Going Above and Beyond Teachers provide many things to their students. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-of-pocket. According to a poll of 1,500 teachers conducted by the educational resource Edutopia, 93 percent of teachers feel obligated or somewhat obligated to buy school supplies for their

classrooms with their own money. The Education Market Association says that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies. The amounts spent annually can be upwards of $1,000 per teacher. In addition, not all of the teachers funding supplies work in low-income districts. A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that

many states now provide less financial support per student than they did before the recession took hold roughly nine years ago. Districts forced to work under tight budgets are increasingly outsourcing the costs of supplies to parents. When parents fail to provide supplies, teachers are bearing the brunt of the costs to avoid seeing their students go without necessary resources.

New Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board this week announced the opening of a new Planning and Development Satellite Office in Town Hall South to assist residents with building permit applications. The Supervisor further announced a new SameDay-Permit program available at both locations for a variety of projects. Supervisor Joseph Saladino stated, “On day one, Commissioner Maccarone and I set out to revamp the Planning and Development Department to better assist the residents of our town. Accordingly, homeowners seeking building permits for a multitude of projects can now visit either Town Hall North or South, and those seeking certain approvals can walk out of Town Hall the very same day with their approved permit. This is a win-win for residents seeking to improve their home and get contractors to work right away.” Under the SameDay-Permit program, residents can receive

permits for a number of projects, including fencing, swimming pools, air conditioning units, permanent generators, plumbing, and solar panel systems, to name a few. Applications that are found to require a variance will be given the necessary paperwork from the Planning and Development Department so they may immediately begin the process of seeking approvals from the Zoning Board of Appeals. “Government should not be the obstacle for residents who wish to get started on a simple home improvement. I’m proud to join Supervisor Saladino in announcing the Town’s Same-DayPermit program and in opening this new Satellite Office in Massapequa,” added Councilman Louis Imbroto. “I thank the Supervisor for his commitment to revamping Town government and making it work for the people of Oyster Bay.” Councilman Imbroto further added that residents have until the end of the year to take advantage of the Town’s Building Permit

Amnesty Program, which was designed to allow residents to obtain the necessary permits required on building improvements previously done to their homes, without incurring stringent penalties. The program runs through December 31st, 2017. “With many families having two working parents and little time to visit Town Hall, I’m happy we can assist residents seeking to update their homes with the convenience of SameDay-Permits and offices on both the north and south shores of our town,” Supervisor Saladino added. The Oyster Bay Department of Planning and Development is located at Town Hall, 74 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay, and the new Satellite Office is now open at Town Hall South Annex, located at 977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa. Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace ecofriendly practices. But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the classroom. One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school. Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards and notebooks for classroom lessons. Shootout for Soldiers

New Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently hosted “Shootout for Soldiers” a 24-Hour Lacrosse Game Benefit at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Field of Dreams. The Shootout for Soldiers is an annual 24 hour lacrosse event that benefits veterans and active duty military personnel. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Shootout for Soldiers is a terrific game that provides local lacrosse players a chance to enjoy a sport

they love in a unique way while also raising funds to benefit the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces.” The charitable funds raised at Shootout for Soldiers will benefit the Semper Fi Fund, the Ranger Lead the Way Fund, the Gary Sinise Foundation and the Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Fund. This year, approximately $127,000 was raised in support of organizations that benefit our troops. In addition,

the Long Island Air Force Association conducted a special ceremony to honor Vietnam veterans and present them with medals that commemorate their service in the conﬂict. Hope Breslin, a 2017 graduate of Massapequa High School, was named the 2017 Girls Soccer Athlete of the Year by the National High School Coaches Association. A funny thing happened on my last trip to the beach; rather, several amusingly bizarre things that left my friend and I shaking our heads in bewilderment and wondering if we were, in fact, part of some sort of candid camera exposé. On this particular afternoon, we literally sailed along the Robert Moses Causeway, over all three bridges, and were parked in less than 30 minutes - a record-breaking feat, to be sure, and a far improvement over the recent painstakingly slow bumper-to-bumper expeditions we have had to contend with. Amazed at this fortunate turn of events, we began to unload the car and make our way to the sand, when we noticed the deafening silence. Usually, the beach is filled with the sounds of children laughing and playing, radios blasting a cacophony of musical notes, the waves crashing against the shoreline… but on this particular afternoon, there was only silence. It was as if we had entered a parallel universe, a bubble of tranquility. Once we settled in, I noticed the enormous number of seagulls who seemed to be hovering nearby, taking off and landing a bit too close

for comfort. Just as I was thinking this one particular winged creature appeared to be launching its flight awfully low to the ground, my friend burst into laughter as he barely cleared her head. “He literally just hit me in the head!” she exclaimed. “I just felt his feet running across my hair!” From Candid Camera to Alfred Hitchcock, in a matter of minutes. After an hour or so of baking in the hot sun, we decided to embark on our regular trek toward the Lighthouse in search of seashells, and of course that picture perfect shot of the waves crashing onto the shore. This time, I decided to make it my mission to collect several dozen oyster shells in order to create a heart-shaped work of art in the sand. About one hour, and several ocean wipeouts of my masterpiece later, we decided to head back. Now generally, after a lengthy absence, it is perfectly normal to find our blanket surrounded by new neighbors, or perhaps none, as the beach tends to begin to empty in the late afternoon sun. This time, we were greeted by a man, sitting in a single chair, surrounded by about a half dozen assorted beach bags,

coolers and folding chairs - and an umbrella… one giant umbrella, staked right at the edge of my blanket, engulfing our entire area in complete shadow. I contemplated asking him to join us; then settled on politely asking him to move, as I hadn’t come to the beach to share his umbrella. He stared at me blankly, expressionless. Then, without a word, he slowly, deliberately got up and moved his umbrella - about half an inch. Completely bewildered, my friend and I exchanged a look. Was he serious? Were we the only people who understood the concept of personal boundaries? An entire field of sand, and here we were fighting over one square foot of space. Flabbergasted, we decided to gather our things and move slightly up the beach, to a completely empty expanse devoid of rogue umbrellas, seagulls and any other potential pitfalls. As we settled into this new spot, we were startled by the sound of people squealing and turned to see our old area now engulfed by the high tide. And there, in the middle of the surf, sat our old friend and his umbrella.

Summer Sights and Sounds More than 300 students are exploring their artistic talents through the Massapequa School District’s Summer Fine Arts program. The fiveweek camp features classes in the visual arts, instrumental music and musical theater. Beginner level band and orchestra classes are open to students who will be playing an instrument with their school ensemble for the first time in September. Incoming fourth-graders made their selections in June and during the summer are learning how to unpack and set up their instruments, proper position and posture, reading notes and playing simple songs like “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” “You get an extra head start on what you’re going to learn during the year,” said McKenna Elementary School fourth-grader Reese Resustle, who selected the cello because

her father played it as a youngster. “I’m excited to play for him.” Advanced level music classes include more challenging pieces for students who already have completed a least one year of instruction. Band teacher Gary Locke designs his course around student input. “The songs we play are 100 percent their decisions,” he said. “They get to pick what they want to do.” Twins Erin and Kathleen Tumminello, who will be entering eighth grade, are in the acoustic guitar class with music teacher Tom Tucker. “I’m enjoying everything about this course,” Kathleen said. “I went from not knowing how to play the guitar at all to being decent at it in just two weeks.” A Celtic fiddling class is new to the program this year, led by music teacher

Katherine Cahalan. Students are learning traditional Irish songs such as “Swallowtail Jig.” Incoming sixth-grader Cormac Hale, who already has experience with string instruments, said he took the class to learn about music that is part of his heritage. Visual arts classes are giving students exposure to several different mediums. They created still-life paintings, selfportraits and scrapbooks in the painting and drawing class, and plates and bowls in ceramics. The iPad Claymation course combines traditional art skills with technology as children create their own movies using stop-motion animation. Other classes this summer include jewelry making, decorative arts, watercolor techniques and art history.
