Let me begin by stating that I have not been a college student for the better part of the last 13 years. That said, I still find myself enjoying some of the perks associated with being an alumna of one of our fine local institutions. It takes a bit of the sting out of being asked for ID when purchasing tickets to R-rated movies. Last year, I received a press invite for an intimate gathering of students at a Q&A with none other than Long Island’s own Billy Joel. Casual conversation, a few funny anecdotes, a verse from a song or two while seated at the piano - it was every fan’s dream to be in that audience of several hundred. The press, as it turned out, was asked to leave after the first 15 minutes of the event, to avoid the flash photography, videography and distraction often associated with a throng of media lined up in the back.

As cameramen and reporters were ushered out one by one, I received no more than a passing glance from the administrators in charge of “clearing” the area. Smartphone in hand, I tried to look as inconspicuous as possible until they had all gone. Once the coast was clear, I surveyed the remaining students to see them eagerly snapping photos and recording bits and pieces. Since no one had instructed that this was not allowed, I followed suit. The perks of being a “student,” indeed, if only for one day. This past week, I noticed a similar event upcoming, featuring former President Bill Clinton. Tickets ranged into the hundreds of dollars; but, in fine print, I noticed a line about complimentary tickets being available to students. Intrigued, I contacted the school to inquire if, perhaps, I might pass for a student once

more. I was told that, yes, this would be possible, and I could even be permitted in the press box as well. Once there, I determined that the so-called “press” was actually standing behind the row where I was to be seated, crammed in among the cameras on tripods, wiring and soundboards. About five minutes into the speaking engagement, I assessed the situation and gave up my special access in favor of a (somewhat) comfier seat down below. Once again, youth prevailed, granting me a better view of the action with none of the chaos. People have always said to me, you just wait - in a few years, you’ll be longing for the days when people thought you were so much younger… it’s a compliment, enjoy it while it lasts… Years later, I have to say, I’m beginning to see their point.

Reading & Recording Educational resources old and new were used in a literacy lesson at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Fourth-graders in Theresa LiCausi’s class used video technology to analyze their independent reading books. The project is just one way that teachers are taking advantage of the expansion of Massapequa’s one-to-one Chromebook initiative. Elementary students in third through fifth grades now have their own assigned devices which are kept in school. Ms. LiCausi had her

students use Flipgrid to make 90-second videos about the books they are reading. Children were asked to discuss what they liked and what they learned. “Independent reading is about what they want to read, now what they’re told to read,” she said. “They make connections and Flipgrid is a way for each child to have their own voice.” As students were making their videos, some were at their desks, others were gathered around a table and many were spread out on the floor. That’s what a

true Flipgrid community is, Ms. LiCausi said. The videos were shared on the class Haiku page for students and parents to view. The youngsters were asked to record responses to at least three of their classmates’ videos. Shawn Hillkewicz, who read “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw,” said he enjoyed the project because “I love sharing what I do with other people.” In his video, he talked about how he liked the beginning of the book and recounted some of the humorous moments.

Supporting Hurricane Relief

Several student organizations in the Massapequa School District banded together to help the victims of recent hurricanes. The Chiefs Challenge clubs at Massapequa High School’s main and Ames campuses combined to raise more than $700 for the American Red Cross to support those PLANNING FOR THE YEAR - Officers of the Woman’s Club of Massapequa met affected by Hurricane Harvey. Students sold packets of gum at the Bar Harbour Library recently to plan events for the 2017-2018 year. attached to index cards that read “Thanks for going the EXTRA miles for Hurricane Harvey victims.” At Berner Middle School, the Chiefs Challenge Club and Builders Club combined to raise more than $600 for hurricane relief efforts. During lunch periods, students in the Builders Club sold small bags of digital supplies to raise money for hurricane relief. The bags included a set of earbuds, a

small microfiber screen cloth and a touchscreen stylus pen. Funds raised by the Berner clubs and Comfy for a Cause, a collection taken by the Massapequa Federation of Teachers, will be donated to Team Rubicon, an organization that unites the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders to rapidly deploy emergency response teams.
