Students swiftly crossed the stage, shaking hands with members of the Board of Education and Central Administration who congratulated them as they received their diplomas. Silver & Gold Ratings Five musical ensembles from the Massapequa School District were awarded high ratings for musical proficiency at the 2015 New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Major Organization Festival. Out of a rating system that included the following categories: Certificate of Participation, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Gold with

Distinction, Massapequa took home three Silver ratings, one Gold and one Gold with Distinction after the ensembles were evaluated by a panel of two judges that provided constructive comments and assessments based on specific performance criteria. The highest honor, Gold with Distinction, was awarded to the

Massapequa High School Wind Ensemble, which performed the highest level of music, level 6, under the direction of Mark Stempel. A Gold rating was given to Lockhart Elementary School’s Band after its level 1 performance led by Kristin Hodulick. Silver ratings went to Berner Middle School’s Seventh-Grade Band, under Ronald Basirico’s

direction and EighthGrade Band, led by Dennis McLoughlin, which performed at levels 2 and 3, respectively. The third Silver rating was given to Massapequa High School’s Symphonic Band, which performed a level 4 arrangement under the

direction of Andrew Dwork. “These ratings underscore the quality of our music program and staff, and speak to the commitment and dedication of our students who have worked so hard throughout the year to improve their skills,”

STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL - Massapequa’s Strawberry Festival 2015 was a great success in spite of the rain. The Historical Society of Massapequa hosted the annual event to raise awareness in the community and remind residents of the history that Massapequa holds. All local vendors were welcome, as long as they were selling handmade or home-made items. The first week of the 2015 Town of Oyster Bay “Music Under the Stars” concert series kicks off with global superstar, Bret Michaels performing at John J. Burns Town Park, Merrick Road, Massapequa, on Tuesday, July 7th. Having risen to fame as the front man of successful rock band Poison, Bret Michaels has turned his passion for music into a multi-faceted brand encompassing record breaking touring sales, legendary songs, and reality TV stardom. Ode To The E Train By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let me begin by saying that I absolutely love New York City. And by New York City, I mean Manhattan. None of this five boroughs nonsense. The City is one borough, in my estimation. Traveling to it, well that’s another animal entirely. Trains are all well and good, when they’re running on time. Or aren’t derailed by some vague “track condition” west of Jamaica. At rush hour. Of course, this particular scenario occurred during the one time – literally, one and only time – I attempted to commute into Manhattan during the evening rush. Everything was on or close to schedule, until it wasn’t. And then came the crackling,

completely unintelligible announcement over the train’s PA system, mumbling something about “apologize for the inconvenience” and “all passengers must disembark.” My friend and I looked at each other incredulously. This is why we don’t commute to work in the city, seemed to be the simultaneous thought. As we made our way to the exit, passing row upon row of oblivious passengers who apparently hadn’t heard – or comprehended – the command to exit, the mass confusion was evident. Now what? Where do we go? What do we do? Subway. Ugh. Here’s the thing. I am perfectly capable of picking a train line, determining which stop to get off at, which platform to wait on… but

DISABLED DISABLED CHILDREN CHILDREN AND AND VETERANS VETERANS Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC Area.

Valhalla is 34’ long 12’ 3” wide, a very stable boat that has plenty of room for both wheelchairs and passengers with a wide transom door and a hardtop enclosure for protection from the elements.

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Stony Brook patients such as Maritza McGee, 45, an acute myeloid leukemia patient who received a bone marrow transplant, and Carmen Cali, 62, a patient treated for multiple myeloma for 10 years who has undergone two bone marrow transplants, stood out as rays of hope for the many Stony Brook patients still undergoing treatment. McGee, Cali and the hundreds of other survivors enjoyed the day, the comradery and unity they all shared, and the outdoor festivities for all – survivors, family, friends, and the Stony Brook Cancer Center physicians, nurses and staff.

Advancing To Middle School Filled with excitement and pride, sixthgraders throughout the Massapequa School District transitioned from elementary to middle school during moving-up ceremonies that showcased their achievements. Principals and district MASSAPEQUA VAL & SAL - Congratulations to Massapequa High School’s administrators offered Valedictorian Vincent Coghill and Salutatorian Bridget Keegan. words of praise about

student accomplishments and advice on what to expect in the middle school, while student speakers shared stories of their fondest memories and lessons they learned from their teachers. Some ceremonies also featured slideshows that captured memories of the students’ elementary years and

musical performances. In addition to their moving-up certificates, students received a host of awards, including the Perfect Attendance Award, the President’s Award for Educational Excellence and the President’s Award for Educational Achievement. Congratulations!

I spent a lifetime probing and searching For things about which the critiques sing, Like fantasies, facts truth or lie; So for today, I chose the Fourth of July. Around the world I many times flew, Skimming the firmament when gray turned to blue. In many places I have been, The Seven Wonders I have seen. I socialized with the poor and the rich, Visited the Taj Mahal and the London Bridge. Year after year on Independence Day, I joined into the cheers and firework play.

Finally now having reached advanced age, I found what all along I had wanted to stage. With my mind open though my body remiss, I wish that you all experience this day’s bliss.
