The technique is based on drawing a series of repetitive patterns, which fosters a calming, relaxed state that helps clear the mind. Legendary musician and Long Island native, Billy Joel will speak with students at the Hillwood Recital Hall in Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at LIU Post, on February 8th, 2016, for an “Afternoon of Questions & Answers… And a Little Music” to raise awareness of the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) and encourage enrollment. The students will come from both LIHSA, the only public high school arts program that serves students from across Long Island, and Long Island University. Other attendees will include superintendents and prospective students. Joel, a strong supporter of the arts in public schools, wrote a letter in November 2015 to the Nassau BOCES Board expressing his support for LIHSA’s continuation. The Syosset-based arts program is funded by student tuition from public school districts. Enrollments have been declining for the last

In addition to honing their design skills, the project taught students to work together, to build relationships, and to communicate effectively in front of a large group, giving them a foundation to present their work in the future. The lesson was also part of their preparations

for the end-of-year fashion show, held in May. “I saw this activity on Project Runway and I just had to do it with the class,” said Fashion Design Technology Teacher Belle Cheverino. “The students have a lot of interaction with each other through this project. They ask each other’s opinions and they become very close. And, just as importantly, it’s a lot of fun!”

There was another door in front of me. I walked through the door, touching a dry, old, rusty doorknob. I looked to the left and saw two desks and at least 100 pairs

We tried on a green pair that I looked stupid in, a red pair that I liked the best, and heavy, vomit-worthy blue ones that had holes in the rims that kept the glasses on my face. The holes must have been there to catch a new fashion trend, but the only thing it was catching was strands of my hair. “I like these!” the nasty lady and Mom said. Moments after, we walked out with me wearing the blue glasses. I guess all stories don’t have happy endings.

And so it begins. February, the month of anticipation, from furry groundhogs predicting the forecast to expressions of love and affection come Valentine’s Day. Is there anyone who isn’t even the slightest bit glad to bid January farewell? Apologies, once again, to anyone with birthdays, anniversaries and other notable milestones during this first month of the new year, the symbolic representation of all things new and fresh. With the possible exception of the few moments of New Year’s Eve celebrations which spilled over into the next morning, I have to

say that, for me, 2016 is severely lacking in positive spin. Sure, winter has spared us its wrath for the most part…save for one tiny twofoot helping of the white stuff. Still, the bitter cold and gray, overcast skies leave something to be desired. There is only so much hibernating and vegetating one can realistically do. (Netflix, anyone?) But here we are, turning the page – on the calendar and hopefully on life – as month two begins, providing us with yet another blank canvas to fill. Here’s to getting back to doing those things which make us happy, to not allowing the negativity of other individuals and situations dictate our moods, to rising above the monotony in search of fulfillment.

Here’s to hoping that February provides the perfect precursor to spring, and all the beauty and wonderment it brings. Plus, we have an extra day to take advantage of this year, a bonus opportunity if ever there was one. Now all we have to do is make use of it, and of all those clichéd philosophies we want so badly to believe in. Whatever it is you are hoping for, may you have the courage to go after it. Good things come to those who wait; but a pointed step in the right direction surely doesn’t hurt. Here’s to February, to frosted windowpanes and picturesque winter sunsets and the beginnings of revitalization. Oh, and of course Buddy the Betta’s 1st birthday. Priorities humans, priorities.
