When Fairfield Elementary School Assistant Principal Dr. Kristi Gerhard and Curriculum Associate for World Languages and ENL William Anderson walked into a third grade classroom, students knew something big was about to happen. After all, Mr. Anderson was holding a large envelope. They were there to announce that Olivia Catalano was the Massapequa School District’s winner in the third annual

Foreign Language in the Elementary School folder contest. Her artwork will be on the cover of the folders that all third, fourth and fifth graders will use next year for their Spanish work. That’s more than 1,600 students at six elementary schools who will see Olivia’s creative piece during their twice-aweek language instruction. Olivia’s design includes different Spanish cultural symbols inside a heart with slogan “Mi Corazon

Español,” which translates to “My Spanish Heart.” She is a student in Laura Marks’ class and her FLES teacher is Luisa Marino. All third graders created submissions for the contest. One winner was chosen from each class, and then the FLES teachers selected building winners. Superintendent Lucille Iconis and Mr. Anderson then chose the folder cover from the six finalists.

Celebrating 25 Years This year marks the 25 year anniversary for American Black Belt Academy, located at 4875 Merrick Road in Massapequa. Started in 1994 by Tom and Lorraine LoVarco as a small modest Karate school located in Massapequa Park it has grown today to be one of the largest most diverse schools in the country. “We started in a small 900 square foot location were I taught all the classes and my wife Lorraine was the office manager,” says Tom LoVarco. Our enrollment began to grow quickly and our students were competing in National tournaments and doing very well. The school started to be recognized for producing top rated

competitors. Changing locations several times in the same area the size of the school is nearly 10 times larger than when it opened. And since opening, the facility has expanded into offering not only high quality American Kenpo classes for kids and adults but now offers a full fitness program, Kids BJJ and MMA, Kickboxing and a Martial Arts After School Program with transportation from all the schools in the Massapequa School District. A full day Martial Arts camp is even available during the summer. They also host two large Karate tournaments each year. Now joined by their children Chris and Danielle along with an amazing

staff of instructors and assistants the school is very organized and extremely professional. The location has 3 large classrooms that gives the ability to offer over 80 classes each week. Allowing for convenient class times and the detailed separation of ages and experience level. The story doesn’t end here. Plans for the future of American Black Belt are still in the making. Always looking for ways to improve services and to have a more positive impact on the lives of everyone that walks through their door. The next 25 years should be amazing! Did You Know? Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Meet Your Neighbor! South Shore School of Dance

Mary Douglas, owner of South Shore School of Dance, is celebrating her 35th anniversary of teaching. A mother of grown twins, she wanted to create a unique school where preschoolers receive the love, nurturing and encouragement that they needed, while older students benefit from her professional background and the “world class” training she is able to offer. The result is a very unique school, where

only mothers teach the very youngest children. A certified, registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance in London, Mrs. Douglas is included in a worldwide registry of outstanding teachers. In 1994, she was invited to Russia as part of an American delegation of the Royal Academy to visit the famous Vaganova Institute, training ground to such famous dancers as Mikhail Baryshnikov. While the majority of her students study dance for enjoyment, poise and exercise, she has produced scholarship winners. Emilia Thuma was accepted to the famous School of American Ballet, the training school for the New York City Ballet, received a generous scholarship to NYU for dance education and an academic assistance

scholarship to Hofstra. Sara Jansen received a full scholarship to the New York Theatre Ballet, and performed professionally in New York. Sara also danced with the American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center in Romeo and Juliet, and, in July 2004, was invited to dance with the Richmond Ballet in Virginia. The studio now competes regionally and nationally as well. Classes are offered in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop/ street dance, modern, Irish step, acro for boys and girls, musical theatre for boys and girls and Terrific Toddler Time for boys and girls.

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about or becoming involved with this organization, please contact them today.

In a statement from the Board of Water Commissioners, “South Farmingdale Water District’s continuing goal is to provide our customers with quality, dependable drinking water each and every day. We’re happy to announce that there are no violations of any drinking water standards. We encourage our consumers to request a copy of the report and share it with others.” The Board also added, “Our staff of water professionals follow strict procedures which contain quality control safeguards, including aggressive water sampling which is conducted weekly.” SFWD tests for over 300 compounds, including

all new and emerging contaminants. What this means to consumers is that the water that flows from the tap goes through the most rigorous testing in the industry. Nothing But Smiles Games, sports, and arts and crafts are among the many daily activities in the Massapequa School District’s summer recreation program, which is attended by hundreds of children from the six elementary schools. Approximately 125 middle school-age students are also participating in the

Teen Center program. In addition to the camp activities, there are field trips for bowling, laser tag, miniature golf, the movies, the pool and more. There have also been special events at the camps including live games shows and ceramics painting along with the annual carnival day filled with

activities such as bounce houses, dunk tanks, face painting and potato sack races. Each camp is supervised by a certified teacher with support from college assistants and high school counselors, who bring the children to the different activities and ensure they are all having fun.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board today announce a Remembrance Ceremony for the victims of the September 11, 2001 Attacks on America on Thursday, September 5th, beginning at 7 p.m. at TOBAY Beach. Additionally, at the ceremony, the Town will unveil the 9/11 Walls of Honor in memory of those

with a connection to the Town who tragically lost their lives to 9/11-related cancer and illnesses. The Town Board invites all residents, families and friends to attend. The Town’s 9/11 Memorial is inscribed with the names of residents lost on September 11, 2001. The Memorial features a steel beam recovered from the World Trade

Center. The September 5th ceremony includes a candlelight vigil, vocal performances, bagpipe music and religious readings. In addition, the names of those lost, who are inscribed on the wall, will be read and the new 9/11 Walls of Honor memorial will be unveiled along with a reading of the names of those featured on the Walls.
