From the comfort of their desks, fifth-graders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District were able to take a trip around the world for the holidays. Students in Mary Elizabeth Delaney’s class learned about holiday traditions and customs in other countries using their Chromebooks. After reading a passage about the different ways in which people celebrate, students wrote stories about their own holiday traditions. They then used
an interactive map, the Google Santa Tracker, to learn about celebrations in other countries. Each student picked five nations and then related those traditions to their own using a digital graphic organizer. The project continued with students writing magnetic poetry. They had to pick words from a list, which resembled refrigerator magnets, and crafted poems about winter. After that, they built snowmen using
Google Slides. Each student could customize his or her creation with eyes, a nose, a mouth, arms, feet and accessories. Ms. Delaney created the lesson along with technology learning coach Louisa Vecchione. The different components supported nonfiction writing, history and geography while giving students the opportunity to become more familiar with the programs and applications available on their Chromebooks.

their rooms, a mobile cart or iPad enabled with Cisco Jabber software helped Santa travel room-toroom for a personalized bedside visit – all of this without once leaving his workshop in the North Pole, according to the children. “We’re so happy that Cisco was able to bring their expertise once again to Cohen during this holiday season,” said Patricia Ottavanio, special events coordinator at Cohen Children’s. “Thanks to them, we are able to bring Santa to the children. During this time of year, it’s very difficult for children and their loved ones to be away from home. Events such as these help make Chanukah and Christmas a happier time for these families.” Brian and Keri Adams, of Central Islip, joined their infant son, Derek, in the playroom. Watching with happiness as he banged on a little drum, Derek’s parents said: “This event makes children feel like they’re not in the hospital. We appreciate the effort being made by everyone here today to being Santa to our children.”

Christmas came a little early this year to the young patients at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, thanks to the kindness of technical wizards at Presidio and Cisco Systems. Through the Cisco Santa Connection, patients who are unable to celebrate in the comfort of their own homes due to illness can still experience the magic of the holiday. Using a video monitor and web-enabled camera today, Santa “virtually” visited with children in the third floor playroom who were eager to discuss their holiday wish lists. The children, who were led to believe that Santa was communicating live from his home in the North Pole, deliveredw a list that ran the gamut from electric guitars and video games to toy trucks and art books. In the meantime, Santa (who spends the rest of the year as a Cohen Children’s employee) spoke lovingly to the children who were accompanied in the playroom by Child Life staff members dressed as elves and other holiday characters. And, for those who didn’t feel well enough to leave

There are two schools of thought relating to this; the first is that things have the ability to change in the blink of an eye, to take on an entirely new, often unexpected
direction. This can be in the form of a beautiful surprise, or a tragic turn; there is simply no telling. We are well aware of these possibilities. In fact, we will often remark how grateful we should be for the present, how appreciative of our blessings and those whom we love dearly. And yet, somewhere along the way, we tend to forget how very lucky we are.

gingerbread man is unsuccessful in crossing a river, so Lockhart students had to build a bridge that would bring him to safety. They had several materials to use including straws, Popsicle sticks and cardboard. Each group had to test the different materials, and added gram
weights to see which created the strongest bridge. Magnet and STEAM teacher Joanne Markowski said that students followed the claim, evidence and reasoning model to analyze their results and explain their findings.

Connecting through Writing Students in two secondgrade classes in the Massapequa School District may live on opposite sides of the community, but they feel a strong connection. The children have become pen pals, and are getting to know each other through an old-fashioned way of communication — letters. Teachers Mary Anne Ferraro at McKenna Elementary School in the north end of the district
and Janeen Signorile at Birch Lane Elementary School on the southside arranged to have their students communicate throughout the school year. Ms. Ferraro’s secondgraders wrote the initial set of letters, in which each child included some personal information such as his or her birthday, hobbies and interests, and drew a self-portrait. Then, Ms. Signorile’s students
wrote similar letters back, which they sent in decorated envelopes. Ms. Signorile has a student in her class, Ava Przedwiecki, who attended McKenna last year and had Ms. Ferraro as her first-grade teacher. That spawned the idea for the partnership. The goal by the end of the year is to have students write fullpage letters to their pen pals.

The Student Council and Students Against Destructive Decisions at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District teamed up to raise money to support people affected by recent disasters. Staff members and
students participated in the Dollars for Disasters fundraiser by donating $1 each. In order to promote this event, SADD created vibrant posters that were hung in the hallways and Student Council created a video using the green screen. The school
raised $262, which was recently presented to a representative from the American Red Cross. The Student Council is advised by teachers Erin Rohan and Mary Ellen Scheffler, and SADD is facilitated by social worker Melissa Verlizzo.
Third-graders at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District spread some holiday cheer while expanding their vocabulary. Students in Danielle Siebner’s class created kindness adjective snowflakes as a bulletin
board project. Each child created a paper snowflake and wrote his or her name on it. The students then sat in a circle and the snowflakes were passed around the room and filled with kind words by their classmates. Ms. Siebner said that students weren’t able
to repeat words, so if a word someone felt best described a classmate was already used, he or she had to think of something else. She explained that the purpose of the project was to cultivate kindness and celebrate the uniqueness of each child, just like how each snowflake is unique.

Kind Kids Club Kindness was the theme throughout December at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Firstgrade teachers formed the Kind Kids Club and
encouraged their students to perform good deeds. There was a designated random act of kindness each day, such as writing a thank you letter to a staff member or playing

Just about every piece of candy a kid could imagine was at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on December
15th, but none of it was for eating, at least not right away. First-graders made gingerbread houses, an East Lake holiday tradition. Students from the four

Home Sweet Homes classes gathered together in the cafeteria as holiday music played in the background. Each child was joined by a family member to help make his or her creation. The children used empty milk and juice cartons as the base, covered them with icing and stuck on graham crackers. After adding another layer of icing, students creatively decorated their houses with candy canes, gumdrops, marshmallows and other color pieces of candy. They were able to take their finished products home as a holiday centerpiece.

New Year’s Eve is upon us - a night filled with merriment, an abundance of food, plenty of alcohol, and of course those dreaded resolutions. For me, it became an annual ritual to tell myself this is the year you’re going to lose weight and get healthy. This year is different for me and, for the first time, my goals have expanded. A Hand for the Holidays The hands of more than two dozen students at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus were busy sorting pajama and book donations after school on December 18th for the community service organization’s annual holiday drive. The Helping Hands club was preparing the items for delivery two days later to the Central Islip Head Start preschool program. Members encouraged their classmates to donate
new children’s pajamas and storybooks. The club collected 161 pairs of pajamas, more than enough to help the 140 students at the school. The ninth-graders visited Head Start to hand out the pajamas and read with the youngsters. Club advisers Alyssa Levine and Karen Matros said that it is important for Ames students to interact with the preschool children and see the impact that their donations have.

Massapequa High School musicians shared their talents with community members and their younger peers on December 18th during their concert, “An Afternoon of Holiday Music.” The show featured vocal performances by the Treble Choir under the direction
of Ilena Dempsey and the A Cappella Choir led by Nichole Greene. The two groups sang a variety of Christmas and Hanukkah songs. Instrumental holiday tunes were provided by the orchestra, conducted by Al Kunnis. The concert ended with a combined performance by the orchestra and choruses.
Local senior citizens and eighth-grade music students from Berner Middle School were invited to the complimentary show. Dr. David Gaines, curriculum associate for music, said it was the high school’s “gift of music” to the community.

Christmas Tree Drop-Off Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Town will have two drop-off locations for safe disposal of discarded Christmas trees after the holiday season concludes. The drop-off locations, which will be located at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa and William Bennett Community Center in Hicksville, offer residents a safe and environmentallyfriendly manner of disposal for those who do not wish to wait for their next yard waste collection date. “We all love the beauty of
Christmas lights and trees during the holiday season. After the celebrations are over, it is important to discard the tree in a timely manner as Christmas trees can pose as a fire hazard, especially after drying out,” Supervisor Saladino said. “I recently partnered with the Massapequa Fire Department and the Nassau County Fire Marshall’s office to educate residents on the dangers Christmas trees can pose when not cared for properly. Proper and prompt disposal of a dried out tree is very important,
and I’m glad to be able to establish these dropoff locations for residents who wish to immediately dispose of their tree instead of waiting for their next scheduled yard waste collection day.” Roll-off containers will be placed at both John J. Burns Park in Massapequa and William Bennett Community Center in Hicksville immediately following Christmas Day. Educational leaders representing Parent Teacher Associations (PTA) from across Nassau County experienced firsthand the various and versatile talents of Nassau BOCES students during the second annual Nassau BOCES PTA Dinner. More than 60 educators
attended the event, where they were treated to culinary creations from Barry Tech students, entertained by student musicians from the Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), and learned about the over 150 programs that Nassau BOCES has to offer.
