Winter being one of those seasons best suited for indoor activities, I have recently taken up the hobby of reading; well, by taken up, I mean I have ordered several selections with the intent of reading them (hopefully) before spring arrives. I always say I want to read at least one book a month; generally, this amounts to a single magazine, perhaps a chapter or two of a cast-aside novel from several years ago… rarely do I seem to make any considerable progress in this literary department. This year, on New Year’s Day in fact, I made it my mission to use one of my holiday gift cards to order a handful of the “classics” - The Wind in

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. To gear up for the winter Olympics, students at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District imagined themselves as athletes. Children made their own Olympic selfies in a project that combined literacy and technology skills. After using their Chromebooks to learn more about the games,

such as reading about why Pyongyang, South Korea was chosen as the host city, they selected an Olympic sport to further research. Each student envisioned him or herself as an athlete in that sport and wrote a passage about it. Information included a history of the sport, noted athletes and fun facts. Students used their

Thinking Like Olympians Chromebook webcams to snap headshots and add their faces to caricatures of winter-sport athletes. With the help of computer teacher assistant Donna Meyer, they completed their projects using Google Slides in the computer lab. Community Connections The Career and Community Connections Class at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus held a Super Bowl party on February 2nd. The ninth-graders learned about the game and associated traditions as part of their continual study on current events, and used technology by voting on the team they expected to win on the Smart Board. They practiced their math skills by measuring ingredients to make party snacks including English muffin pizzas, sour cream dip and macaroni and cheese.
