An Ode to Driving on LI I’m willing to go out on a limb to say that even those who would count winter as their favorite season do not enjoy driving in the snow and icy conditions it brings, especially if they live on Long Island. Just the other morning, after a surprise helping of the white stuff, I was reminded of the joys of a morning commute in about six inches of slush… The privilege of driving behind those with an aversion to cleaning off their rooftops and back windows… The honor of inching behind drivers who seem to think that to surpass 20 mph would be criminal… The thrill of testing out my brakes every car length or so, as people ahead come to a screeching halt due to…what, exactly? I couldn’t tell you.

Sure, I understand the anxiety which can come from being forced to travel in such conditions – to a degree. But when a few select drivers and their inability to, you know, drive are the cause? Well, that’s where I lose patience. I’m pretty sure they teach this stuff in driver’s ed, in defensive driving courses – or in the big old handbook known as common sense. It’s not rocket science people. #1. You need to see the road, so clean windows and mirrors are a must. #2. The rest of us need to see the road as well, so having an 18-inch clump of snow fly off the back of someone’s car into your windshield… not the most conducive to aforementioned point. #3. Brakes do not respond well on wet pavement, snow or ice – so it is best to

refrain from slamming on them for no good reason. Simply letting up on the gas pedal and, oh yes, steering can work wonders. These are just a few of the more important points I encountered on my journey to work, on a 20-mile straight stretch of road with no fewer than a dozen or so drivers wreaking havoc. We’ve been fortunate this winter, but that’s not to say we have been – or will be – spared completely. A few more morning or evening rush hours like that, and we’ll all be counting down the days to spring. pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. The program is eight weeks in length with the exception of Sunday classes which are prorated for seven weeks. All classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $175. The Learn to Skate schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to Noon, Saturdays from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. and Sundays from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. There will be no classes on Sunday, March 27th in observance of Easter Sunday. Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for new members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon

mastering of each level. There will also be an evaluation on week seven with a recommendation for the next series. There will be no refunds or makeups and skate rental is not included in price. Helmets, gloves or mittens and warm layers are recommended for all skaters. The Rinx Skating School staff is made up of experienced and qualified professionals, governed by US Figure Skating, USA Hockey and Professional Skaters Association. These professionals teach skaters the fundamentals of ice skating while also placing a major emphasis on having fun. Snowman Lesson Lockhart Elementary School second-graders learned the states of matter: solid, liquid, gas, with a little help from a frosty friend. Each secondgrade class was given a real snowman that melted away throughout the day in the classroom. Students made observations, measured

the water, and made predictions as to what they thought would happen. Some students really enjoyed watching the snowman change and were sad to see him go! Others were excited to write descriptive sentences as he melted before their eyes while another class of students

wanted to personalize their snowman, calling him Snow Dude! Lockhart second-grade teachers Katelyn Mulvey, Meredith O’Pasek and Debbie Cirella said, “The use of snowmen was a fun, relatable and memorable way of delivering this science lesson to students.”

Winter Photos Welcome Residents are invited to send in their photos for consideration for use in a Town publication. According to Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson, the current winter season presents many opportunities for photos to be taken. Many Town publications, including the recently mailed 2016 Town Calendar, feature great photos submitted by our residents. Anybody who has taken photos depicting people or places within the Town of Oyster Bay is invited to submit those photos for potential use in upcoming Town publications. The Town accepts photos throughout the year for use in various Town publications. Seasonal photos are especially encouraged, as they are used on the Town’s website and also considered for the following year’s Town

calendar, which is mailed to all residents. The Councilwoman went on to say that photos must be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but professionally developed photos, not inkjet printouts, may also be submitted. E-mailed photos, preferably in a jpeg format, should be sent to the Town’s Public Information Office at m k a n e @ o y s t e r b a y - n y. gov. Printed photographs should be mailed to Oyster Bay Town Hall, Attention Public Information Office, Calendar Photo Submissions, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Entrants will be notified if their photos are selected for the calendar. Residents should make sure their name, address, phone number and photo description accompany the photograph. Do not write

in ink on the back of the picture. The photographer is responsible for the correct spelling of the names of the subjects in the photos, as well as notifying subjects that their picture may appear in a Town of Oyster Bay calendar or other Town material. You may be asked to supply a waiver if your photo is selected. The Town of Oyster Bay is a photographer’s dream, and the remainder of winter provides many opportunities to take beautiful pictures. In addition to our many parks and beaches, the Town of Oyster Bay boasts a wealth of historic sites, museums and other places of interest that could be the subject of a great photo. AWARDS BANQUET - The Massapequa Mustang 2015 Awards Banquet was recently held at the Memorare Knights of Columbus in Seaford. The Massapequa Mustangs are a nonprofit youth football organization that was founded in 1958. Those involved within the Mustangs strive to keep the legacy of this proud youth football and cheerleading organization alive and strong.

START YOUR ENGINES - Pack 776 hosted its annual Cub Scout Pinewood Derby on Friday, January 29th. The scouts are given a block of wood and have to design, paint and name their car. Jack Riley, a Webelos Scout, took 1st place with his “Highway” car! The winners of each rank will go on to race in the district derby on April 2nd. The boys did a fantastic job creating their cars and cheering their peers on. A great night was had by all.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The ceremony, held at North Shore University Hospital’s Rust Auditorium, was simulcast to other Northwell facilities across the New York/ metro area. This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, president of UMBC (The University of Maryland, Baltimore County) and a child

leader in the civil rights movement, who was featured in Spike Lee’s 1997 documentary, Four Little Girls, the story of the 1963 bombing of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church. His presentation focused on the importance of inspiring young people to take action. Dr. Hrabowski spoke to students who had been invited to the event saying: “Each of us ifthe product of our childhood experiences. Think of it…what you do right now could determine

what you do in the future.” He then recounted his memories of hearing Dr. King speak for the first time as a 12 year-old boy in Birmingham. Following the tragic bombing at the 16th Street Church, he said he was determined to join other young students in a peaceful march through the streets of Birmingham. But first, he sought his parents’ permission to march. “At first, they were against it. But the next day, my father gave his

permission,” Dr. Hrabowski said. “They told me they prayed about it, but in the end, they supported me.” That support from family and community is a cornerstone of his concept of empowering young people “On a day when we celebrate the achievements of Dr. King,” he said, “I would encourage our young people to dream big. Dream about the possibilities… decide what you want to do in life. And then, think

about what it takes to reach that dream. What I took away from the [civil rights] movement was the importance of dreaming about the possibilities,” he said. “Children have an enormous capacity to think and act. That’s what we want parents and teachers to remember.” A noted researcher and author, Dr. Hrabowski’s research and publications focus on science and math education, with emphasis on minority participation and performance. He

was recently named by President Obama to chair the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans. His latest book is Holding Fast to Dreams: Empowering Youth from the Civil Rights Crusade to STEM Achievement. CRAFTSMAN BADGE COMPLETED - Webelos II from Pack 776 completed their craftsman badge Saturday, January 30th at Central Tile. Mr. Pat Antonacci was kind enough to donate his knowledge, time, materials and the use of his store to teach the boys how to set and grout tile.
