The Book Fairies, located in Freeport, NY, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that accepts donations of new and gently used books and connects them with organizations throughout all five boroughs and Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Some of those organizations are hospitals, schools, veteran organizations and soup kitchens.

Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers.

The Book Fairies does more than just impact their local community; they are also dedicated to supporting literacy programs in underdeveloped nations around the world. How to Make Use of a Jacket

Coming up to New York after living in Florida, my nine year old son grew accustomed to living his life in t-shirts and shorts, unencumbered by the heavy winter gear that New Yorkers wear. As the weather has grown colder, he has been resistant to wearing his jacket, hat and gloves; instead insisting on layering t-shirts and sweatshirts. For weeks now, our morning routine has included me begging, pleading, warning him about getting sick, threatening to take away various priviliges, and at

What I’ve realized is, ultimately, I don’t have control. My job as his parent is to empower him with love, values, ideas, compassion, and the information he needs to make the right decisions for himself. All I can do is sit back and allow him to experience the world. This morning, as we were waiting together for the school bus to arrive, I observed that my son’s hat and gloves were inside his backpack; his winter jacket slung over his arm. None of these items were actually on his body. I said, “Uh... you know, carrying a hat and gloves, and holding your winter jacket won’t keep you warm. They only work if you wear them.” He replied, “I know that.” I nodded my head in mutual understanding and said, “Okay, good. I just want to be sure that

They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. - Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! Additionally, book donations and financial donations are always welcome and The Book Fairies is in need of corporate sponsors. The Little Mermaid Nearly 100 young actors will bring the 1989 Disney animated film “The Little Mermaid” to the stage in this weekend’s musical production hosted by the Berner Middle School Theatre Box Players. Well-known songs like “Part of Your World,” “Under the Sea” and “Kiss the Girl” will be performed in the two-

When people throughout Nassau County receive hot meals on Thanksgiving, they will also receive colorful cards made by students at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Library media specialist Melinda Alford and her husband have spearheaded an effort for more than 20 years to provide a happy Thanksgiving for people who are alone on the holiday. It started with dinner at a restaurant

and has transformed into meal deliveries to more than 300 homes throughout the county, including Massapequa, by 50 volunteers. Ms. Alford said that a person’s economic situation is not considered. The volunteers are encouraged to spend some time on Thanksgiving with each person they visit, which is just an integral part of the experience as the homemade food they are providing. In the days leading up

a new dog park should be constructed or the current facility upgraded to include paving over the dirt parking lot and adding other improvements. New programming was added as well, including activities for pets and their owners, the first of which was held on Sunday, October 21, 2018. The dog park in Massapequa has an adjoining parcel of land that is also owned by the Town of Oyster Bay. Even though it is located on the west side of County Line Road, it is in fact in Suffolk County. The Town of Oyster Bay never had intentions to deprive dog park facilities in Massapequa from our residents. We have stated this since day one. The Town of Oyster Bay sought to appraise and determine the value of properties as one of the many factors needed in reaching the decision of whether or not to move the park to an adjacent or nearby location. Any homeowner, business owner or government leader must have information needed to make decisions that are most suitable for all. Throughout the year the Town of Oyster Bay had numerous parcels of land professionally

appraised. This was done because New York State set aside $2.8 billion over the past two years for water quality, environmental protection and open-space preservation. Certain properties throughout the Town of Oyster Bay could serve as prime candidates for land preservation purchase by New York State. The selling of property to New York State guarantees its preservation while assisting to further reduce the debt of our town and turns over maintenance costs from our tax payers to New York State. With significant State funds allocated for this purpose, we believe it presents an opportunity to obtain our fair share of State funding from Albany. As many know, Town taxpayers send far more money to Albany than they receive back in return. Some of the main goals of our administration are to preserve land and protect our many services while simultaneously securing our fair share of resources back from Albany. Please know that we love our pets and this administration is committed to expanding opportunities for pets and pet lovers alike in a safe and meaningful way.

The Town of Oyster Bay is proud of its dog park in Massapequa. Information related to this site has recently been misreported and falsely presented to the point that I recognize I must set the record straight. Statements by State Senator John Brooks attempt to create a rumor that the Town of Oyster Bay planned to close the dog park facilities in Massapequa. These statements are untrue and a blatant example of fear mongering. In fact, Senator Brooks never contacted the Town of Oyster Bay to obtain the facts on this matter. Town officials have discussed the construction of new, state-of-the-art dog parks in both the Massapequa and Bayville areas. In Bayville, a new dog park is planned for the North Shore. It will include separate enclosures for large and small dogs with the majority of the funding for this project coming from a grant acquired by State Senator Carl Marcellino. In regard to Massapequa, the current dog park is located on a large parcel of land in Nassau County and we believe improvements would benefit pet owners. The town has long considered whether

Tiniest of Babies at NYU Winthrop Some of Long Island’s tiniest babies celebrated their first Halloween dressed up as witches, mermaids, candy corn, and Harry Potter characters at a celebration arranged by the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) staff at NYU Winthrop Hospital. The goal was to provide parents of the newborns, who can’t stroll among trick-or-treaters in their own neighborhoods, an opportunity to create a special Halloween memory while still in the Hospital. More than 20 babies, including some of the tiniest ones born prematurely, donned adorable costumes that were devotedly crafted. Both day and nighttime NICU staff voted for the Cutest, Funniest, and Best Overall, with the winning families receiving jam-packed baskets of baby goodies. “These costumes capture the tiny personalities of our NICU babies, and the contest

brings great joy to the parents, who get to experience the spirit of Halloween even while their child is in the hospital,” said Caterina Tiozzo, MD, PhD, Neonatologist at NYU Winthrop. “The event is also providing parents an occasion to focus on costumes and fun rather than worries and fears, helping them to deal with the stress of having a baby in the NICU and allowing them to start building joyful memories with their babies.” The NICU is a special nursery for babies born prematurely (before 37 weeks) or with other medical problems such as breathing disorders, feeding issues, heart problems, infections or conditions requiring surgery. Premature babies often have more than one problem because their systems are immature, and they need to grow before they can go home. NYU Winthrop’s NICU is ranked among the best in the world regarding its outcomes,

both in terms of overall survival and survival without complications in extremely premature babies. This is when compared to more than 800 NICUs by the prestigious Vermont Oxford Registry Network, an authority on the measurement of care and outcomes for high-risk infants. “Babies in the NICU may have been born too small, too soon, or with a medical condition that requires they be in the hospital for weeks or months, which can be very draining on the parents,” added LaShon Pitter, Nurse Manager of NYU Winthrop Hospital NICU. “We continually look for ways to support the families during these challenging times, and the joy and laughter that this Halloween contest brings is definitely a dose of the right medicine for parents.” This is the second year this NYU Winthrop Halloween contest was held.

Thanksgiving Crafting First-graders made a variety of Thanksgivingthemed crafts at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on November 20th. Students in Jeanne

Genovese’s and Doreen Jaeger’s classes rotated through centers using a variety of art supplies to make their colorful creations. Children made turkey hats out of

construction paper and turkey handprints with paint. They also designed Thanksgiving placemats to take home depicting what they are thankful for this year.
