Congratulations to Massapequa Middle School Student Gabriella Heimbauer, who has been selected to participate in the USA National HP Volleyball program. Gabriella, who is 13 years old, is ranked among the top 8 middle hitters in the country in her age category (Select A1). The primary mission of the USA Volleyball HP program is to identify, train, and provide competitive experiences for potential future USA Volleyball Olympians. Athletes are chosen across four age categories based on results from tryouts held across the Country. Training for this particular group took place during the December 2015 holiday break in Anaheim California at the home of the U.S.A. Womens Olympic Volleyball Training Facility, under the leadership of Karch Kiraly. Coach Kiraly has won Olympic gold medals in both beach and indoor volleyball categories, and honored as the greatest volleyball player of the 20th Century. In 2012 Kiraly was named head coach of the US National Women’s Volleyball team to try to compete in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Growing up in a “volleyball family”, Gabriella has always enjoyed the sport and currently plays with her older sister Adriana. She plays for Massapequa High School Varsity Volleyball Team since 7th grade, and The Island Volleyball Academy club team. Gabriella also enjoys the same passion for basketball and plays for

the MHS varsity team since 7th grade and Long Island Lightening club team. She plans on trying out for U.S.A. basketball team when she is age eligible in

High school seniors looking to pursue an education in the performing, visual, or literary arts will be pleased to learn that registration for the annual Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council Scholarship Competition is currently underway. The Arts Council Scholarship Competition encourages high school seniors to submit work in categories such as music, dance, visual arts and literary arts for the chance to be

awarded a scholarship. The Arts Council’s annual Scholarship Competition is open to all high school seniors who reside in or attend school in the Town of Oyster Bay. The students participated in a variety of workshops including chorus, musical theatre and drumming. The day culminated in a demonstration of what the children learned in their workshops. SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER - Susan M. Martin, President of the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce, recently met with students from Ms. Marianne Conte’s Marketing and Entrepreneurship classes at Massapequa High School. Ms. Martin explained the Chamber’s purpose in the community and discussed relevant issues faced by local businesses. Ms. Martin was highly impressed by the enthusiasm and insight demonstrated by the students, and emphasized that it was a pleasure speaking with Massapequa’s future entrepreneurs.

Hispanic Scholar

Known by his teachers and peers as a highly intelligent, highly motivated student, David is enrolled in the most academically stimulating courses offered at Massapequa High School and has consistently excelled at the top of his class. He was named a semi-finalist in the College Board’s National Merit Scholarship Program and will find out in the spring if he is a finalist in the competition. With a passion for writing and social studies, he has penned many thought-provoking pieces for the award-winning high school newspaper “The Chief,” which examine societal issues such as those relating to drug abuse or racism. David enjoys studying foreign languages and plans to attend the University of Chicago in the fall to major in East Asian Languages

and Civilizations. He studied Japanese there over the summer and currently takes Advanced Placement (AP) French. He hopes to combine his interests into a career in either political journalism or international affairs. Also a gifted piano player who has won several awards and honors for his talent, David is involved in an endeavor called Piano for Patients, which performs classical and jazz piano for residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities. “David is an incredibly well-rounded individual who not only excels academically, socially and musically, but is constantly striving to improve and grow,” said Massapequa High School Principal Dr. Barbara Williams. “He is a true role model for his class and we are delighted that he was chosen for this this well-deserved honor.”

College Hockey Challenge The Town of Oyster Bay will host its annual College Hockey Challenge on Saturday, January 23rd. The University of Albany Great Danes will take on the Farmingdale State University Rams in a Men’s Ice Hockey game, with the winner receiving the prestigious Supervisor’s Cup Trophy. The event will be held at the stateof-the-art Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage beginning at 7:30 p.m. This game will showcase some of the best talent in the area. In addition to seeing some top tier

action on the ice, Town of Oyster Bay Youth Hockey program players will be given a chances to take part in free pre-game on-ice youth clinics prior to the game. These unique clinics will help participating youngsters hone their ice hockey skills, gaining valuable tips and insights from some of the areas most accomplished players. Admission is free but residents are encouraged to help others by donating two canned goods, which will be collected at the event by Island Harvest as part of Hockey Fights
