Love for Learning Valentine’s Day served as the perfect opportunity for students to improve their literacy and math skills at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Children took part in a variety of activities that centered on the holiday on February 14th. Math teacher Nicole Gatto worked with third-

graders on division. The students colored in sections of a “mystery picture” based on the answers, and revealed a heart with an arrow. In Jeanne Genovese’s first-grade class, children had pictures of objects such as flowers, pencils and people, and had to measure the size of each using candy hearts, then

recorded their findings. Second-grade teacher Donna Crowley had her students make heart puzzles about books they just read. Each section of the heart was a different question about it such as “Who is the story about?” and “What lesson is the author giving me?”

Landmarks Come to Life Fourth-graders are taking a digital approach to storytelling at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Working in pairs, they created multimedia presentations highlighting famous landmarks. With assistance from librarian Sandra Dorfman, students used

Chromebooks to research well-known places from around the world including Mount Rushmore, Big Ben, the Statue of Liberty and the Great Wall of China. Each group made a digital collage of pictures, then added music. Through narration, the students gave facts about their respective place, such as

its location, its age, its purpose, what it is made out of and who designed it. Once finished, the students will share their presentations with their classmates on the Smartboard. They will then complete a Makerspace activity to construct their landmark out of Legos.

And just like that, the snow has melted and signs of spring have begun to sprout here and there, signaling the end of hibernation and the beginning of so many wonderful things in this second season of the year. Of course, we are not completely out of the frozen woods yet; but it certainly is nice to feel the warmth of the sun in the month of February nonetheless. Last year, March brought with it a robin’s nest, complete with four perfect blue eggs, to my grandparents’ house. I often wonder if one of the babies will return this spring to lay its own batch of eggs and continue the line of fuzzy birds born in that backyard. So many wonderful memories took place in that very spot… how fitting that new life

should be born there as well. I recently picked up a bunch of tulips and roses while shopping, deciding that the post-holiday season barrenness of my apartment could use a little splash of color to liven things up. It’s amazing what a bowl of flowers can do to improve the atmosphere of a room… how I do love to snip and arrange fresh blooms in vases on occasion. It’s times like these that I wish I had a real garden of my own to tend; but alas, decks are really only conducive to the standard potted plant. I am certainly looking forward to heading out this spring and exploring the beaches and parks of Long Island as they come back to life. Aside from the exercise these random, meandering strolls encourage, they

also give me the alwayswelcome opportunity to continue to explore my love of photography. It doesn’t matter how many times I have visited a particular place; there is always a new angle to be found, another pretty sight to document. In about a month’s time, my hope is to have my new website up and ready to launch, featuring some of these scenic snapshots from the last several years, perhaps with some prints and calendars available for purchase. The premise was one of hundreds available from Breakout EDU, which provides the kits. Clues were hidden around the room, and students worked

in groups to decipher codes, such has having to use candy hearts to figure out a three-digit number. The activity promoted problem-solving skills while fostering communication and collaboration. “Without teamwork, it might have been impossible,” said sixthgrader Bella Chidichimo after she and her classmates “escaped.”

Many praise the people do sing, Speaking of summer, fall and spring. Why do we neglect Father Winter’s charm While crackling fires keep us warm? The pre-school children have been learning about their local community. To bring the learning to life, Suffolk Country Police Officers and an NYPD Sergeant visited Grace Early Childhood Center students. They all spoke about the vital role the police play in helping and

supporting the community. The children listened intently to the officers’ explanations about the many ways in which the police help all people, including animals and our pets! The real fun began when the children were given a tour of the police car. Sergeant Greg of the

NYPD Emergency Service Unit shared his water rescue equipment. The kids even tried on several of his helmets! Thank you Connor and Jackson for introducing us to your uncle and dad. Thank you officers for visiting Grace, and thank you all for your service.

The art teachers say this is an opportunity for students to expand their skills by painting on a larger scale and on a surface they aren’t used to. Each mural takes a few sessions to complete. Each painting also includes a quote from the respective book in black letters. The stories depicted, such as “Winnie the Pooh” and “Charlotte’s Web,” were chosen in consultation with the first-

and second-grade teachers. There will be 10 paintings completed by the end of the year. “I like this,” said sixthgrader Casey Jackson. “We get to leave our mark on the school. People will always remember who did this.” Principal Stephen Aspetti added that the purpose of this mural project is to beautify the school and promote positive energy in the building. He said the goal is to add paintings to each hallway over the next few years.

The new Mural Club at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District is transforming the building with its colorful paintings. The after-school group’s mission this year is to paint storybook characters throughout the first- and second-grade hallway. The fifth- and sixth-grade students have been hard at work since November, under the direction of art teachers Melinda Wolfe and Nicole Hassell. First, the drawings are sketched on the walls in pencil, and traced over in black marker. The students
