Johnson announced. “The Talent Competition is open to all students from Kindergarten through 12th grade who reside in or attend school within the Town of Oyster Bay. The “Learn to Skate” program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. The program is for eight weeks with the exception of Sundays. She cited an example in which a Massapequa High School junior did just that after hearing one of the speakers in December, and it may have saved a person’s life. The student spoke with their aunt, who at South Bay's then completed a selfexamination and found a Neighbor Newspaper lump. New Supervisor

Supervisor Saladino noted he will spend the coming weeks and months working on outlining his goals for the new Town administration. “I will work to gain the faith and trust of our residents, by providing transparency and improving efficiency, as well as looking to provide affordability and fiscal integrity.” In his new role, the Supervisor will use his over 30 years of experience as a government administrator, including the last 13 serving as an Assemblyman, during which time he pushed for government reform, tax reduction, and consolidation of state government. During his years in the Assembly, Supervisor Saladino worked to deliver on-time state budgets, bring ethics reform, cut spending and worked to eliminate a

$10 billion deficit in the State budget. Additionally, Supervisor Saladino is known throughout the State for leading the charge to remediate the Grumman Navy Plume to clean up the contaminants in Long Island’s drinking water. “We will save money. We will make Town government live within its means, while continuing to deliver top notch municipal services, the kind of services Town of Oyster Bay residents have come to expect,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Working together, we can move Oyster Bay in a new direction and build a proud future, a future built on the foundation of the highest standard of ethics, strong hands-on management and rock solid fiscal practices. Team Approach Recent enhancement efforts at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District celebrate the building’s past and present. The Shared Decision Making Team, made up of administrators, teachers, support staff, students and parents, recommended a series of embellishments to beautify the building and make it easier to navigate. In keeping with the color scheme of the Massapequa Chiefs, the third-floor hallway has been painted gold and the second-floor hallway has been painted blue. On the first floor, the Mural Club will continue its tradition of having all eighth-graders add their handprints and names to the wall. Over the last three years, this has slowly created a rainbow throughout the hallway. “It is a really great way to honor the students who leave Berner,” said art teacher and Mural Club

adviser Paul Leone. “It is something the students look forward to creating. The visual presentation in the corridor is also quite beautiful, seeing the colors transition from one end of the hallway down to the other.” The stairways in the classroom wing have all been color coded. Of the two center staircases, one is now red and the other white, paying tribute to when Berner was a high school. In homage to the school’s location, the north staircase is yellow for the sun and named for Sunrise Highway, and the south staircase is blue for the water and named for Merrick Road. New blue and gold signs have been added above the doors to label classrooms and offices, and are easily visible as students walk down the halls. Directional signs leading to the gymnasium, cafeteria, auditorium and other key

places have been added around the building. Hallways have been named based on character traits, such as Respect Road, Success Street and Teamwork Way, or with Massapequa-themed names such as Chiefs Court, Bison Drive and A.G. Berner Boulevard. The Shared Decision Making Team meets once a month to come up with ideas to improve the culture of the building. The members also pick the annual reading selection for Berner’s “One School, One Book” initiative. “We work with the community, the students and the staff to improve the school,” said Executive Assistant to the Principal Theresa Donohue, who heads the committee. “We try to make Berner a better place based on everyone’s feedback. We truly come together as a team.”

Too Good for Drugs Elementary school students in the Massapequa School District are learning how to make good choices through the Too Good for Drugs program. School social workers meet with third- through fifth-grade classes once a week for 10 weeks. Too Good for Drugs is

a preventative program, according to Donna Gordonson, the social worker at Fairfield Elementary School. She said the children learn how to make smart decisions, how to set goals and how to successfully deal with peer pressure. The students meet

Auto the Robot and learn that unlike Auto, they can think for themselves. When the program ends, the students keep their completed workbooks and are encouraged to discuss the lessons at home with their parents.

Knowing His Geography Lucas Santangelo, an eighth-grader at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, displayed how much he knows about the world when he was crowned the winner of the schoolwide National Geographic Bee on January 25th. The honor gives him the opportunity to qualify for the state level and, if successful, advance to the national level. Seventh-grader Colin Alonso was the runnerup. Ten other students

participated in the competition, including eighth-graders Julia Cornell, Emily Fiola, Jack Muscatello, Sean Sartory and Aryon Seraji, and seventh-graders Conor Burns, Emilie Huyler, Michael Jantz, Ashley Jew and Frank Rinaudo. All students took a qualifying assessment to determine a winner for each team. These winners then participated in the school bee which included oral and written formats, in which students answered

questions in rounds. “The bee is a wonderful platform for students to hone their skills, build confidence and reinforce their interest in geography,” said social studies teacher Danielle Kennedy, who coordinated the bee with the assistance of social studies teachers William Chlystun and Josee Charvet. “We are very proud of Lucas and all the students who challenged themselves by participating in this event.”

From Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Walt Disney, fifth-graders in Matthew Cunha’s class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District wrote about people who made a difference in the world. For their biography projects, students were asked to select a person, living or dead, who they found to be inspirational.

Three eighth-graders from Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District were winners in a poster contest to promote the upcoming World Language Festival. Devin DiMascio received first place. Her poster featured two silhouettes of people, along with drawings of the countries representing the six languages that are taught in Massapequa - French, German, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, Italian and American Sign

Language. “I hope to get people to come to the festival,” she said. “Breaking down barriers and communicating with people who don’t speak the same language as you, is an important thing.” Isabel Feliciano won second place. Her poster featured a picture of the globe and a notable piece of architecture from countries representing the six languages. Third-place winner Mia Tichacek also included a drawing of the

world along with three people holding hands and one word from each language. The winning posters will be displayed at the festival on March 22nd, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Massapequa High School. The event will include activities in classrooms, an international food court and cultural performances. Other entries in the poster contests will be hung throughout the elementary schools to promote the event.

teach our students about our veterans who selflessly and honorably served our country to protect our freedom,” said Assistant Principal Bryan Piotrowski. “This activity serves as a great opportunity to allow our students to thank them for their service, sacrifice and commitment

I ended last week’s column hoping that this month of February would bring with it a little more sunshine into all of our lives… While this is a nice sentiment, of course we know that life does not always work this way, and there are plenty of storm clouds to weather along the way. This just reinforces the notion that we must all take the time to appreciate the little things in life, the special moments, those people we love and the many memories we share, as we simply never know when they will become precisely that… just a faded memory among many others. After the passing of my grandfather nearly a year ago, and the subsequent sale of the

house that my grandparents had called home for more than 50 years, there was obviously much cleaning out and sorting through mementos to be done. In some ways, this was the most difficult task of all. To me, nearly everything held some sort of significance, some deep emotional attachment which evoked so many precious recollections of years gone by. Of course, these are just objects, material possessions which hardly make up for the loss of the person they are associated with. But the photographs… those are truly special. And boy, are there photographs. I, being of the slightly OCD nature, coupled with my fervent love of all things photography, volunteered to take on the initial task

of sorting through and cataloging the boxes upon boxes of albums, envelopes full of developed photos and a few dozen or so frames and collages. Several months later, I’ve barely made a dent in the process. But it doesn’t matter. There’s no rush where memories are concerned. They should be carefully recollected, and savored. Every single photograph tells a story; and every story unlocks a treasure trove of feelings and emotions – some happy, some sad, some wistful… all meaningful in their own respective ways. And winter, while it may not bring a lot of sunshine into our lives, is the perfect time to take a moment to appreciate all the memories that do.

Macagnone. “Through the years, the Distinguished Artists concert series has become one of the most popular programs offered by the Town of Oyster Bay,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “Admission to each performance is free and each concert provides residents with the opportunity to witness
