Superintendent Lucille Iconis noted that the backdrop on each stage included six banners, one for each elementary school, connected by a curved blue line to symbolize the schools coming together to form one graduating class. She asked the students to thank their teachers and family members who have supported them. The ceremonies featured awards presentations, musical selections and photo slideshows. It also marked the last moving up programs for Lockhart Principal Stephen Scarallo and Fairfield Principal Lori Dano, who are both retiring.

School fifth grader Cassidy Benito said that she and her classmates have learned since kindergarten about the importance character. McKenna Elementary School Principal Dr. Amanda Lowry told students that the secret to their success was working together, and encouraged them to enter middle school with that same spirit of teamwork. East Lake Elementary School Assistant Principal Mary Velte did a little math, noting that it was 2,221 days from kindergarten orientation to the fifth grade moving up ceremony. She said that herself, Principal Thomas McKillop and the entire faculty and staff were so proud of their accomplishments during that time. After six years in elementary school, 518 now former fifth graders from the Massapequa School District are ready for the next step. Berner Middle School awaits the students, who were celebrated for their achievements at elementary moving up ceremonies from June 20 to 25. From learning to read, write, add and subtract in kindergarten, to completing research projects and engineering challenges as fifth graders, the students have grown by leaps and bounds during their elementary years. Mary Douglas, owner of South Shore School of Dance, is celebrating her 35th anniversary of teaching. A mother of grown twins, she wanted to create a unique school where preschoolers receive the love, nurturing and encouragement that they needed, while older students benefit from her professional background and the “world class” training she is able to offer. The result is a very unique school, where

only mothers teach the very youngest children. A certified, registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance in London, Mrs. Douglas is included in a worldwide registry of outstanding teachers. In 1994, she was invited to Russia as part of an American delegation of the Royal Academy to visit the famous Vaganova Institute, training ground to such famous dancers as Mikhail Baryshnikov. While the majority of her students study dance for enjoyment, poise and exercise, she has produced scholarship winners. Emilia Thuma was accepted to the famous School of American Ballet, the training school for the New York City Ballet, received a generous scholarship to NYU for dance education and an academic assistance

scholarship to Hofstra. Sara Jansen received a full scholarship to the New York Theatre Ballet, and performed professionally in New York. Sara also danced with the American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center in Romeo and Juliet, and, in July 2004, was invited to dance with the Richmond Ballet in Virginia. The studio now competes regionally and nationally as well. Classes are offered in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop/ street dance, modern, Irish step, acro for boys and girls, musical theatre for boys and girls and Terrific Toddler Time for boys and girls.

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 3 sessions will be on August 13th, 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. information. On August 16th at 6:30PM, The Social Brain is hosting a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association. This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. Additionally, on September 22nd all are welcome to come support this organization and enjoy an afternoon out at the ballpark with family and friends! The Social Brain is hosting a day at the ballpark to watch the Long Island Ducks game at 1:35PM. Tickets are $15.00 a person and parking is free. There will be a pre-game autograph session with all players on the field and children will be able to run the bases post game. Lastly, the Social Brain is available to attend group meetings to speak about head injury prevention. Topics can include mental health prevention, drug abuse, bike/wheeled safety, sport safety, concussions, anti-bullying and asking for help when needed. Free Skin Cancer Screening Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced a partnership with Northwell Health to host a Free Skin Cancer Screening on Friday, August 9th, from 12pm - 2pm at Marjorie Post Community Park, located on Merrick Road in Massapequa. This free skin cancer screening places the health and wellness of residents as a priority throughout the dog days of summer, following the successful installation of free sunscreen dispensers all Town pools and beaches, as well as the golf course, which had also been provided by Northwell Health. “We’re so proud to partner with Northwell Health throughout the summer to protect the health and wellness of our residents from the potential dangers of prolonged exposure to the sun without the proper preventative measures. This free

skin cancer screening provides an opportunity for residents to receive a free skin examination performed by a boardcertified dermatologist,” said Supervisor Saladino. “This awareness and outreach program further promotes a mindfulness of the potential dangers of increased sun exposure.” The Free Skin Cancer Screening will be conducted at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa by the dedicated and qualified staffs of Plainview Hospital and Syosset Hospital. Screenings will be performed on a first-come, first-serve basis (no appointments required or accepted) and residents are encouraged to come dressed appropriately for the event (wearing bathing suit and flip flops). Screening participants must be age 18 or older. Supervisor Saladino added, “Sunscreen is

extremely important as skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States.
