Students from Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District recently came together for a full day of hands-on, social and emotional instruction during the third annual Chief’s Challenge Day. The event featured a powerful presentation, “Ryan’s Story,” by John Halligan who told his heart-wrenching story of his son who endured years of bullying and ultimately committed suicide. There were also numerous activities centered on the themes represented in the book, “The Seventh Most Important Thing,” by

Shelley Pearsall, such as analyzing quotes from the story. Students explored topics such as bullying and harassment, loss and forgiveness, redemption, cooperation and acceptance. As a way to build trust, students participated in a series of physical activities in the gym that required teamwork, such as walking across the gym balancing a ball on a paddle or taking turns throwing a football through a hula hoop. Students in the Chief’s Challenge Club and the Builder’s Club made posters and decorated lockers with uplifting messages,

Bridging the Generations Seniors and students came together to celebrate the holidays, as musicians from Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District visited the Bristal Assisted Living facility in Amityville on December 16th. Fifth- and sixth-grade students in the Jazz Band, under the direction of Chris Marson, and the Chamber Orchestra, led by

Alison Pearl, performed a variety of popular holiday songs for the seniors. Students from the two groups then put down their instruments and spread out around the room with song booklets. Led by music teacher Janice Abel, everyone sang Christmas tunes together. “I love Christmas songs and I like playing for other people, and I think

they really like it,” said sixth-grader Sam Greco, a member of the Jazz Band. “I think the senior citizens appreciate it. Island Head Start program in Amityville. Key Club members wrapped the toys after school and visited the facility December 20th to hand out gifts to 137 children. They also sang Christmas songs and spent some time getting to know the kids. “I like gift giving,” said Key Club Secretary Meghan McClenahan. “It makes you feel good and it

makes them feel special for a little while.” The Key Club, a student community service organization, has partnered with Long Island Head Start for years to provide toys to the children. The students also lead food drives for Island Harvest and participated in the annual breast cancer awareness walk at Jones Beach.

“The Empire Regional is considered the most prestigious regional competition, from a talent perspective, in the nation,” said coach Erica Jordan. “Second place is an unbelievable victory for our school. I couldn’t be more proud and amazed at how far this team has come.” This is the second year that the squad will be competing in

the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship in Walt Disney World. Last year the team competed in the Super Varsity Division I category and placed among the top 11 teams. The 2017 competition takes place on February 11th-12th and is televised on ESPN and ESPN2 to more than 100 million homes around the world.

The Closing Chapter When you look back over the course of your life, there are often certain places that seem to stand out as the setting for your most treasured memories. For me, that place was always my grandparents’ house. From holiday gatherings to backyard barbecues, childhood sleepovers to Yankee baseball game viewing; countless events were centered on that old beloved split level. My grandparents had moved there in 1960, one of the first of their family to have had the opportunity to “move eastward” to the country-like expanses of Long Island from the cozy

confines of Long Island City. With them came my then eight year-old mother and my four year-old uncle, followed a number of years later by my aunt; and thus the perfect “starter” home became the setting for the decades of memories which followed, not only for them but for the next generation as well – myself included. Little did they know that the nearly vacant block they moved onto would grow into the close-nit community it is today, filled with neighbors and friends, and even a few family members, on the surrounding streets. Exploring the Origins of New Year’s Resolutions

of making resolutions to the ancient Babylonians. More than 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians celebrated the New Year in March rather than January. The spring harvest was in March, and a festival called Akitu, which lasted 12 days, was celebrated. An important part of the festival was the crowning of a new king. Special rituals also affirmed a connection to the gods. The Babylonians made promises to the gods, which included vows to return borrowed objects and pay outstanding debts.

Resolutions can also be traced to ancient Rome. The Romans were instrumental in creating a more formal calendar, and the start of the new year was moved from March to January (January and February were added to the Roman calendar under the rule of Numa Pompilius). Julius Caesar wanted to honor January’s namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings. Janus’ two faces enabled him to look back into the past and forward into the future. Sacrifices to Janus were made, and worshipers exchanged gifts

with one another. A custom of setting resolutions began during this period as well, with Romans promising to be good to one another. Eventually, these resolutions were funneled into prayers and fasting when Christianity was adopted by the Roman Empire. Other religious parallels include the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which is a day of atonement and reflection as celebrants examine their wrongdoings and seek forgiveness and to behave better moving forward. Yom

Kippur follows Rosh Hashanah, Judaism’s own new year. Resolutions also may be loosely tied to Medieval times. During this time, knights took a “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season. Each year, these knights would reaffirm their commitment to chivalry. Today New Year’s resolutions are largely a secular tradition, but they’re still connected to a desire to be a good person and put one’s best self forward.

Choose a designated driver to drive throughout the night, or agree to utilize a taxi or shuttle service if everyone plans to consume alcohol. Men and women who volunteer to be designated drivers should be especially alert on the roadways, preparing to drive in potentially inclement weather and

throughout the festivities so the party is memorable for all the right reasons.

Bettering the World Clean water, world hunger and affordable energy are some of the issues that sixthgraders are tackling at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Magnet teacher Lindsay Cafiero is leading students in a project focused on the United Nations Agenda 2030, and has them identifying solutions to one of the 17 sustainable development goals adopted in 2015. BETTERING THE WORLD - Birch Lane Elementary School magnet teacher Lindsay Birch Lane is one of Cafiero watched as sixth-graders Brandon Alessi and Michael Flaherty worked on their many schools all over the project to create a filter that would help provide clean and affordable energy. challenges facing the planet. She said it is important for students to not only know about these problems, but also show that they can be part of the solution. Ms. Cafiero, whose classroom theme this year is “Make Your Mark on the World,” started by reading “The Water Princess” by Susan Verde to the students, about a child who had to walk several miles each day to find clean water. Then, groups picked topics they wanted to explore and used their “creative superpowers” to explore possible solutions and come up with plans of

action. One group is planning to create a compost pile at the school while others are exploring ways to reduce hunger, replace Styrofoam packing materials with a more environmentally friendly alternative and repurpose vapor water. “This is helping the students become aware of their rights as humans to a clean and better world,” Ms. Cafiero said. “I want them to realize that their voice is powerful and there are so many ways that they can help the world or their community.”
