The Town of Oyster Bay will be holding its Blood Drive on Thursday, April 13th, to help hospitals meet the ongoing need for blood donations. “Long Island Blood Services cannot meet its vital, lifesaving mission without the efforts of the Town’s Blood Drive and its volunteers,” said Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson. “We strongly encourage all those eligible to participate. If you have family members or friends who are willing to donate, please ask them to also support our effort.” “Blood banks need to be prepared 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “This constant state of urgency is why people should always donate whenever they can. Donating is not only quick and easy but it is an entirely safe process. All materials used during the process are sterile, disposable and used only once…by you. There is no danger of contracting any disease,

including AIDS. The pint of blood you donate will never be missed by your body, which manufactures an equivalent amount in 24 hours. When broken down into component parts, one single pint of blood can be used to heal and help the bodies of three different people.” Locations for the blood drives are: Town Hall South Conference Room, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa (9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) and Town Hall North, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.). Councilwoman Johnson added that in order to qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old…16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note…weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who has received a tattoo within the past twelve months is ineligible to apply. It is recommended that volunteers eat well

(low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. The Councilwoman noted that all blood types are needed, especially O positive and O negative. Refreshments will be provided for all who donate. In addition, each time someone makes a donation, they earn advantage points redeemable for a wide variety of gifts, gift cards, or other merchandise. Also, McDonalds will be offering a coupon to all donor registrants offering a free large sandwich or salad when you make any type of purchase at McDonalds. while going to high school and college, and then later on while working a full time job, I tended to miss quite a number of regular rehearsals leading up to the big recital at the end of the year. Somehow, it always came together in the end. All these years later, my retention seems to have… slipped a bit, I suppose. Mid-April, and I’ve only missed one class – and yet the dance has taken on a “brand new” vibe each week. There’s something to be said for getting old too. And with that, it has occurred to be that I will be reaching the midpoint of my thirties this summer. How did it get so late so soon? as Dr. Seuss mused. How, indeed.

Hofstra University’s PEIR program is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, says Bradley Kaye, Associate Director of Lifelong Learning. PEIR stands for Personal Enrichment in Retirement. Kaye says PEIR, which meets year-round usually four days a week, provides opportunities for intellectual stimulation, cultural enrichment and personal growth for retirees or semi-retired individuals aged 55 or older. PEIR, he adds, is one of the many lifelong learning programs in universities across the country. Students and staff at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus donned blue on April 3rd in support of the 6,000 people a year who lose their lives to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS, as well as the people who are living with the neurodegenerative disease. In an effort to raise awareness, speakers from ALS Ride for Life spoke to a group of ninthgraders about the disease and about the annual fundraising event that has raised $7 million during two decades. During the past two years, the course has gone through Massapequa, with students and staff standing outside

of several of the district’s schools with large banners to show support. Ames students Anthony Gazzola, Kevin McLeer and Anthony Papasodero spoke about the history of Ride for Life and its founder, Chris Pendergast, who has lived with ALS for 23 years. A video featured Mr. Pendergast’s daily challenges and footage from past rides. It also explained how ALS came to be known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease for the former New York Yankees baseball player whose career and life were cut short. Speakers included Barbara Brown, a board member of Ride for Life, and Paul Weissman,

who is living with the disease. Mr. Weissman told students that they will face challenges in their lives, and their goals should be to never give up, never lose hope and remain optimistic despite the odds against them. He also spoke of the small but meaningful acts that inspire people with ALS to keep on living and fighting, from simple words of encouragement to the Ice Bucket Challenge craze of 2014. Tania Willman, the executive assistant to the principal, said that Ames would make a donation to ALS Ride for Life when it passes through Massapequa during its 20th annual journey in May.

The Towers of Freedom 911 Military Monument Ceremony was recently held at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa. The Towers of Freedom Military Monument, Inc. is a charitable organization formed by retired members of FDNY, NYPD and United

States Military personnel, some of whom were first responders to the Twin Towers on 9/11. The monument memorializes those lost in the events of 9/11, as well as fallen members of the military in the subsequent war on terror.

As part of the program, the organization’s dignitaries presented a commemorative brick to Supervisor Saladino in recognition of his unwavering support of the organization and its causes.

Students and staff at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District used their feet to achieve a feat - raising hundreds of dollars for Down Syndrome International. The school marked World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st with

a “Rock Our Socks” fundraiser. Children and adults were asked to wear funky socks to school and donate a dollar. The idea was brought to the school by the parent of an Unqua kindergartner with Down syndrome, who provided socks for the staff. The fundraiser was organized

and promoted by the Student Council. The purpose of “Rock Our Socks” was to raise money for a cause that benefits a child at the school, and to raise awareness about the challenges that people with Down syndrome face.

Writing What’s Real Animals, sports and world features were just some of the topics that second-graders wrote about at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. The students celebrated their completed nonfiction stories during recent classroom publishing parties. The lesson began by studying children’s author and illustrator Gail Gibbons. Students used

her books as mentor texts, which served as examples of good writing. They then picked topics for their “All About…” books, did research and interviewed an expert. The writing process included creating a first draft, editing and revising their work, and creating a cover. In Janeen Signorile’s class, students shared their stories with their “milk and cookie partners.” As one child read their book,

the other listened and took notes on what they learned and what they liked. Teachers Karen Ellinger and Stacy Labriola brought their classes together for a publishing party, allowing each student to read to a new friend. The secondgrade teachers noted the hard work that the children put into their books and the pride they felt in being able to share their finished products with their peers.

Pajama Drive Berner Middle School students may not have looked like they put much effort into their wardrobes on March 22nd, but by wearing their pajamas to school they raised awareness for an important cause. In addition to donning their nighttime attire during the day, students donated new sets of pajamas for infants, children and teenagers. The collection supported Jake’s Jammies, an initiative of the Ashley

Wade Foundation, which was founded by a former Massapequa student. The organization supports children and teens who are chronically ill and gives them a new pair of pajamas each time they enter the hospital. Members of Chiefs Challenge, a character education club, went around to classrooms collecting pajamas during homeroom. They also accepted monetary donations which will be

used to buy more pajamas. A donation box was also placed near the main entrance. The mission of Chiefs Challenge is to create a positive school climate through the six pillars of character - caring, citizenship, fairness, respect, responsibility and trustworthiness. Students build a sense of social responsibility and empathy through the club’s various charitable initiatives.

Elizabeth saved 3,874 notes with Join.me codes and used them to make the skirt part of her dress. A courtyard at Unqua Elementary School can serve as a place for students to learn about the environment thanks to the efforts of a Massapequa High School senior. Christopher Hadsall completed his Eagle Scout community service project at his former elementary school by building a planting bed, picnic table and birdhouses. Christopher, a member of Troop 660, enlisted the help of several other Boy Scouts from the Massapequa School District to complete his project including past and present Unqua students including sixth-graders William Arnold, Lawrence Manning, Brian Pianese

and Miles Todtfeld, seventh-grader Mark Barbarello and eighthgrader J.J. Vogt. The centerpiece is a three-tiered flowerbed, which he filled with topsoil and also provided an irrigation system. Next to it is a picnic table so students can sit and take notes while studying the environment or make observations on the progress of their plantings. The addition of birdhouses is expected to bring more wildlife to Unqua’s school grounds. “It’s a bit nostalgic for me to come back to my roots and give something back,” said Christopher, who graduated from Unqua in 2011. “I hope

that students and teachers will take advantage of this. Hands-on experiences stick out in students’ minds.” Christopher, who is salutatorian of the Class of 2017, added that the purpose of this project is to show students there are small but meaningful ways for them to make positive impacts on the environment. He received financial support from the PTA for construction materials. “I think it’s great that he thought of us for his project,” said Principal Deanna Catapano. “It’s a nice addition to the school and increases learning opportunities for our students.”

Massapequa High School junior Elizabeth Schafer has used a lifelong challenge as inspiration for an award-winning art project. She created a dress for her fashion design class that was displayed at the Sunrise Mall. Elizabeth has a condition called albinism, which limits her vision. Since last year, she has used an app called Join.me to connect her iPad to her teacher’s computer or SmartBoard so she can see notes and other course material. Each time she connects, she needs a nine-digit

other pieces of paper with Join.me codes stuck on. They are held together with fishing line and glue. Elizabeth’s work was selected for the Art in the Heart exhibit hosted by the Long Island Art Teachers Association, and she received an award for 3-D Excellence. “For me, this dress goes beyond a design that incorporates Join. me codes,” she said. “This outfit is extremely symbolic and through this outfit a story can be told. Whether it be through inspiring me, writing down codes, helping conceptualize the design or actually helping me construct the dress, so many people have had pivotal roles in creating this outfit.” Ms. Thornton explained that Elizabeth’s creation was a multidisciplinary project. In addition to the art skills required, it incorporated technology with her use of the Join. me codes and science by reusing materials to create a product.

Immersed in Art Three students from McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently had their artwork displayed at the prestigious Art Supervisors Association exhibit at Farmingdale State College. Second-

graders Lila Hunter and Grace Reilly, and thirdgrader Joseph Moehringer, were selected by art teacher Ellen Cervone for the show. Grace’s piece of a monster behind a door, “Grace’s Nightmare,” was

made using markers, pencil and constriction paper. Lila used crayons to capture her dreams on Christmas night, and Joseph created a self-portrait with colored pencils and Sharpie markers.
