Oyster Bay Town Clerk Rich LaMarca reminds residents of the availability of the Town’s Green Pass Beach Parking Permit for eligible Town residents who drive clean pass eligible vehicle. In order to qualify for the Green Pass Beach Parking Permit, which comes at no cost to eligible residents, the hybrid or alternative vehicle must be clean pass eligible. “As the weather gets warmer and with residents no doubt looking towards the summer season, my office is reminding residents that as a way of rewarding those who already have chosen ‘green energy’ vehicles, and to further encourage others to do so, the Town offers free ‘green’ permits for parking permits at the Town beaches,” Town Clerk LaMarca said. “Our environment is one of our most precious resources, and I am proud to offer this incentive to Town

Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a nonproﬁt organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal ﬁnancial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. All of the services Hope House Ministries offers are FREE! This includes housing, supportive professional services, counseling, healthcare, insurance, transportation, food, clothing and opportunities for education both for both high school, college or trade school. When explained to those new to their agency, few believe it possible. Many question how they are able to stay open. The three most popular programs that HHM runs are their Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary, Montfort Therapeutic Residences and Pax Christi, their Emergency Shelter. See below for more information on each of these programs. Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary: In response to the opioid crisis, HHM

acquired Little Portion Friary in Mount Sinai in 2016 as a means of increasing their ability to serve more young men struggling with opioid addiction. This program assists in the development of a life plan with short and long term goals. It also promotes the development of interpersonal skills. The length of stay varies based on need, averaging 12-18 months. Each person is treated individually by professional clinical staff. Montfort Therapeutic Residences: This is an intensive therapeutic treatment facility for children ages 11-18 who find themselves caught in the family court system. These children come to them at a time of great crisis in their young lives. Montfort Therapeutic provides the young residents with a healthy, stable environment, a school program, individual counseling, group dynamics and educational recreational outings. The program also includes aftercare services for children returning home. Pax Christi: This emergency shelter offers guests who are homeless a safe alternative to the streets. Pax Christi offers case management, drug and alcohol counseling, mental health counseling, linkages to benefits and resources in the community, as well as the basics of food and shelter. Over 50 active volunteers assist with cleaning, making beds, painting, serving meals and providing food and clothing for guests. HHM is truly a selfless and heartwarming non-profit right here on Long Island. No one should ever feel that they need to suffer alone, that they are not being heard, that they can’t ask for help or that they are hopeless. Town Honors 850 Frontline Healthcare Heroes During Hospital Week COVID-19 pandemic. To commemorate the key role they continue to play throughout this pandemic, we are so proud to present these Healthcare Heroes with a Town of Oyster Bay TOB Strong Frontline Hero Pin to wear as a keepsake and a reminder of all the amazing things they’ve done during one of the most trying times in our Town’s history!” With May 9th through 15th marking National Hospital Week, Town officials saw it a fitting opportunity to highlight health systems and health care workers and the innovative ways they are supporting the needs of their community members, especially during the pandemic. “We are forever indebted to our healthcare professionals as they

continue to battle the COVID-19 pandemic on the frontline,” said Councilman Hand. “It’s important for us to let our courageous doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals know that they and their sacrifices have not been forgotten.” In addition to presenting all staff members with pins, officials also presented ‘thank yous’ from submitted by residents as part of the Town’s Healthcare Hero Recognition Program. In April, the Town invited residents to submit ‘thank you’ notes, cards and letters to be distributed to healthcare professionals, reminding them of the gratitude people feel toward all they have contributed throughout the pandemic.

Massapequa Schools Raise Autism Awareness Elementary schools in the Massapequa School District celebrated everyone’s unique qualities for Autism Awareness Month in April while also educating students about the disorder that affects an estimated 1 in 54 children nationwide. On April 30 at McKenna Elementary School, administrators, teachers and staff wore shirts with an image of a puzzle piece and a heart along with the message, “Love Needs No Words.” The puzzle piece is the symbol used to represent the mystery and complexity of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Throughout April, first graders in Melanie Kane’s class discussed how everyone is special because of their differences. Students identified the

traits that make them unique and learned the importance of accepting others for who they are. They ended the month with an autism awareness coloring activity to serve as a visual reminder of those important messages. Fairfield Elementary School took part in the international Light It Up Blue campaign for autism awareness, with students and staff encouraged to wear blue on World Autism Day. The school also raised money for the Nassau Suffolk Chapter of the Autism Society of America. Families and staff members could contribute decorated puzzles pieces, which were hung throughout Fairfield’s hallways, and make a small donation. The school received raffle baskets donated

by teachers and local businesses, which also served as a fundraiser for the organization, which works to assist families in finding support groups and social, recreational and educational opportunities for children with autism. Second grade teacher Jennifer Lidonnici coordinated the fundraising efforts at Fairfield and doubled the donation by personally matching money raised from the puzzle pieces and raffles. Students from Ms. Lidonnici’s class gave facts about autism during the daily morning announcements and members of the SADD club made informational posters.

Receiver Pravato Advises Late School Taxpayers Of Last Chance To assist property owners who missed the May 10th deadline for paying their 2020-2021 school taxes, Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents they can still pay the bill by June 1st with a State-mandated 2% late payment penalty while avoiding additional interest and fees from accruing on their property. The new swing is designed specifically for use by wheelchair bound individuals and is the first to be introduced in the park. This special wheelchair accessible swing was made possible by Massapequa residents Catherine Camisa, who proposed the installation of the swing, and Arthur Lih, who graciously donated $3,000 to make this dream a reality. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the United Nations, Americans consume 4.39 liters of gasoline per capita each day, while Canadians consume 3.62 liters per capita each day. In lieu of driving everywhere this summer, men and women who want to be more mindful of the environment can leave their cars home more frequently. Rather than driving the family to a nearby ice cream stand, walk or bike there instead. Run as many errands on foot or on a bicycle as possible. Walking or cycling is a great way to get some time outdoors on warm summer days, and reducing fuel consumption is an equally great way to help the planet.

• Vacation locally. Another way to help the planet when spending time outdoors this summer is to vacation locally. People who vacation close to home typically do not fly, and that’s a significant benefit to the planet. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change notes that aviation emissions release black carbon, nitrous oxide and sulphur oxide, which contribute to the greenhouse gas effect. And while the EIA notes that

Various activities, from organic gardening to planting trees to beach cleanups, provide a great way to get outdoors and help the planet at the same time. Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach. • Volunteer with a local park service. The National Park Service offers a variety of volunteer opportunities to individuals who are enamored with the great outdoors and are interested in protecting their local and national parks. It’s A Banner Year, Literally, For Massapequa Seniors

To celebrate the Class of 2021, the halls of Massapequa High School have been covered in colorful, handmade banners, just one of several spirit activities planned for the end of the school year. The goal was to bring joy to seniors in a year when many traditional activities were either canceled or modified due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Banners, many featuring Massapequa blue and gold, were made by students from the sophomore and junior classes, as well as by teachers, staff and student clubs. Seniors say

the gesture means a lot to them. “It’s really nice and it livens up the halls,” Isabella DeLuso said. “We’re very appreciative of it,” added Kathryn Castoria. “The school is trying to do everything that they can to show they care about us.” Senior class President Jack Devenish noted that the signs “light up the school” and make the seniors feel special during a year in which they have dealt with many restrictions. “This is finally giving the seniors that feeling that

this is our time to shine,” he said. “I’m glad that we’re beginning to honor our class in new and creative ways like this.” Following the lead of the Class of 2020, members of this year’s senior class continued the spirit doors initiative. Seniors were encouraged to decorate the front doors of their homes, celebrating their time at Massapequa High School as well as their future plans. The senior class also created an Instagram page to highlight college selections.

‘Eleven’ Author Inspires Berner Students

Sixth graders at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District learned about the writing and publishing process from an author whose child-friendly book about the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks is used as a teaching tool at the school. Author Tom Rogers recently connected with students via videoconference and talked about his book, “Eleven,” about the journey of a boy who turns 11 on 9/11. Rogers discussed the different ways authors find motivation for their

books. Many of his stories have been based on his own experiences; the idea for “Eleven” came from his nephew. Rogers shared how a high school English teacher inspired him to be a writer, after initially wanting to be a scientist. He also talked to students about the importance the editing process, noting that a “perfect first draft” doesn’t exist. He also “Even a great writer isn’t always successful the first time,” library media specialist Laurie MartucciWalsh said about the important writing lesson

that Rogers imparted on Berner’s sixth graders. Rogers concluded each presentation with a question and answer session. The visit was actually the result of outreach from both a Berner teacher and student. Sixth grade ELA and social studies teacher Vanessa Canning was looking to enhance the understanding of “Eleven” for her students after they read the novel. Student Briana Maleski wanted Rogers to visit as a surprise for her teacher, Ms. Canning.

National Fire Protection Association Says Use Caution When Using Grills

According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. Of the approximately 16,600 patients who visit emergency rooms for injuries involving grills each year, 8,200 are treated for thermal burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches flames or fire or hot molten liquid or steam. WebMD advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call 911 immediately if infants or seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the

affected area with cold water or a cold compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated. Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burned area. In such instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact. Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.

A handful of towns claim to be the first celebrants of Memorial Day. That debate figures to continue in perpetuity, but History.com notes that Waterloo, New York, was officially recognized by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson as the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966. Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Rochester, Wisconsin are some other towns that claim to have celebrated Memorial Day since the mid-1860s. Memorial Day has a rich history that highlights the importance of honoring the men and women who have given their lives while in service of the United States military.

Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggiWhitton (D - Glen Cove) is joining the Jepp family, LiveOnNY and local organ donation advocates in an urgent search for a living donor for Vivian, who has endured years of dialysis and two previous attempts at transplants. Vivian Jepp, a Port Washington mother of 10-year-old triplet boys is in desperate need of a kidney transplant. Legislator DeRiggiWhitton met with Vivian on Thursday, April 26 during a dome-lighting ceremony commemorating National Donate Life Month. Her search for a donor was sidelined in the spring of 2020 by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that public health conditions have improved and stabilized, the race is on to find her a match. “Vivian’s story is heartbreaking - and it is a call to action for all of

us,” Legislator DeRiggiWhitton said. “In recent months, I have witnessed the miracle of organ donation first-hand and seen how a living donor continued to thrive after giving one of my dearest friends her kidney - and with it, a renewed lease on life. If you have either A or O-type blood, I urge you to get screened as a potential donor and consider giving Vivian, her husband, and their three boys the greatest gift of all.” Vivian has navigated health struggles throughout much of her adult life. Shortly after graduating college 33 years ago, Vivian was diagnosed with systemic lupus - an inflammatory disease in which the immune system attacks its own tissue. The disease commonly affects a patient’s joints, skin and kidneys. Vivian was an elementary school teacher in New York City until five years ago, when

her kidneys began to fail. Soon thereafter, she began dialysis treatments. Due to the extensive strain dialysis places on human body and the lengthy wait time for a deceased donor, a living donor represents Vivian’s best chance for surviving and thriving. However, it can be challenging to find willing living donors, and New York State in general has historically been one of the worst states for organ donor registration - a place where the most patients are waiting for the fewest organs. Vivian, who has Type A blood, can receive a transplant from living donors with either A or O-type blood. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries. · Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina.
