While this academic year might look a little different from previous years, there are still many ways to save on the essentials your family needs. To get ready, check out the savings and organizational tips below from the discount experts at Dollar General.

In the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, many schools hastily transitioned from traditional in-person learning to remote learning. This transition posed new and unique challenges to educators as well as students and their parents. One of the biggest challenges posed by remote learning was keeping students connected to their teachers and their classmates, not all of whom had readily available access to devices that could facilitate such connections. In recognition of that challenge, school systems worked to procure devices for students only to be confronted by another challenge: low bandwidth. According to Microsoft, bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be transferred over an internet connection per second. Low bandwidth can compromise students’ ability to stay connected to their virtual classrooms. In an effort to help

students overcome that challenge, Microsoft offers the following tips on how educators, students and parents can manage low bandwidth during remote learning sessions. • Reduce reliance on video during class sessions. Turning video cameras off during live class sessions can help to overcome the challenges posed by low bandwidth, as live video is a key contributor to excessive use of bandwidth. If video must be used, encourage students to turn off their cameras when they are not speaking. • Use pre-recorded content. Pre-recording content enables students to stream video over the internet, saving those with low bandwidth the hassle of downloading large video files to their computers. Microsoft recommends educators who prerecord content for their students to stream to instruct those students to use class time to complete assignments.

Educators can make themselves available via chat to answer questions students may have about their assignments. • Avoid video-based assignments. It can be difficult for students with low bandwidth to send very large files, such as videos. Educators can help students avoid that issue by not requiring them to submit videos as part of their assignments.

Each September 11, communities across the United States commemorate the lives lost during the 2001 terrorist attacks that took place on American soil. On September 11, 2001, four commercial airplanes were hijacked and sent to various targets in the United States. Two planes crashed into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, one plane crashed into the U.S. Pentagon Building near Washington, D.C., and a fourth plane was intercepted from the hijackers and crash-landed in rural Pennsylvania. In the immediate aftermath of the attacks, President George W. Bush declared Friday, September 14, 2001 as a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the terrorist attacks, but many people

felt there should be an annual event dedicated to preserving the memory of the victims and the heroism of the first responders. A bill to make September 11 a national day of mourning was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on October 25, 2001. The bill passed the Senate unanimously. On September 11, 2002, the country recognized the first Patriot Day. On this day, the U.S. flag is flown at halfmast. In addition, a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. is observed to correspond with the attacks. While not a federal holiday — schools and businesses remain open — memorial ceremonies are held for the 2,977 victims, including an annual reading of names of the people who lost their lives.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals: Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle. Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable. Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.

As like many other non-profit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. Keep Devices In Top Shape And Running Well The need for reliable technology has never been more apparent. When the world hit the proverbial pause button in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, technology was crucial to keeping people connected to the world around them, helping people maintain some semblance of normalcy as it pertained to work and education. Students and families who have invested in various electronics to help keep their household running should understand that maintenance is required to keep these devices running effectively. These tips can help keep gadgets in tip-top shape. • Protect devices from extreme temperatures. Electronic devices are

designed to operate under an array of conditions, but pushing those conditions can result in damage. Most devices are fine between temperatures of 32 F and 90 F. But don’t leave electronics in the car, in a sunny window or outdoors. devices • Clean regularly. Refer to the user’s manual for the proper ways to clean the devices you rely on each day. Security issues may arise when software is not updated, and programs may not run effectively or be compatible with others. Along the same vein, routinely clean out unused files to free up space, and clear cookies and browser histories to maintain speed and efficiency. Routine maintenance can keep electronics working properly when they’re needed the most.

‘LET THEM PLAY’ - Supervisor Joseph Saladino joins with Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Lou Imbroto, Councilwoman Laura Maier, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh, Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato, Assemblyman Michael Montesano, Assemblyman John Mikulin, County Legislator Rose Marie Walker, Hempstead Town Councilman Dennis Dunne, Massapequa School Board member Jeanine Caramore, local high school sports officials from throughout Nassau County, as well as dozens of student athletes, to call on county high school sports officials to allow them to play this fall season. Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with members of the Town Board and local elected officials, as well as dozens of supportive parents, sports officials and student athletes in calling for county high school sports officials to allow them to play this fall season. Earlier this week, Section VIII of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association voted to postpone high school sports in Nassau until 2021, while officials in Suffolk voted to move forward with their fall seasons. “This new school year will already be filled with many new variables for our students, and the inconsistency of these decisions only add to the already mounting frustration of parents and students alike as we embark on a new school year,” said Supervisor Saladino. “As students reenter their classrooms with celebration, they and their parents continue to search for a greater sense of normalcy in these uncertain times. Participating in sports activities brings that sense

of normalcy to so many of our young student athletes.” Supervisor Saladino added that many children have been playing these sports throughout their entire school careers, and that many high school athletes could potentially have their academic futures impacted if they are not permitted to participate in fall sports. He further stated that many sports organizations have safely returned to the field and that school sports officials could certainly put forward safety protocols to protect young players. “Sports has proven to be an essential component in the educational process, and in building leaders of tomorrow. It helps our youngsters learn concepts of sportsmanship and teamwork. These are lessons they take with them throughout the rest of their lives,” the Supervisor said. With much precedence available, officials pointed out that many sports activities have been permitted to resume, and have done so safely and efficiently. Councilwoman Michele

Johnson added, “As a parent, I can speak firsthand about the value of scholastic athletics. I can also speak firsthand about the tremendous job the school districts have undertaken since this pandemic began. We commend them for how they’ve successfully navigated these unchartered waters and offered students meaningful education and support under the most challenging of circumstances. We are confident they can get our players back on the field while protecting their health, safety and welfare. Councilwoman Laura Maier added, “These have obviously been unprecedented times, particularly for parents as they’ve balanced the educational and psychological needs of their children. Many of these children turn to athletics to help maintain that balance. The lessons learned on the field of determination, perseverance and the drive required to achieve success are all important components of future success.”

Curran Announces 19th Annual Remembrance And Recitation Ceremony For Victims Of 9/11 Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced that Nassau County will commemorate the 19th anniversary of the September 11 attacks with a Remembrance and Recitation of Names Ceremony on Thursday, September 10th, beginning at 4:30 pm at the 9/11 Memorial at Eisenhower Park. While all are invited to honor those lost inperson, due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns, residents are encouraged to attend this year’s ceremony virtually by watching live on the County’s website: N a s s a u c o u n t y n y. g o v / September11. During

the ceremony, access to the 9/11 Memorial will be prioritized for family members of the victims of the attacks, along with first responders who continue to make sacrifices to secure our freedom and safety. “The passing of time will not dim the memory of that day or weaken the spirit of our residents and heroic first responders,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “We will honor the bravery and heroism shown by our firstresponders and everyday people who stepped up during a time of crisis, while commemorating and reflecting on those we lost

and continue to lose.” The Remembrance Ceremony will include surviving family members reading of names of residents who lost their lives in the attacks. The 9/11 Memorial at Eisenhower Park features plaques inscribed with the names of the 348 Nassau County victims who lost their lives on that day, along with two semitransparent aluminum towers, representing the World Trade Center towers, and two pieces of steel recovered from the World Trade Center.

Town To Host 9/11 & Walls of Honor Remembrance Ceremony September 9th Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced that a Remembrance Ceremony for the victims of the September 11, 2001 Attacks on America will take place on Wednesday, September 9th at 7 p.m. at TOBAY Beach. A 9/11 Light Tribute will illuminate the skies along the shoreline in memory of those lost that tragic September morning. At the ceremony, the Town will unveil new names inscribed on to the Walls of Honor that recently lost their battle with 9/11 illness caused by exposure at Ground Zero. The September 9th ceremony includes bagpipe music

and religious readings. Supervisor Saladino stated, “To ensure the health and safety of attendees during this COVID pandemic, the Town of Oyster Bay’s 2020 September 11th Memorial and Walls of Honor Ceremony will hosted in a drive-in fashion, but offered with a new light tribute to those we lost that tragic morning. Every name on the September 11th Memorial and Walls of Honor will be read aloud as we understand how important the reading of the names is for the families and loved ones of those who perished both on September 11th and in the days since that fateful

day due to 9/11-related illnesses. All residents are welcome to join us in paying tribute to those we have lost.” The Town’s 9/11 Memorial - featuring a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center - is inscribed with the names of residents lost on September 11, 2001. The Walls of Honor monument expands each year with newly inscribed names of those who lost their battle with 9/11 illness caused by exposure at Ground Zero.
