Kindergartners traveled from room to room at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on November 21st for Thanksgiving-themed fun. Each station had a different activity. Before visiting the centers, students learned about the voyage of the

Mayflower and the early lives of the Pilgrims and Native Americans. They read stories about how the first Thanksgiving was celebrated. Children churned milk into butter and enjoyed it with cornbread, made Native American headdresses, created edible versions of the

Mayflower using apple slices, toothpicks and marshmallows, and decorated paper bags to look like scarecrows, which were then filled with popcorn. Teachers Amy Agovino, Catherine Bellomo, Kathy Mulitz and Gina Ring led the activities.

The Christmas Closet I used to love decorating for the holidays. Each year, I couldn’t wait for the lights to go up in my neighborhood, the house to smell like pine needles and all the cherished knick knacks to find their way to the shelves. That was, until I began accumulating more decorations than my own little apartment could handle. To say my closets resemble something out of an episode of Hoarders would be overly dramatic; however, the fact that my coat closet no longer accommodates clothing of any kind, but rather, a fairly hefty collection of boxes piled nearly to the ceiling, tends to give me pause. In order to sort through what belongs to Christmas, specifically, it is now necessary to remove nearly all of these containers, briefly peek inside, and then continue to dig. To be fair, these are not all my decorations. Not quite. Once my grandfather passed away and we began the painstaking process

of cleaning out the house my grandparents had called home for nearly 60 years, I acquired several boxes of cherished holiday possessions to add to my already-growing collection. Don’t get me wrong: to the outside observer, it probably doesn’t look like much. And, for the remainder of the year, the vast majority of lights and garlands and greens are out of sight. Only I know what lurks behind those closet doors. (And now, you, dear readers.) It is only once the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers has been packed away in the fridge and the sounds of Christmas carols have invaded the airwaves that my mind turns to the menagerie that lies within. Usually, it is a two-week ordeal; one for the random figurines and wreaths, accents and novelties - and the other, for the tree, my skinny, sixfoot tall “apartment tree” that comes neatly folded in a box, possibly the most compact of

all my original purchases. Last year, I kept the decorations fairly low-key, favoring instead only the most special of my grandparents’ holiday mementos, a few white lights and my very own Charlie Brown tree. This year… well, let’s just say the process may need to be expanded to three weeks. The way I see it, as long as all is completed by a week or so before Christmas Eve, there is plenty of time left to enjoy. I’ve never been part of the crowd that feels the need to put up the nativity as the last of the trick-or-treaters is leaving; nor do I rush to pack it all away before the final present has been unwrapped on Christmas morning. To each his or her own. However you choose to celebrate, whatever the extent of your decorations… as long as you enjoy them, even if no one else has occasion to see them, that is all that matters. Happy decorating.

Connecting with Vets Veterans shared their personal stories with students as Massapequa School District’s Berner Middle School hosted its 11th annual Take a Veteran to School Day program on November 9th. All students gathered in the gymnasium for a morning assembly in which they paid tribute to the men and women who served the United States. Musical selections by the Vocal Points, under the direction of Andrea Gropf, included “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” Executive Assistant to the Principal Barbara

Lowell introduced each of the more than 50 veterans who attended that day, and would later visit eighthgrade social studies classes to chat with students in small groups. Principal Jason Esposito told students that the best gift they can give to a veteran is going up to one and saying “thank you.” The special guests included members of local veteran’s organizations such as the American Legion and VFW, as well as family members of students, administrators, teachers and staff. Many shared photos and other memorabilia from their

military service. “I liked hearing their stories, and hearing about how they got into the military or fought in battles or just helped out in the background,” said eighthgrader Emmie McBride. “This was important for the veterans because they got to pass on their stories to the next generation.” Social studies teacher Noreen Miller, who organized the event, said that all of the conflicts that the veterans fought in

are covered in the eighthgrade curriculum. “This is more than students can read in a textbook,” she said. “They can make a connection from what they learn in class by talking to someone who actually experienced it.” The Berner staff created a “Honoring Our Own” wall in the library by bringing in pictures and artifacts documenting the military service of veterans in their own families.

technology learning coach Vickie Ahearn, students were able to select from a wide array of eyes, beaks, feathers, feet and hats to create their images in the Build a Turkey project. They could also choose a background. Ms. Ahearn explained that it gave students an introduction to Google

Slides, a program they will be using for many years to create interactive presentations. The project also supported literacy instruction as children wrote short narratives about what they are thankful for this year to accompany their turkey images.

Kindness, respect and acceptance were among the themes at an antibullying interactive concert at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on November 13th. Students played an integral role in Lee Knight’s Books Alive program,

which was presented by the school and the PTA’s Arts in Education committee. They were invited to come up on stage and perform along with Lee Knight, whose songs were based off of popular children’s books such as “Recess Queen,” “Wonder,” and “Harry

Antibullying Message Potter” and “Horton Hears a Who!” Messages included standing up for others, not judging people by their appearance, recognizing that everyone has strengths, and treating others respectfully.

Journaling Goes Digital While keeping journals has long been a common expectation for students, the way in which children record their thoughts has changed to reflect modern times. That is evident in Mary Elizabeth Delaney’s fifth-grade class at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, where blogging has become a part of the classroom routine. Students use Kidblog, a web-based publishing site, to share more about

themselves and reflect on their academics. This is possible because of the expansion of the district’s 1:1 Chromebook initiative, which has provided students with their own devices to use throughout the school day. The youngsters recently completed their first blogging assignments, in which they had to share recent moments in their lives. Topics ranged from “How I Got My Cat” to “My Horrible Surfing

Experience.” Ms. Delaney said that children can customize their blogs with pictures and graphics, and can choose the colors and fonts. Students are expected to update their blogs on a regular basis and use them to practice their writing with proper spelling, grammar and punctuation. All students in the class can view the blogs and are encouraged to leave kind comments for their classmates.

Two dozen athletes from Massapequa High School committed to colleges during a recent national letter of intent signing ceremony. The 24 seniors will continue their academic and athletic pursuits at colleges and universities across the country. The signees included seven students from the boys lacrosse team, six from the baseball team, five from girls lacrosse and three from girls soccer. Several athletes will remain teammates in college including Michael Abagnale and Michael Homan who will play baseball for SUNY Old Westbury; Michael Grisanti and Vinny Morales who will suit up for the baseball team at College of Mount

Talking Up a Storm Ninth-graders in meteorology classes at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus studied hurricanes and recently presented their interactive reports. Students worked in pairs to study nine storms, ranging from Hurricane Iniki in 1992 to Hurricane Matthew in 2016, along with Hurricane Irene which hit Long Island as a tropical storm in 2011. In PowerPoint presentations, each team presented facts about its assigned storm such as when it happened, its path

and the damage that it caused. They also included charts with measurements of wind speeds, air pressure, rainfall and storm surges, along with pictures, video clips and satellite images. Teacher Nicholas Donohue said that students learned the properties of hurricanes as well as the differences among individual storms. They developed an understanding of how hurricanes form, how forecasters track storms and how building codes have been affected.

Students Sound Off

The students used their Chromebooks to research hurricanes using data from the National Weather Service and to create their presentations. The meteorology course is an elective for students who have already taken earth science. Topics are tied in with the current seasons, which is why students learned about hurricanes in the fall. As the year progresses, they will learn how to read computer models to forecast the weather.

Personal Touch Red, white and blue paper chains were used to create an American flag in the fourth-grade hallway at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District as a way of marking Veterans Day. Each fourth-grade

student received a blank paper star and wrote the name of a veteran in his or her family. The stars were then added to the flag. Teacher Jessica Shippos said this was the first time they have done this project. “We wanted the students

to think about the men and women who have protected us and our country,” she said. “It gave them an opportunity to reflect on people in their lives who they consider heroes.”

Bond Resolution Adopted During the November 16th meeting of the Massapequa Public Schools Board of Education, trustees unanimously approved a resolution to move forward with a bond proposal to improve district facilities that will be put before voters on January 23rd, 2018. The proposal will be presented to the community in two separate propositions. Proposition #1 includes general education classroom renovations and bathroom improvements at Berner Middle School, Birch Lane Elementary School, East Lake Elementary School, Fairfield Elementary School, Lockhart Elementary School, McKenna Elementary School and Unqua Elementary School. Bathrooms at Massapequa High School’s Ames campus will also be renovated. Additionally, Proposition #1 would replace the original grass

practice field at Berner Middle School with a new synthetic turf multipurpose field with striping for three sports, subsurface drainage system, pre-engineered spectator bleachers and concrete pad, ADA accessible ramp and stairs leading to the practice field, and adjoining retaining wall repairs. If approved by voters, $19.575 million of the total cost of $28.575 million for Proposition #1 will be bonded. The district will utilize $9 million from its capital reserve to fund the remainder of the cost. Proposition #2, for a total cost not to exceed $13.225 million, would install classroom air conditioners districtwide. If approved, this multizone split system would replace the approximately 220 units currently utilized in select classes. The benefits would include lower energy consumption costs, more efficient supply of conditioned air, individual

classroom temperature control and improved indoor air quality. The total cost of both Proposition #1 and Proposition #2 is approximately $41.8 million; however, the district would receive 53.3 percent of the project’s total cost through New York State Building Aid. The bond vote is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018 from 6 a.m.9 p.m. at Massapequa High School, Fairfield Elementary School, Lockhart Elementary School and McKenna Elementary School. More information on the projects will be made available through the district’s website, www. msd.k12.ny.us, and via a voter guide mailed to all community residents. With clipboards in hand, students at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District observed a “crash site” near the playground and had to record their findings. To mark National STEAM Day, an initiative to promote science, technology, engineering, the arts and math, McKenna students put on their jackets and goggles and went outside to look

at a large black rock that represented a meteorite and a mystery metal object that fell from space. Each class was given 20 minutes to observe on November 8th and 9th. They had to draw sketches and write down the characteristics of the objects before returning to their classrooms for group discussions. Students in the upper grades had to work together to come up with a way to send the mystery metal object back

into space. The purpose of the activity was to promote curiosity and excitement, foster science-based investigation and encourage collaboration. It was organized by magnet and STEAM teacher Michelle Scott and secondgrade teacher Mary Anne Ferraro, who said they wanted to make science fun while stimulating young minds.

Teaming Up for the Troops Elementary students in the Massapequa School District recently did their part to help the troops. Birch Lane and Lockhart elementary schools participated in the AdoptA-Battalion collection drive to coincide with Veterans Day. Children were asked

to bring in donations such as gum, candy, granola bars, toothpaste and toothbrushes, soap, shampoo and sunscreen. Each grade was assigned a specific item to ensure that all needs would be met for the care packages to be sent to military servicemen and women overseas.

The collection drive was organized by the Student Council at Birch Lane under the direction of teachers Lauren Marocchi and Alison Morgan and by the SADD Club at Lockhart led by social worker Kerry Rivera.

Mural Club Students continue to add more color to the hallways of Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus. After the successful completion of a studentdesigned, Chiefs-inspired painting last year by the main entrance, a Mural

Club was formed and has been tackling its first project. Ninth-graders recently began work on a 35-foot long, 5-foot high mural on a blank white wall in the hallway across from the Pupil Personnel Services

office. After receiving student input, art teacher and mural club adviser Sue Perakakis came up with the design, which students traced out in pencil before they began painting afterschool on November 8th.

When the mural is complete, it will feature 21 different colors along with various inspirational messages like “Don’t tell me the sky is the limit when there are footprints on the moon” and “Whatever you’re thinking,

think bigger.” It will have illustrations of light bulbs, trees, waves, a peace sign, the earth and the Massapequa Chiefs logo. “This new mural is part of our continued efforts to beautify the building and create a warm, nurturing

environment,” said Principal Jordan McCaw. “We want to give students a sense of pride in their school and what better way to do that than with student artwork.”

Cooking Up Ideas Students throughout the Massapequa School District are becoming more familiar with the engineering design process with an increased focus on STEAMbased activities. At Birch Lane Elementary School, fourth-graders recently explored science, technology, engineering, the arts and math by creating solar ovens. The enrichment activity was led by magnet and STEAM teacher Lindsay Cafiero, and taught students how they

could cook food without electricity. They started with pizza boxes supplied by Phil’s Pizza of Massapequa, then could use any materials found in the classroom such as construction paper, newspapers and aluminum foil. The youngsters explored how energy is transferred and discovered which materials are more conductive. They were able to use their Chromebooks to do research, then worked in teams to create

and implement their designs. Groups then competed to see which solar oven would melt ice the fastest by putting their creations outside on a sunny day.
