Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island, in partnership with the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island, is collecting used bicycles and sewing machines on Saturday, April 1st (rain or shine) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Ethical Society, 38 Old Country Road in Garden City (at the western end of Old Country Road, next to the water tower). Items collected will be refurbished by the international project Pedals for Progress & Sewing Peace and sent to developing communities overseas. Anyone with an adult or child’s bicycle in repairable condition or a working portable sewing machine is urged to donate the item. The program does not accept “bikes for parts,” disassembled bikes or tricycles. It costs $40 to collect, process, ship, rebuild and
distribute each bicycle. A donation toward shipping costs is necessary (suggested minimum $10 per item). All cash and material donations are fully deductible and a receipt will be provided on site. This is the 14th bike/ sewing machine collection organized by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island and the second time it has been cosponsored by the Ethical Society. Huntington resident Kathy WilliamsGing was the first to suggest a bicycle collection to the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island. She learned of Pedals for Progress from a friend in New Jersey. Kathy says:” I lived in Peru as a Peace Corps volunteer for two years in 1971 and 1972 without a vehicle. I learned first hand what it was like to depend on public transportation
all of the time. Having a bicycle makes life easier in many ways: getting to work or school, going to the market or reaching the clinic.” Since beginning this collection, RPCV of LI has collected 1294 bicycles and 100 sewing machines. Floral Park’s Alison Pratt, who is the coordinator of the drive at the Ethical Society in Garden City, says the collection is an expression of the values of the Ethical Society to do what we can to help people to live their best lives. “Donating a used bike or idle sewing machine is an easy way to make a huge difference in the life of someone who doesn’t have the resources we do,” she says. Pedals for Progress collects bicycles and sewing machines annually and transfers this material

A local food pantry will benefit from the generosity of students at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District who participated in the school’s Souper Bowl. The drive was organized by Chief’s Challenge, a character education club under the direction of advisers Marisa Boulukos and Caroline Glynn. In the week leading up to the Super Bowl,
students were asked to donate canned goods to benefit the Massapequabased Yes Community Counseling Center, which maintains a food pantry. Announcements were made throughout the week with statistics about hunger on Long Island. Students could make their donation based on their favored team, as two large boxes were placed in the lobby with each
decorated for one of the two opponents in the big game - the Atlanta Falcons and the New England Patriots. They were encouraged to wear a sports jersey to school on the final day of the drive. “It was important to support a local organization,” Ms. Boulukos said. “This is the time of the year when food pantries start to get a little low after the holidays.”

Snow Days & Days Gone By By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Ah, snow days. Time was, they were a rare occasion to be looked forward to, an excuse to be carefree and cozy and free of all obligation. No more. Now, they are fraught with angst over the prospect of shoveling out, navigating the treacherous roadways and – somehow – making up for the time lost, whether at work, school or elsewhere. Oh, to be a child again… Speaking of the younger generation, as I was moving mound after mound of heavy, wet snow to the curbside in my apartment complex this past week, one of my neighbors remarked how “back in the day” it was common to see the local middle and high school boys clamoring to shovel out their neighbors’ driveways, usually for a quite reasonable sum. They made a few extra dollars, the elderly and infirmed were spared the agony of backbreaking labor, and all was well with the world.
“Nowadays,” he said, “you’ll be lucky to get them to look up from their phone for a minute.” Which brings me to my next point – when, exactly, did it become a requirement for every child from the age of four on up to have their own cell phone? I understand the practical purposes it serves in case of emergencies and all; but you can’t tell me that sending a child to school with a phone is not a distraction waiting to happen. Back in my day (all 17 years ago) we brought quarters for the pay phone. And, if by chance we were low on change, we asked to go to the Main Office, where they were more than happy to let us call home for a ride. My, how times have changed. It’s funny how we tend to lose the perspective of exactly how much time has elapsed between certain milestones in life. When someone says “ten years ago,” I immediately assume they’re referring to the 1990’s, when in fact that decade is now ancient history by comparison. It seems
that once the new millennium began, all relatable historical markers were left in the past, and with them some of the most vivid memories of days gone by. How innocent those days seem now, by comparison. Of course, the passing years have brought with them many wonderful innovations and improvements; but we seemed to manage just fine at the time, before it even occurred to our imaginations to dream such concepts. We may not have had cell phones back in school, but we knew how to make snow angels and snowmen, and we knew how to enjoy an unexpected day off much better than our adult selves seem to now. And with that, my shoveling – and my work – is done for the day. It’s on to baking chocolate chip cookies and sipping hot cocoa while catching up on some reading for me. Who says a little nostalgia isn’t good for the soul? Happy Winter to all.

Klondike Derby
Troop 776 competed in its first Klondike Derby in many years. The event was hosted by the Shelter Rock District Order of the Arrow Matinecock Chapter on January 28th, 2017 at the Muttontown preserve. The boys labored for weeks building the sled for the race. The scouts and the leaders learned so much. Fun was had by all! The event was a great experience in team and skill building. A Klondike derby is an annual event held by some Boy Scouts of America districts during the winter months and is based on the heritage of the Klondike Gold Rush. BSA units have been running Klondike derbies since 1949. The derby involves the building of a sledge. Sledges must be built by the scouts. It is not
essential to have snow for this event; in fact, many of the best Klondike Derbies are held without snow. Each “dog team” (so called because 4 to 8 Scouts act as Huskies) acts as a separate expedition, following a course outlined on a map given to it. The map guides the team over a field course to simulated “cities.” Each “sledge driver” (Patrol Leader) is handed sealed orders at the starting line which contain the patrol’s instructions for reaching its final destination, the “North Pole.” Teams are checked for readiness, equipment, etc., are lined up at the starting line and, at the roar of the starting signal, are away toward the trail. Each team opens its sealed orders containing course directions and map. Each
team takes its bearings and then starts off for a specific first city as shown on the map. A practical problem involving basic Scouting skills will be encountered at each city. Depending on how well the team works out the problem and the teamwork displayed, it will be awarded a number of gold nuggets, have its scorecard marked, and be off to the next city. After the last city, the team is on the final stretch to the North Pole. After raising the patrol flag at the North Pole and receiving nuggets, the Patrol Leader will check in at the Assayer’s Office, where the finish time will be marked, the nuggets will be counted, and the score will be tallied. Awards are presented accordingly.

Jessica Pianese, Samara Podmore and Bobby Simon had their designs chosen, which can be placed on youth and adult T-shirts, long-sleeve shirts and hooded sweatshirts and ordered online. Ms. Schneider said that this project taught the students how to think like graphic designers, as they had to use marketing skills to create designs that would appeal to consumers. The students were
also limited to three colors. This is the second year she has done the project with students and this is a unique fundraiser to protect the manatees. Last year’s designs led to several hundred T-shirt sales, and she is looking to eclipse that total this year. “I always like to do something that gives back,” Ms. Schneider said. “I think that’s important. Look at the good that a drawing can do.”

Seven students from Massapequa High School’s chapter of the Distributive Education Clubs of America have advanced to the state level after placing at the Nassau County regional championship. Lincoln Clark and Gage Lamfers placed in the sales demonstration category. They each had to create a product and associated marketing tools, and make
emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. Massapequa’s winners, under adviser Edward Aromando, will compete against students from across New York at the state championship in Rochester from March 7th10th.

3D Printing Three-dimensional printing is creating excitement at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, where students have quickly taken to the new technology. The 3-D printer is housed in the school’s Makerspace lab, which is part of the library. Students in fourth through sixth grades have begun 3-D printing activities under the direction of librarian Tara
Gonzalez and computer teacher assistant Donna Meyer. They have created small projects such as hashtag words and small objects using the program Tinkercad. Before they send their item to the printer, which has several choices of colors to use, students must look at their design on the computer from all angles to make sure all dimensions are correct. Working in groups, they
must cooperate and collaborate to settle on an idea. “I just think it’s cool to be able to design things on the computer and print them out and make them real,” said fifth-grader Luke Raymond. While many of the students have heard of 3-D, this is the first time they are experiencing it for themselves.

A No Brainer tobacco, alcohol, opioids and illegal drugs, and how those substances can stop or slow the development of the brain. “We wanted the students to realize the long-term effects that drugs can have,” said Denise Baldinger, the district’s health education chairwoman. “A good time can turn into damage that can last a lifetime.” Peggy O’Connell, of Massapequa Takes Action Coalition, visited health
classes throughout the day to discuss the concept of community mapping. She spoke of MTA’s efforts to identify places in Massapequa where drug sales or use may be occurring. She sought input from students about these spots, as well as areas they identify as “safe spaces.” “It’s a community effort to help combat the drug problem,” added Ms. Baldinger.

Doing Their Part Many students at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus have pets, which is why they are doing their part to help animals that have not yet found a permanent home. The school is hosting a blanket and towel drive through February 10th
for a nonprofit dog rescue organization, Redemption Rescues, Inc. This is the second year the school has partnered with the organization, which specializes in pitbulls. The items collected will go to the families that are fostering the dogs, as they
await adoption. Members of the Student Council have assisted in the Valentine’s Day-themed collection by decorating the collection box and making fliers to promote the drive. The project is led by computer monitor Patty Carroll.
