Earth Study Third-graders at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently participated in an interdisciplinary project as part of their study of geography. The lesson in James Sciara’s class combined social studies,

literacy, art and technology. Students worked in pairs and used their new Chromebooks to learn about the seven continents and four oceans. They did research on the planet’s largest water bodies and land masses and recorded their answers in Google

Docs. Additionally, they found images of the world on Google Images and colored paper maps. The third-grade social studies curriculum focuses on geography, maps and directions.

Of Foliage and Fuzzy Friends For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted a “furry” pet of some kind, be it a puppy, kitten, bunny, even a guinea pig. Of course, once I moved into my own apartment and realized that such fuzzy companions require far more attention than I, as a full-time member of the workforce, can provide, I settled for my beloved little Buddy the Betta - and, following his passing, my new baby Betta, Norton von Spudly. Not exactly furry, but still fairly entertaining and interactive as fish go. Perhaps I should mention that, in the apartment complex where I reside, one tends to come across all sorts of creatures, from stray cats and kittens wandering the property, to turtles and fish by the pond, robins and blue jays and other assorted winged folk, and even the occasional baby fox roaming near the dumpster. And squirrels. We can’t forget our bushy-tailed friends who spend the majority of the seasons scurrying from tree to tree in search of acorns to munch on and, once the weather begins to turn chilly, store away for winter. My particular building is fairly set apart from the trees and shrubbery which line some of the other, more shaded areas of the complex; however,

as luck would have it, there happens to be one fairly large tree right in front of my apartment, with branches that - until recently - stretched nearly to my second-floor balcony. Every autumn, like clockwork, I would find hordes of acorns - piles, literally - on my deck each morning. Curious how they all happened to “fall” in this one area, I observed one particular squirrel as he made the rounds from branch to branch, fervently shaking each one until he had dislodged each and every nut. Some would fall down below, where he would eagerly gather them and begin digging holes to store them away; the rest, apparently, seemed to settle among my plants upstairs. Each day, I would sweep the acorns off the side of the deck and, peering over the railing, would see my little fuzzy visitor eagerly waiting to collect them. It became something of a routine, and I was only too happy to help him in his pursuit (and clear off my deck in the process). One morning, I awoke to the sound of buzzing and looked outside to see the landscape company trimming many of the trees and shrubs in the area, including “my” tree. Horrified, I looked at the now nearly-barren branches and wondered what had

become of my little fluffy-tailed companion. Was he swept away with the pile of discarded branches? Had he been permanently displaced from his chosen home? What had become of all the acorns he had yet to gather? Mildly concerned, I wondered if I would ever see him again. A few days passed, with still no sign. The next night, when I returned home from work, I decided to dine outside. It was one of those late Autumn evenings when the air was still mild and the sun had yet to set, casting a golden glow over all that the light touched. As I ate, I was startled by the sound of scurrying, and looked up to see my little fuzzy friend scampering up and down the emaciated tree, picking up the acorns that had fallen and galloping down the pathway to bury them in the tiny hole he had dug. I smiled, glad to see he was alright, despite his slightly-mangled home. Not quite a puppy, but a member of the adopted family nonetheless. A few weeks later, it seemed the acorns had all been accounted for. As I watered my mum plants, I saw something wedged between the flowers. Curious, I peered between the stems to find a single peanut shell. I guess this means he’s moving in for the winter.

Students were able to use their Chromebooks to access the library catalog and search for reading materials by title, author, subject, keyword or book series. As part of her presentation, she showed students pictures of the manual card catalogs that many adults used before automation, and how to bookmark the library webpage on their devices.

Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus has introduced a new way for students to stay fit. More than a dozen ninthgraders attended the first after-school workout of the Fitness Club on October 18th. The advisers, special education teacher Kathleen Wegener and speech therapist Trish DePalma, led a pound fitness workout. Students

used drumsticks and moved to music as they followed an exercise video that played on the Smart Board. The goal of the club is to provide students with an opportunity to engage in various activities that promote overall wellness. Upcoming meetings will include Zumba, aerobics and outdoor walks, and students will also learn how to make healthy

snacks. Fitness Club is open to all ninth-graders who are looking for ways to stay healthy and fit, but it also supports students in the Career and Community Connections program. They are each paired up with another Ames student during workouts as the motto of the club is “Exercise is more fun with a buddy.”

They met in kindergarten at McKenna Elementary School, and now Deborah Lobaccaro and Nicole Leonick are the top two graduates of Massapequa High School’s Class of 2018. Massapequa High School Principal Patrick DiClemente announced that Deborah has been named the valedictorian and Nicole the salutatorian. He recently had the pleasure of notifying the long-time friends who have had dozens classes together over the last 13 years. “We’ve been best friends since kindergarten, so it’s

really hard to believe that we accomplished this,” Nicole said. Deborah, with a gradepoint average of 100.4, is planning to study biomedical engineering in college and pursue a career in medical research. Nicole, whose 99.26 GPA ranked second, hopes to study pediatric medicine. She has performed community service at regional hospitals. The pair have been actively involved in academic and extracurricular life at Massapequa High School. They have both taken 12 Advanced Placement

courses and are members of the Poparazzi orchestra group in which Deborah plays the viola and Nicole the cello. Deborah is president of Students Against Destructive Decisions and a member of the National Honor Society, the Research Club and the cheerleading squad. She also volunteers with her church’s youth group. Nicole is president of the Research Club, treasurer of Best Buddies, co-captain of the rifle team, a leader in the Environmental Club and member the National and Spanish honor societies.

Learning Fire Safety October is Fire Prevention Month and the people in the community who know best about fire safety — volunteer firefighters — have been visiting elementary schools throughout the Massapequa School District to spread the word. On October 3rd, several members of the Massapequa Fire Department were at East Lake Elementary School

for a pair of fire safety assemblies. They talked about fire prevention in the home, the importance of smoke detectors and when to change the batteries, and how to devise an emergency escape plan. Several students were invited up to demonstrate stop, drop and roll. During each session, one teacher came up on stage to put on firefighter gear, including the boots,

pants, jacket and helmet, with the assistance of the volunteers. Students were given workbooks to write their home fire escape plan and draw a fire safety poster. The Fire Department will collect the poster entries later in the month and the district’s winner of the contest will receive a ride to school in a fire truck.

SEEING RED - Kathy Landman’s kindergartners at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District kicked off color week on September 25th with red day. All the children wore red to school, read “Clifford the Big Red Dog,” drew pictures of TASTY MATH LESSON - The kindergarten children of St. Rose of Lima School had apples and identified red objects throughout the classroom.
