Kindergartners got an introduction to the engineering design process at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Under the direction of magnet and STEAM teacher Jennifer Tand, students used provided materials such as cotton balls, paper clips,

rubber bands, bottle caps, straws and more to make their first names. The STEAM challenge was the first of many that they will complete in their elementary school years, which allow students to explore science, technology, engineering, the arts and math.

Children learned about the engineering design process, which emphasizes the importance of planning. The kindergartners first had to sketch out their projects and identify which materials would be used for each letter.

Writing What’s Real Reading, researching and writing are the steps third-graders are following as they work on their nonfiction writing in Danielle McCaffery’s classroom at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students are writing books about animals. Students began by exploring several books to

look at different writing styles and identify the key elements of nonfiction stories. Each child then picked a topic, with monkeys, sharks, penguins and tigers among the animals chosen. They completed their research using books and online resources on their Chromebooks. The writing process will take several weeks

as students will create multiple drafts. They will review their work through peer editing and in conferences with Ms. McCaffery. Each book must have at least six unique sections, along with a cover page and table of contents. When the works are completed, the class will hold a writing celebration.

Bringing Lit to Life Technology enhanced a literature lesson for eighthgraders at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, as they recreated scenes from the courtroom drama “12 Angry Men.” The project was coordinated by English teacher Robert Joyce and technology learning coach Danielle Mammolito.

Classroom desks were put together to create a long table in front of a green wall and beside a green curtain. Students sat around the table playing different members of the jury and acted out scenes from the story that serve as the major plot points. After recording on iPhones, students were able to edit the video

on their Chromebooks and use green-screen technology to superimpose the background of the jury room. Each finished video was about 10 minutes long. Mr. Joyce explained that the assignment provided students with an engaging way to better understand the book and learn about the characters.

Aspiring Teachers

Massapequa High School students who want to share their love of language with others have a place to go with the creation of the after-school Educators Rising club. The group is for students who are interested in a career teaching world languages. William Anderson, the curriculum associate for world languages and ENL, said the club was created to help address a national shortage of foreign language educators. During meetings,

participants discuss strategies used by highly effective teachers and ways to connect effectively with language learners. The students also discuss how they have transferred their foreign language skills from the classroom to real-world situations. Massapequa offers American Sign Language, French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. Junior Mikaela Ellis, who as been taking Spanish since seventh grade, said

she is considering a career teaching the language because she is interested in the exploration of other cultures. She is learning what she can do to excel as a Spanish teacher. “I’ve always wanted to be a teacher, and I’ve always been interested in the Spanish language,” she said. “It’s important in this day and age to be able to communicate with other people because not everyone speaks English.”

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

“I believe all things happen for a reason” Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, said to me as we sat down to talk more in-depth about this international non-profit. It was not by coincidence that he and his wife crossed paths with Lawrence Hohler, retired Smithtown East HS teacher, and Joseph Kirima, primary school teacher in Kenya, to learn about what those two educators came together in hopes to form: a Kenyan orphanage. Hope Children’s Fund operates with the motto “Education Is Key” and for children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Mann explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family, hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. One of their favorites is of a young lady named Betty Gakii who entered their orphanage when she was little, did well and became a teacher, later got married and had children of her own, and now is the Administrative Assistant at this same orphanage! Kevin feels that he and his wife have received and learned much more from the orphans than they’ve given and taught them. With that being said, if you would like to help change the lives of orphans in Kenya, you can!

There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. Upon sponsoring a child, you will receive a photo and bio of them, and you can write letters/send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages to brighten their days. Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information. Leaving a (Paw) Print I recently received an e-mail for an event listing from a teacher at my old high school, which sparked a conversation about how many years it’s been since I roamed those very hallways myself {approaching 18, nearly half of my lifetime} and how it might be nice to stop by to say hello to the relatively few teachers who remain there after all this time. Which got me to thinking… there was a time when my fellow alumni and I couldn’t wait to “visit” after we graduated, popping in every few months or so to see what was new and exciting in the world of Lindy High. As the years passed, college came and went, and we found ourselves employed in our various fields of study, these encounters became few and far between. We no longer related to those teenagers who breezed by on their way to class, nor did we

see high school as the center of the only universe we had ever inhabited. We now had the world before us, one that included days not marked by a bell schedule, job descriptions not dictated by a syllabus. Sure, there was the occasional visit to the old college campus now; perhaps a special “guest” speaking engagement to a group of soon-to-be grads about to embark on their own adventures into the great world of career exploration. But that was where the academic connection ceased. Fast forward nearly two decades past these formative years, and the nostalgia for simpler times has returned. Having the opportunity to reconnect with those friends and former classmates has taken on added significance as the years have passed. Several have left us far too soon; others’ lives have taken

them to the far reaches of the country, making the advent of social media a welcome - and perhaps the only - connection. But among the hundreds that we graduated with, there are also the dozens who still reside right here on Long Island, instantly reachable and available to reminisce at any time. It’s a comforting thought, that ability to pick up where you left off at a given point, to chat about old times and new pursuits, and to realize - with rare exception - that we are all dealing with the same daily struggle to find that sense of fulfillment that was promised to us all those years ago. Perhaps a visit to the old high school stomping grounds is in order; a “refresher course,” if you will, courtesy of the very place where it all began. As they like to say in Lindy… once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog…

Anthony Kariamis from the Massapequa UFSD was named Student of the Quarter at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech career and technical education high school. He was honored for his grades, attendance, work ethic and preparedness. Students of the Quarter have taken the initiative on class projects and are role models for their fellow students, in both the classroom and the workplace.

Kindergartners in the Massapequa School District learn about the weather as part of the science curriculum, and youngsters at East Lake Elementary School recently explored wind. Magnet and STEAM teacher Lisa Gennardo led students in an activity in which they could discover the effects of

the wind on different objects. She set up a fan in her classroom and had children place different items in front including a ball, a plastic cup, feathers, a balloon, a rubber duck and a book. The children made predictions for each object on whether they thought the fan would blow it away. They watched as a book

that was standing up was blown over, but didn’t move at all when laid down flat. As a follow-up activity, the students had to make a shield to protect a plastic cup from the wind, using a plate, Popsicle sticks, tape and pipe cleaners, while following the engineering design process.

Through mystery and intrigue, students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District improved their reading comprehension skills. Third- and fifthgraders took part in a weeklong Submerge Storytelling program, in which a classroom was transformed into the setting of a story. The fictional story of Trevor Cool, a middleschool student who breaks codes for the CIA, came to life during this

interactive experience. Facilitator Cory Levine filled the rooms with maps, messages, illustrations, toys and other props that served as clues, and students went around with clipboards to gather evidence and record their findings. They also had to search for hidden keys and crack secret codes. As the story unfolded and students continued their search for the missing Trevor, Mr. Levine posed questions to get them thinking about

how the developments connected to the items in the room. The experience taught them about the different elements of a story such as character development, plot and conflict. It also showed them the importance of using evidence to back up their arguments. Fifth-grade teacher Susan Murphy said that the students developed skills and strategies “in an engaging and fun way” that will help them in reading and writing.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

Pet Food Drive Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson announced that the Town of Oyster Bay will participate in Long Island Cares’ 7th annual Legislative Pet Food Drive Challenge. The drive will take place during the months of February and March and focus on collecting for the family members most vulnerable to hunger, residents’ pets. Long Island Cares formed Baxter’s Pet Pantry Pets in 2009 to assist in feeding dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, caged pets, fish, reptiles and all others considered family members. Strong Financial Outlook On January 25th, 2018, both the Office of the New York State Comptroller and Moody’s Investors Service reported a strong financial outlook for Massapequa Public Schools. The OSC released its annual Fiscal Stress Monitoring report, and for the three years measured, the district received a perfect score on all indicators. The system has two main components: financial and environmental. According to the comptroller’s office, fiscal indicators measure key drivers of fiscal stress such as year-end fund balances, operating deficits/surpluses, cash position and reliance on short-term cash flow debt. Environmental indicators within the district’s

control include budget vote approval rate, teacher turnover rate, and class size. Massapequa Public Schools is one of only three districts on Long Island to receive a perfect score in all areas. Additionally, Moody’s Investors Service reaffirmed the district’s excellent Aa1 credit rating, which next to the highest credit rating available and higher than the U.S. school median of Aa3. According to Moody’s, a key credit factor includes a very strong financial position, an exceptionally light debt burden and the community’s strong wealth and income profile. Of particular note, Moody’s praised the district by indicating “the

district benefits from a strong management team, which has a track record of conservative budgeting and financial practices.” Moreover, Moody’s cited that the districts fund balance as a percent of operating revenues is on par with other Moody’srated school districts nationwide. “The Board of Education and administration have been diligent in their joint efforts to be fiscally responsible,” noted Superintendent of Schools Lucille F. Iconis. Added Deputy Superintendent Alan Adcock, “We take great pride in our financial stability and will continue to work to ensure that Massapequa remains a fiscally sound district.”
