March 2 would have been the 116th birthday of famed children’s author Dr. Seuss, but students and teachers at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District felt that a one-day celebration wasn’t enough. Instead, the school devoted an entire week to Dr. Seuss and the books that made him famous. It started off with “Cat in the Hat” day, as all students were encouraged to wear crazy hats. Teachers brought in their favorite books to share with their students. It was appropriate to wear silly or mismatched socks on “Fox in Socks” day, when was the students’ opportunity to bring in books to share with their classmates. Children wore green and brought in snacks to eat during independent reading time on “Green Eggs and Ham” day, and wore pajamas and read by flash light on “The

Children came into school with crazy hairstyles and brought in Dr. Seuss books to read. Several classes partnered up for buddy reading, such as first graders in Melanie Kane’s class who joined up with second graders from Antoinette MacPherson’s class. Ms. Kane noted that shared reading is a great learning experience that fosters interest in literature and promotes the development of literacy skills. “Seuss Week was presented in a way that made reading fun,” Assistant Principal Mary Anne Ferraro said, “but also celebrated an author that has made a positive impact in the education of young readers.”

Berner Middle School Geography Bee champion Ken Zheng, an eighth grader, has qualified for the New York State National Geographic Geography Bee. He will take an online exam on March 27. All Berner students took a preliminary exam in their social studies classes with 21 advancing to the school geography bee afterschool on Jan. 17. Following his victory, Ken took a qualifying exam and scored among the 100 students in New York to earn a spot as state semifinalist. He will vie for a chance to move on to the national championship in Washington D.C. in May. “We want to congratulate Ken on his amazing accomplishment, said Dr. Brian Trapani, curriculum associate for social studies, “and we wish him luck in the state competition.”

Students, Speakers Bring Attention To The Environment Massapequa High School hosted a full-day environmental conference on Feb. 27 featuring expert speakers and information booths. All Things Environmental was coordinated by students from Team ECHO and their adviser, Bob Hempel. Team ECHO – Environmental Conservation at Home – is a student-led club that aims to increase awareness about the environment and take practical steps to improve the community and the planet. Past initiatives have included school campus and beach cleanups as well as tree plantings. The yearly environmental day has grown each year since its inception and this year’s event featured several speakers including Erich Dietterle from the Long Island-based Atlantic Marine Conservation Society. He spoke about his organization’s efforts to promote marine conservation through action and educated students about the

sea turtles and marine mammals in New York’s waters that the society strives to protect. Christopher Mayer from the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Environmental Resources spoke about shellfish restoration efforts. Sally Kellogg and Rachelle Neville, from the Long Island South Shore Estuary Reserve, discussed horseshoe crabs. Massapequa High School graduate Joseph Prusan, the valedictorian of the Class of 2016, participated in a video conference with students about his hydroponics research at UCLA. Students from Massapequa’s science research program who are have environmentalfocused projects shared their work at an information session in the lobby. Teacher Dr. Paul Hesleitner said that the students have been conducting extensive research to try to provide real solutions to

environmental issues. Seniors Sean Nuzio and Theodore Woodworth discussed their efforts to make dye-sensitized solar cells. The transparent solar panels would be put on windows without blocking a person’s view. The materials they are using for the prototype include conductive glass, a carbon steel frame, pomegranate juice, titanium oxide and silicon. Talia Cartafalsa, Gabrielle Marsico and Victoria Marsico are studying the occurrences of lung cancer on Long Island and New York State and making correlations to known toxic sites. Adriana Zanone is working on a way to generate power from walking, creating enough energy to recharge a cell phone. Teacher Michael LaBella and students from the high school’s Go Green class shared information about the third-year course, which is focused on sustainable living.

Property Tax Grievance Workshops Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato today announced two additional Property Tax Assessment Grievance Workshops will be offered for residents looking to acquire information on how to challenge their 2021-2022 property tax assessments. The deadline to challenge the assessment on your home was recently extended to Thursday, April 2nd. The free workshops will be held on: • Tuesday, March 24th at 7pm at Town Hall, located at 54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay. This seminar is offered in partnership with County Legislator Josh Lafazan and the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission. • Wednesday, March 25th at 2pm at the Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 W. Carl Street in Hicksville. This seminar is offered in partnership with

County Legislator Rose Walker and Hempstead Town Receiver of Taxes Jeanine Driscoll. The workshop is open to residents from both the towns of Hempstead and Oyster Bay. “While Nassau County determines your value, we in Town government want to make sure you know that you have a right as homeowner to challenge your assessment. Remember, your assessment can only be lowered as the result of a challenge – it can never be raised – and this workshop helps you challenge for free,” said Receiver of Taxes Pravato. “If you are a homeowner who disagrees with the assessed value of your property, I invite you to attend one of these Property Tax Assessment Workshops, as the property tax grievance deadline of April 2nd is approaching.” In January 2020, Nassau County notified residents of their home’s new

tentative assessed value for the 2021/2022 school tax period and the 2022 general tax period. Any residents who did not receive the notice may view it online at www.mynassauproperty. com or contact their local County legislator. At the workshops, an assessment expert will answer questions and show residents how to use online tools to file an “Application for Correction of Assessment” online or via mail. There is no requirement to pay a law firm or agency to file a grievance.
