The Greatest Honor “I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.” ~ Douglas Adams As I sat in the audience at the recent Press Club of Long Island awards ceremony last week, intently listening to the words of one of our Hall of Fame honorees, the legendary writer and reporter Harvey Aronson, I was struck by the notion that one could choose a particular career to pursue and, so many years later {at the tender age of 89}, remain just as devoutly passionate about it. As he eloquently put it, “I wanted to be a writer… and so I became one.” The simplest sentiments are often the most poignant. In addition to his illustrious career as a groundbreaking journalist, Harvey has also devoted quite a number of

Dr. David Gaines arrived in Massapequa in 1986 as the high school band director, and has served as the curriculum associate for music since 2008. During his tenure, the district has consistently been named as one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation. Susan Thompson joined the district in 1998, working in the business office and as a computer teacher assistant at
McKenna Elementary School before being named technology chairwoman. In her position, she supervised business and technology education, family and consumer sciences and driver education. In anticipation of Alaska and Hawaii becoming states, Heft personally designed and sewed a 50 star flag as part of a H.S. history project. His teacher gave him a B- on his project. Heft went on to send his flag to his Ohio Congressman, Walter Moeller, for consideration of becoming the new United States National Flag. It is said that President Dwight D. Eisenhower personally called Heft to inform him that he had chosen his flag design over 1,500 other applicants to be the new U.S. Flag! Additionally, seven staff members received tenure. Retiring staff members included administrators, teachers, teacher assistants, nurses, secretaries, custodians and monitors, who careers in the district began as far back as 1979. Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis and Board of Education President Timothy Taylor thanked them for their service to Massapequa students. The district honored three retiring administrators. The Association for Mental Health & Wellness
The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups, and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries. If you or someone you know
is struggling with a mental health issue, don’t hesitate to contact this non-profit. They truly believe mental health is as important as physical health. MHAW is very excited about its 6th annual Kick Stands Up event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd at the Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Lasting from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., this motorcycle, poker run and car show will benefit at-risk and homeless veterans of the Suffolk County United Veterans Project. All who attend will receive breakfast and the chance to win prizes throughout the day. The entry fee for motorcycles and cars is $20; for walk-ins, it is $5 and for children under 12, it is free. classes offered at Ames include Studio in Art, Studio in Art New Media and Creative Crafts. Display boards were filled with self-portrait drawings, paintings of food, animals and nature, and sketches of backpacks, and tables were covered in 3D projects including tiedyed hats, painted masks and park plan models. Many projects included a digital component. Art
show visitors were able to view student-made stop motion movies on iPads. Student Juliana Dispigno said she enjoyed mixed media projects. She drew animal eyes creating part of the project digitally, and the rest using graphite and colored pencils. “It was really fun using the iPads,” she said. “It was different from traditional art and we learned how to use different apps to draw.”
Ryan Rosenfeld added that he enjoyed seeing the variety of different projects on display at the art show and looking at the work made by his fellow ninthgraders. In reflecting on the year, what most stood out for Ryan was greater freedom in choosing how to complete each assignment.

Massapequa Takes Action Coalition recently joined with Massapequas’ Senior Citizens at the McKenna Senior Center to celebrate National Prevention Week (NPW). The annual weeklong observance serves to increase public awareness and promote substance abuse prevention across the nation. The Massapequa Senior Citizen Center members learned about opioid misuse in the Massapequas as well as how and why they should secure, monitor and dispose of prescription drugs – especially opioids (pain medications). Opioids are a class of drugs that include the illegal drug heroin, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, and pain relievers available legally by prescription, such as oxycodone (OxyContin®), hydrocodone (Vicodin®), codeine, morphine, and many others. In the Massapequas, 71% of young adults who misuse prescription drugs get them from the medicine cabinets of friends and family. MTAC

Local Grad
This 54-week pilot training program begins with a six-week preflight phase of academics and physical training to prepare students for flight. The second phase, primary training, is conducted in the single-engine, turboprop T-6A Texan II. Primary training takes approximately 23 weeks
and includes 254 hours of ground instruction, 27 hours in the flight simulator and 89 hours in the T-6A aircraft. After primary training, students select, by order of merit, advanced training in the fighter-bomber or airlift-tanker track. Training for the fighter track is done in the T-38C
Talon, a tandem-seat, twin-engine supersonic jet. The airlift-tanker track uses the T-1A Jayhawk, the military version of a multi-place Beech Jet 400 business jet. Both tracks are approximately 26 weeks and are designed to best train pilots for successful transition to their followon aircraft and missions. Unruh is the son of Matthew and Kevin Unruh of Massapequa Park, and Roseanne Unruh of West Islip. He is a 2012 graduate of Massapequa High School, Massapequa Park, N.Y. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 2015 from Suny Farmingdale, Farmingdale.
HEALTH & WELLNESS FAIR - Local legislators recently joined with Massapequa School District Superintendent Lucille Iconis at Drug Free Long Island’s Health and Wellness Day, held at Marjorie R. Post Community Park. Drug Free Long Island unites communities to strengthen awareness, advocacy and education to combat substance abuse throughout Long Island.
MASSAPEQUA CELEBRATES MEMORIAL DAY - Local legislators recently joined with local scouts, residents, veterans and other elected officials at the Massapequa Memorial Day Parade. The parade was a joint collaboration between American Legion Post #1066 and the Sgt. Peter F. Colleran VFW Post #7763, to honor and remember the men and women who have served and continue to protect our country.
MINI PARADE - Children in Massapequa High School’s preschool program, along with their high school buddies, marched in their own Memorial Day parade outside of the building on May 24th. The children wore their customized T-shirts with bald eagle designs made from their handprints, while wearing patriotic sunglasses and playing instruments such as drums, tambourines and the cymbals. See Think Wonder exercise in which they examined a picture of a stop sign surrounded by hardened black lava and then shared their observations and their curiosities. She said that the picture was recently taken in a neighborhood in Hawaii. As she met with each class, children gathered around a plastic volcano
model and mixed vinegar, baking soda, hand soap and food coloring to simulate an eruption. The students “oohed” and “aahed” as the foamy red liquid spilled over the sides. For a follow-up activity, children colored and decorated their own volcanoes using colored pencils, red string and red and gold metallic strips of paper.
Admins Appointed Massapequa High School Ames Campus Principal Jordan McCaw has been named the executive director of pupil personnel services for the Massapequa School District, effective July 1. Tania Willman, the executive assistant to the principal at Ames, will become the principal. Mr. McCaw began working for the district in September 2003 and spent nine years as an English teacher at Massapequa High School’s main and Ames campuses. He served three years as the supervisor for secondary special education and one year as executive assistant to the principal at the main campus before becoming principal of Ames in 2016. In his new position, Mr. McCaw will oversee the district’s special education department as
well as student support services at all nine schools, which includes guidance, psychology, social work and speech. He succeeds Jean Castelli, who is retiring. “I am grateful for this incredible opportunity, this awesome responsibility and exciting challenge of working with the pupil personnel services team to advance our department by providing all students with the programs, supports and skills they need in order to meet with success,” he said. “One of my personal goals for the 2018-19 school year will be to expand the lines of communication with families in order to engage them as partners in important conversations about how we can work together to build an even stronger foundation for the students we serve.”
Ms. Willman becomes principal of the high school’s ninth-grade campus, after serving the last eight years as the executive assistant to the principal. Prior to that, she was a social studies teacher from 2002 to 2010 at Massapequa High School. Before becoming an educator, she worked in the private sector as a senior systems analyst and business analyst. “With much excitement and great pride, I look forward to serving as the next principal of Massapequa High School Ames Campus,” Ms. Willman said. “I am genuinely grateful for the opportunity I have been afforded, and I am eager to continue working and growing in partnership with all stakeholders of our school community.”

the Massapequa School District recently raised baby ducks. Incubators were delivered to the three classrooms and students learned about duck embryology. After four weeks, the eggs hatched and children named the ducks. In Regina Birney’s class, children chose the name Wilbur, based on the book “Charlotte’s Web,” for the runt of the litter. Students kept journals to record the different stages of duck development. They learned how to care for the animals and bonded with their new fuzzy friends, even taking them for walks in the grass outside the school. Independence Day Parade
This 5 kilometer race is always a highlight during the summer season. Registration forms can be picked up at Village Hall. Check-in is at Brady Park from 2:00pm to 4:30pm on the day of the race. The Mayor will start the race on Park Boulevard just North of Clark Boulevard at 5:00pm. The race will continue on Park Boulevard, enter Mansfield Park at Walker Street and proceed south on the bike path to Clark Boulevard, continuing to the finish line at Lakeshore Drive at Brady Park. Awards will be presented to the first male and female finishers from Massapequa Park in addition to other awards.

The Winter seemed like it would never end! It came in like a lamb and went out like a lion. We endured four Nor’easters to end the season, had a January blizzard and then went into a deep freeze. I would like to publicly praise our Department of Public Works as well as our entire staff for a job well done. For the second year in a row, I am happy to report to you that we were able to produce a budget with a ZERO tax increase. The budget is a collaborative effort between the Board of Trustees, the Clerk-Treasurer’s office and the heads of various departments in the Village. This year, as in the past few years, we saw a record number of building permits filed, which is a sign of a strong economy. It is so nice to see residents make improvements to their properties. These improvements, and our well-maintained properties show our community pride and makes the Village a very desirable place to live.

Over the past year, we have welcomed many new merchants into the Village with more to come. Our business district is thriving with new businesses looking to be part of our success. It is you, our residents, which have made our Village such a great place to live, shop and dine. I hear so many stories of generation after generation wanting to stay in our Village. They stay here because of our great traditions and the home town feeling. Events such as Irish Night, Breakfast in the Park, the Fire Cracker Run, Fireworks and parades make it all the more enjoyable. In the coming weeks, you will see the beginning of this year’s road projects. We will be paving many roads and installing handicapped ramps. The improvements to our infrastructure will continue every year. As reported in my state of the Village, this year we were able to save Colleran Park, a beautiful park on the bay that was disappearing due to erosion. If you never experienced the beautiful views of the Great South Bay from Colleran, I invite you to do so. The improvements we made will ensure future generations will enjoy the park. Curbside Yard Waste Recycling Collections On Thursday Yard waste which consists of grass clippings, weeds, leaves, tree trimmings/branches/twigs, hedge and shrub clippings, small roots and other garden/yard waste are now collected by the Town of Oyster Bay Sanitation crews on Thursday. Regular S.O.R.T. crews will collect the contents of your recycling pail, newspapers, junk mail, etc. Sanitation crews will come around the same day to collect yard waste. As a reminder Tuesday and Friday are the regular Sanitation collection days.
Tree Program Mayor Jeffrey Pravato and the Board of Trustees are pleased to announce the continuance of the Village Curbside Tree Program. Anyone who applied previously must renew his or her application in order to remain eligible for occupancy. Whitewood Landing is a Senior Housing Complex located on Whitewood Drive in Massapequa Park. Under the Village’s guidelines, applications will be accepted each August and the waiting list is updated to allow residents of Massapequa Park with the longest length of residency to be eligible for these units. Pool Information With pool season upon us, pool safety is an important concern of all residents. To ensure safety in and around pools, residents should be aware of the following Village ordinances: • All pools must be equipped with removable or retractable-type ladders or steps for entering or leaving the pool. When not in use, the ladders must be removed, and/or locked in the upward position. • A fence must completely surround the area in which the pool is located and be structurally sound. • Access gates shall be self-closing and have a self-latching device. Access gates shall open outward away from the pool. • All doors with direct access to the pool area shall be equipped with an alarm. Questions concerning any of the above may be directed to the Building Department at 798-0244 ext. 120. Residents are reminded that any operation or use of pneumatic hammers, chainsaws, leaf blowers, power washers or to engage in any other building operation causing loud or unusal noises anywhere in the Village of Massapequa Park is allowed only during the hours of 8:00 am through 7:30 pm Monday through Friday, 9:00 am through 7:00 pm on Saturdays and no work permitted on Sundays.

We are a Passport Acceptance Facility. Applications for passports will be accepted Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. VILLAGE TAXES DUE
Residents are reminded that Village Taxes are due no later than July 2nd. New residents should verify that tax bills are being sent to the proper party. Also, residents who recently satisfied their mortgage or refinanced should contact Village Hall to ensure that tax bills are addressed properly. Questions concerning Taxes may be referred to 798-0244 ext. 117 or 115.
DUMPSTERS/BUILDING MATERIALS
Residents are reminded that a permit is necessary to place a dumpster and/or building materials in public streets. The permit requires a $500 cash bond and the charge is $25 per day the dumpster/building materials remain in the street. Questions may be referred to Resident Services at 798-0244 ext. 113.
POOL EMPTYING
When emptying your pool, the water should be disposed of on your property and prevented from flowing onto any adjacent property or over any abutting street. If this is not possible, you may apply for a permit to discharge into the municipal storm drain. Any discharge MUST be clean and free of odor and pollutants. Call Public Works at 798-0244 ext. 122 for further information.

LANDSCAPERS
...in the Village of Massapequa Park must be licensed with the Village and are required to abide by all Village parking regulations and ordinances. Landscapers cannot perform work earlier than 8:00 am on weekdays and 9:00 am on Saturdays with no work permitted on Sundays. Additionally, landscapers must dispose of all grass clippings when leaving the site of the job. Please inform Resident Services at 798-0244 ext. 113 if landscapers are not abiding by these regulations.
SKATEBOARDS AND BICYCLES
Village Ordinance prohibits riding skateboards, bicycles or similar devices on sidewalks in the Village business districts. Bicycles must be placed in bicycle racks so as not to obstruct pedestrian traffic on sidewalks. 345587DN0613

For her commitment to language learning, Hayley Tan, an eighth-grader at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, was presented with the Philip A. Fulvi Love of Language Merit Award by the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers. She was nominated by her Spanish teacher, Janice Kincaid. The award is presented to students who achieve a high grade point average
in their World Language classes and demonstrate a strong interest in the language. Hayley is a student in Ms. Kincaid’s Spanish level 1 accelerated class. Of the four foreign languages offered at Berner Middle School, Hayley said she chose Spanish because it is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. She added that she hopes to have more opportunities in the future to use her Spanish

language skills. “I feel it is important to learn another language because it helps people connect throughout the world,” she said. “Although English is a very commonly used language, it is not the only one that people speak. Being bilingual, trilingual or even multilingual, allows someone to talk with more people, and it provides new opportunities that one may not have otherwise.”
East Lake Elementary School third-graders are connecting with peers nearly 400 miles away. Taking advantage of the Massapequa School District’s 1:1 Chromebook initiative, the youngsters are using technology to learn about other thirdgraders in Steuben, Maine. The students have been making Flipgrid videos
through the GridPals initiative, which connects children digitally all over the world. The class of 10 students in a small school in Steuben created the first set of videos. At East Lake, Annette Ready’s students then recorded their responses, talking about their school and their town, sharing their hobbies and personal interests, and

asking questions of their video penpals. Technology learning coach Louisa Vecchione said the two classes were connected through Flipgrid. The goal is to have the students continue to communicate for the remainder of the school year.

Grant Awarded The First Congregational Church Early Learning Center was recognized by the faculty, staff and students of Long Island Lutheran Middle and High School with a grant from the Lutheran Crusader Fund during a special on-campus service on Wednesday, April 5th. Provided by an anonymous donor in 1998,
a generous $1 million contribution enabled LuHi, located in Brookville, to establish a Crusader Fund. The focus of the LCF is the creation and enhancement of innovative programs that benefit Christian institutions and support people and organizations in times of significant crisis or need. To date, over $1,825 has been awarded
to over 520 deserving organizations through LCF. The FCC Early Learning Center is a year-round Day Care Center serving children of the surrounding communities, ages 6 weeks to 5 years-old. The students come from homes with single parents and limited income families. The grant received from LCF will
be used to create an age appropriate greenspace for toddlers in their care. The current play space was created for children who are 3, 4 and 5 years-old and is not currently age appropriate for toddlers. The new greenspace will include new surfacing and age-appropriate equipment, which will insure the safety and well
being of the toddlers, as well as create new learning opportunities for the children. Locaetd on a 32-acre campus in Brookville, Long Island Lutheran Middle and High School is a Christ-centered, college preparatory school whose mission is to educate its students in body, mind and spirit. Recognized by

After learning about simple machines such as levels and pulley, fourthgraders at Fairfield Elementary School constructed their own. Each student brought in items from home to create a machine that would make a task easier. Among the creations were a snack launcher,
a food dipper, and egg cracker and a balloonpowered bulldozer to clean up Legos. Among the materials that students used were cardboard tubes and boxes, Popsicle sticks, plastic bottles, string and pencils. Students spent two days designing their machines and sketching out their

Learning Made Simple plans before they started building. There was a lot of trial and error as students tested their machines, evaluated their performance and fixed any flaws. Teacher Amy Stapleton said the young engineers learned how to take an idea for an invention and turn it into a reality.
DANCING IN STEP - To learn about incorporating movement with music, fourthand fifth-graders at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District have been practicing Tinikling, a traditional folk dance from the Philippines. Led by music teacher Gina Aspetti, the students have been experiencing both parts: the dancers and the bamboo pole movers.
