said. “The entire school contributed to this effort.”

World Read Aloud Day our students to develop a love for the written word.” Other guest readers included Assistants to the Superintendent Diana Haanraadts, Jean Castelli and Michael Gargiulo, Principal Stephen Scarallo, Assistant Principal Ryan Aliperti, ELA Curriculum Associate Mary O’Meara and special area teachers. Students got to Skype with a pair of authors. In the all-purpose room, second-graders took part in a videoconference with Stacy McNulty, who has written both picture and chapter books. She discussed the writing process and how she gets ideas for her stories. Fifth- and sixth-grade classes participated in a video chat with Carmella Van Vleet who spoke about her book “Eliza Bing is (Not) a Big, Fat Quitter,” a story about a girl with ADHD who, despite her

challenges, “can do cool things.” The book is based on her daughter, and students cheered when the “real Eliza” joined the chat. Children and adults across the globe recently shared an appreciation for literacy including those at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. The school took part in World Read Aloud Day on February 16th. “Secret” readers visited classrooms to share books of their choice, including Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis who read Kobi Yamada’s “What Do You Do With an Idea?” to Trish Brackman’s kindergartners. She signed the book and gifted it to the class. “It was an absolute joy to be back in the classroom to share a book with children that will hopefully inspire them to cultivate and contribute their ideas,” said Ms. Iconis, a former elementary school teacher. “Reading and writing are lifelong skills, and we want
