Journey to the Past a deerskin drum, turn corn into cornflower, and view artifacts such as clothing, instruments and hunting tools. Time, without fail, is the one thing we all wish we had more of, made better use of, didn’t squander so liberally… and the one thing we can never get back once it is lost. Even with this insight, though, it tends to continue to pass us by, just out of grasp. Why is that? What is the driving force behind our ability to let the minutes lapse into hours, the hours into days, the days into a downward spiral of being complacently, and consistently, unproductive? Some would point to the company we keep, the environments which surround us, the choices we make

along the way that lead us to find comfort - even in our misery, at times - but comfort, nonetheless. Is it our great fear of change, of upsetting the routine, which leads us to sit back and watch as the world parades on by? There are those who make it their mission to take action, regardless of the unfavorable circumstances they may find themselves thrown into; but these individuals seem to represent a slim minority. How do we, the others, this great majority who desire to improve our lot in life, follow suit? Perhaps if these instants of time were filled with the “infinite variety” Chopra speaks of, life would not seem so mundane at intervals. But the fluctuations which occur are often too minor to register as true growth. It seems we, as a society, are incapable of feeling we are moving forward unless we are in the midst of tumult and upheaval.

The wish, always, is to find this path to progress and to have it be a steady - if uphill - journey. That, I think, is something we would all find ourselves infinitely more capable of sustaining. Time, on a road such as that, would travel with us, even, on pace; rather than sprinting miles ahead, leaving us in the rearview mirror. It may pass regardless, but at least we would be along for the ride, active participants in how we choose to use it rather than bystanders waiting for some phantom sign that this is it … NOW is your time! In reality “the” time is when you choose to acknowledge it, when you make it your mission to take control of your destiny and be a part of the process, instead of allowing it to happen to you. We know this, we believe this in the depths of our souls… now we need to use this knowledge to create the beautiful future we envision for ourselves.

Welcome Friends of Greater Port Jefferson, Inc., DBA Welcome Friends

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters,

local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone today announced that registration for the Junior Summer Golf Camps at the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course in Woodbury, located at 1 South Woods Road in Woodbury, will begin in mid-March and continue through Spring and into the summer. “Boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 17 years old can take advantage of this terrific program to hone their skills on the course under the guidance of experienced golfing professionals,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “This acclaimed

Fitness Class Registration Councilman Thomas P. Hand invites residents interested in maintaining or improving their levels of fitness to participate in the Town of Oyster Bay’s popular Co-Ed Fitness Classes, which return this April. The spring fitness classes are for individuals 18 years of age or older and will be held at the Hicksville Athletic Center. “These fitness programs provide a terrific form of aerobic exercise that builds strength as well as increases general flexibility,” said Councilman Hand. “Zumba, Yoga and Pilates are very popular programs

that give residents an outlet to enjoy exercising and staying in shape, all while meeting new people.” Zumba classes will hold two sessions. Residents can choose one session, either Mondays (starting Monday, April 9th from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.) or Wednesdays (beginning Wednesday April 11th from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.). Pilates classes will hold two sessions. Lacrosse Tournament Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that registration is underway for LAXFEST, a lacrosse tournament for boys PAL teams in grades 2 through 6. The tournament begins Friday, July 20th and run through Sunday, July 22nd, with games being played at both John J. Burns Park and Field of Dreams in Massapequa. “Lacrosse is strongly woven into the fabric of the Long Island community and the Town of Oyster Bay is pleased to partner

with PAL to make this exciting tournament a reality,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We are certainly proud to support PAL with outstanding facilities and assistance. This tournament will feature some the region’s best young lacrosse talent.” Friday games will start at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday games will begin at 8:30 a.m. The entry fee is $750 per team and each is required to provide its own insurance. It is also important to note that each player must have a

U.S. Lacrosse number to be eligible to participate in this event. Listen and Learn After weeks of researching, writing and revising, third-graders shared their completed nonfiction books in Danielle McCaffery’s class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Each student picked

an animal to write about, choosing creatures on land and under the sea. They used their Chromebooks to do research and also reviewed other nonfiction books to analyze writing styles. During the week of February 26th, the

class hosted a writing celebration. A few authors shared their books each day as their classmates gathered on the carpet. The listeners had to fill out a sheet about each book to document what they liked and what they learned.

As part of the fourthgrade social studies curriculum on state and local history, students in Megan Clark’s class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District wrote pieces about the impact of

Pippin on Stage The story of King Charlemagne’s son came to life during Massapequa High School’s production of “Pippin” from March 2nd-4th. The story followed a sorrowful lad who returned from university longing for a life of excitement and adventure. The title role of Pippin was played by Matthew Ferrugia. Other lead roles including Erin Russo

as Catherine, Alexandra Zografos as Fastrada, Zachary Goldberg as Charlemagne, Antoinette Corigliano as Berthe, Christina Scala as Lewis, Nolan Tucker as Theo and Sebastien Diaquoi as Leading Player. The two-act “show within a show” featured two dozen musical numbers. Presented by the music department, there was a Thursday afternoon

performance for senior citizens followed by Friday and Saturday night shows. It was directed by Kathryn Tauches. The pit orchestra was led by Eva Arnold and the technical crew was led by Daniel Wahl. Sets were built and designed by art and technology students under the direction of Gale Domingo and James DeSantis.

Mixing and Mingling Students broke out of their lunchtime routines during Mix It Up at Lunch Day at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School Day, an initiative designed to foster new friendships. During the two-day program, students in fourth and fifth grades were randomly assigned lunch tables. Mix It Up at Lunch Day is an international campaign by Teaching Tolerance encouraging children to expand their social boundaries. The goal is to empower students to be proactive about caring, acting responsibly

and being all-embracing when it comes to their peer relations. It was spearheaded at Lockhart by social worker Kerry Rivera. On the first day, children picked colored pom poms from a bag and sat at the table with the corresponding color. Prompted by conversation question cards, they participated in discussions to learn more about each other. Students picked colors again on the second day, and this time played games such as tic-tactoe, word searches and crossword puzzles while working together.

Ms. Rivera said that students completed an online survey after the two days and the response was overwhelmingly positive. The Massapequa High School Ames Campus held its annual Hoops for Heart basketball tournament on February 28th. The event raised $1,020 for the American Heart Association, as February

was American Heart Month. The 3-on-3 competition has been a tradition at the school since 2004, organized by physical education teacher Gennaro Trotta. This year, 11

teams of ninth-graders competed. The winning team included John Reece, Jacob Roos and Michael Savella. Cheerleaders also performed at the event.

Promoting Friendship Massapequa High School art students are spreading a message about kindness and inclusion across the community. In addition to the Koda benches they have built for several elementary schools in the district, they recently used their artistic talents to create a book about friendship. The benches are places where a child can go when they are in need of

a companion. Koda is the Native American word for friend, and Massapequa is a community full of Native American inspiration. Koda benches have been provided to four elementary schools, with a fifth under construction for Birch Lane. That project is done in cooperation with technology students. High school students in Penny Schneider’s drawing and painting class created

colorful illustrations and messages for a 40-page book, “On My Way to the Koda Bench.” The young artists worked individually or in pairs to create single pages or two-page spreads. They envisioned what students should bring with them to the Koda bench, such as a smile, an accepting attitude or a funny joke to tell. “The student worked like authors and illustrators,”

Ms. Schneider said. “It was a real-life lesson and they did an awesome job.” The book is dedicated to her father, Arthur Cohen, a former Massapequa High School teacher. It will also include a page with all the names of the students who contributed their talents. The art students partnered with the Chiefs Challenge Club, under the direction of social worker Joanne Waters. Once

the books are printed, each elementary school will receive a copy for its library. Additional copies will be sold and proceeds will benefit the Yes Community Counseling Center in Massapequa for its antibullying programs. “It’s quite extraordinary that we were able to come together and bring this idea
