On May 24th, the Flame of Hope will start its journey across Long Island at the Eastern Long Island Torch Run from Montauk to East Hampton. On May 26th, the Nassau County Leg will start at Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, run along Sunrise Highway, ending at Farmingdale State College. The Suffolk County Leg will start at the East Islip Fire Department, run along Montauk Highway and end at Farmingdale State College where they will meet with the Nassau County Leg & Special Olympics Athletes to run into the ceremony. These runs will lead into the State Summer Games held on June 11th in Brockport. The Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics it is the largest grassroots fundraising and public awareness vehicle for the movement across the globe! More than 85,000 officers from 35

Hope For Youth is hosting its Annual Run For Hope 5K in Heckscher State Park on May 14th beginning at 9 a.m. Proceeds from the run support Hope For Youth’s mission of facilitating positive change in youth and families on Long Island through residential, out-patient and preventive services. Last year, the event was attended by over 200 participants who walked, jogged, and ran to help bring awareness to the agency mission and the programs offered to families in need. Rosie Rosemarie Kupencow – “Rosie,” as I always affectionately called her – was the very first friend I made when I started working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, just about 11 years ago. The resident proofreader, she introduced herself to me right away, and made sure I felt welcome in this new, unfamiliar setting, showing me the ins and outs of the newspaper she had come to call home for close to a decade at that point. In addition to being hired as an editorial assistant, I was brought on to help Rose, my new friend, with some of the weekly proofreading duties. Armed with her magnifying glass and a stash of green pens – “only green,” she would say, “NEVER make corrections with anything else” – she quickly took me under her wing, and we became close companions, often taking breaks together outside in whatever patches of sun we could find, and occasionally heading out for lunch outings at Nathan’s, one of our favorite destinations. She would always order the fish and chips from Arthur Treacher’s, then laugh hysterically as I looked on in horror, marveling at why someone would go to Nathan’s for anything other than a hotdog. After a short time, we realized that not only had I attended high school with her daughter, Jennifer, but we now lived just a few short blocks away from each other, and we began to carpool frequently to and from work. On one memorable return trip, during a rather heavy rainstorm, I infamously “drowned” my car during an ill-fated attempt to navigate down

her flooded street, despite her repeated warnings that it probably wasn’t going to end well. She never did let me live that one down, deservedly so. But that was Rose, always dispensing advice – some solicited, some not so much – and serving as the unofficial “work mother” to many of the younger employees. In that capacity, a coworker and I took her along as a “chaperone” of sorts on my very first trip to Adventureland not so many years ago. As we made our way from one ride to another, taking care not to miss any, the air was filled with the sounds of screaming – not ours, but of our beloved Rosie, yelling, “Get me OFF this thing!!!” and “Why did I let you two talk me into this???” I don’t think I have ever laughed so hysterically in my life. Needless to say, that was our first and last trip to any amusement park. But the memories, well, those last a lifetime. (As does the framed photo of the three of us plummeting over “Adventure Falls” at the moment of impact, a priceless reminder of all the fun that was had that day.) Just last week, Rose lost her battle with cancer, leaving a giant void here at South Bay – and in my heart. Her selfless determination to continue on over the past year was a perfect example of the type of person she was, always putting others first while forging ahead. What an incredible person, one that is dearly missed by so many. I’ll miss her sitting in the “friend” chair on the other side of my desk, coming to chat about life and work and family and friends and everything in between.
I’ll miss our goodnatured teasing back and forth... her imitations of my ballet positions... her self-deprecating analysis of her “fashion” sense – “don’t have a hair clip, use a paper clip!”... our phone conversations – in spite of her staunch refusal to ever get a cell phone, and her insistence on keeping important phone numbers on a crumbled piece of paper in her pocketbook… just seeing her smiling face every day at the office. But mostly, I’ll miss my special friend. This past December, in celebration of her birthday, Rose and I went out to dinner. She may not have been feeling like her old self, but it was truly like old times. For over three hours, we sat and talked, just the two of us, reminiscing about the highlights and lowlights of our decade working together, chatting about the latest happenings in our lives… and we laughed, hysterically, about many of the same stories recounted here – and countless others, some not suitable for publication in a family newspaper! We could have continued talking for three more hours, easily; it seemed that neither of us wanted that night, that moment, to end. I will always treasure it. How lucky I was to have her in my life – there to guide the way as I began this new chapter all those years ago… and there to see me through the journey every step of the way since. Rose, you will never be forgotten – not by me, and not by those who had the wonderful pleasure of knowing you, of loving you, of having you touch their lives. May you be at peace now.

Bill Leahy Coordinator & Administrative Supervisor of the Homeland Security - Emergency Preparedness Unit to speak on the topic of “Terrorism.” Lieutenant Leahy gave an excellent and powerful presentation on “Terrorism” that was very in depth and especially informative which had a positive impact on the Division I CERT membership. He spoke on
the “History of Terrorism” and the“Eight Signs of Terrorism” that all CERT’s should be aware of. Nassau County CERT is organized under the Nassau County Office of Emergency Management CERT. Elaine Zseller has been chosen by the New York State Council of School Superintendents (NYSCOSS) to receive the Friend of The Council Award. She earned the award in recognition of a non-member’s contribution to the field of
education. Dr. Zseller has been instrumental in the analyzing the data from The Council’s triennial study of school superintendents in New York state. The 2015 edition of this study and its subsequent publication of results, “Snapshot,” is the
fourth edition for which she has been responsible for the statistics. “This award is well deserved and we are very proud of Elaine and the work she has done,” said Dr. Robert R. Dillon, District Superintendent, Nassau BOCES. Since, 2009, Dr. Zseller has been a program supervisor for the Curriculum, Instruction and Technology Department at Nassau BOCES. She is currently program supervisor for the Strategic Initiatives Department. She holds a Doctorate in Educational Administration and a master’s degree in secondary math education, both from New York University, and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Concordia University Chicago.
Voices Guiding Choices of offering prevention programs to students,” said Kimberley Hession, Ames Campus social worker. “This year, over 70 students in grades 9-12 were trained through the Red Watch Band program, a Stony Brook Universitydeveloped school initiative designed to help bystanders learn to effectively respond to alcohol-related emergencies.” To date, under the advisement of Massapequa High School social worker Joanne Waters and Hession, the district has trained more than 300 students in the program. In addition,
Hession and the Ames students spearheaded the development of a Massapequa chapter of the Active Minds Club, a nationwide mental health awareness club. Primarily, student members learn the importance of mental health issues and the connections they have to substance abuse among young people. Hession and Waters are also active members of the Massapequa Takes Action (MTA) Coalition which supports prevention efforts within the school and community.

MUSEUM VISIT - Grace Early Childhood Center Pre-K teachers, students and family members visited the Firefighters Museum & Education Center in Garden City. Twenty students from Holy Trinity High School participated in the preliminary round of the Long Island Math Fair back in February, and 11 of them brought home medals in the final round held on April 15th at Hofstra University. In the summer of 2016 the Art League of Long Island is launching PreCollege Programs for students interested in learning what it takes to become and Architect or Fashion Designer. Taught by established and practicing Architects and Fashion Designers, teens ages 13 to 18 will gain deeper knowledge of these design professions through hands-on contact in their chosen medium, improve their creative design skills, and learn about the industry as a whole. Art League of Long Island Executive Director Charlee Miller knows well that Long Island’s economy depends on the next generation of
professionals and business owners to sustain and grow the economy. As a financial services executive for 37 years prior to joining the Art League, Miller has encountered families working hard to achieve and sustain the American Dream. Having seen many young people leave Long Island for jobs, careers and housing elsewhere, it is important now to provide early Pre-College education that will inspire and stimulate growth in the sciences, technology, engineering and math (STEM) that are crucial to the future economy of Long Island. However, without the creativity and innovation inherent (and a largely forgotten virtue) in these
fields, many professionals cannot reach their highest levels of performance. The Art League aims to put the STEAM in these programs by developing and encouraging Artistic skill. With Art Education Program Director Elizabeth Kisseleff’s arrival at the Art League from Pratt Institute in early 2015, under her direction the Architecture and Fashion Programs were fully designed and developed to serve the needs of the Long Island Community. With her extensive experience in Pre-College programs Kisseleff understood the need for not only a high quality program in Architecture and Fashion, but the added need for
proximity and affordability for Long Island residents. On Long Island there are no summer architectural programs for high school students and few options for fashion students. The Art League’s programs offer certificates of completion for students who attend the threeweek program of their choice, totaling 60 contact hours. The Art League’s Pre-College Program is comparable to the amount of instructional time spent at colleges and universities in New York City and outside of New York but at a much lower price when factoring in tuition and commute. Imagine getting a first-class summer design intensive so close to home you can almost see it from

Pre-College Programs your own backyard! Architecture and Fashion programs run July 11th through July 28th. In addition to the two Design Programs, the Pre-College program also offers the Art League’s well-established Portfolio Development running in two three-week sessions starting July 11th and August 1st respectively. A public exhibit featuring works by students in the Pre-College programs will take place in the League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery August 13th to August 21st. Scholarships have been made possible by small business and corporate partnerships, private donations and Art League supporters. Scholarships will be awarded based on
financial need or merit. The deadline to submit the scholarship application is May 16th. The Art League of Long Island is a not-for-profit visual arts organization providing a full schedule of classes, workshops, exhibits, and events for Long Islanders since 1955.
