As we begin this second month of 2017, let us take stock of the year so far… Mother Nature has been relatively kind, sparing us the worst of winter’s wrath and limiting the hazardous weather to one shovel-worthy pileup of the white stuff. Of course, history has shown February to be among the snowiest here on Long Island, so be forewarned. No matter what that little furry critter says tomorrow, we still have several weeks to go before we can start looking for crocuses. Me, I just purchased three new books and am actually looking forward to some cozy, inclement weather to settle in and start reading. The beginning of the year may not be great for outdoor activities - although, it should be noted,

some of the most exquisite sunrises and sunsets tend to grace our skies during these month - but there are plenty of indoor hobbies to embrace, from movies to bowling to planetarium shows and more. Speaking of pastimes, I was pleasantly surprised to receive quite a bit of feedback to last week’s column on the closing of my yoga studio, with many offering their recommendations for alternative locations and similarly touting the benefits of this spiritual practice. Thank you to all who wrote in – it is certainly nice to know that there is an entire community of fellow “yogis” out there, and that many of you read my column weekly! In line with that feedback, it also occurred to me that I never did share the arrival of a new little finned friend,

“Spud,” who I adopted back at the end of November. While no pet will ever come close to replacing my Buddy and our very special relationship, Spud is certainly an entertaining little fellow with a personality all his own. Just a mere baby betta when I took him in, he is slowly growing into a beautiful boy with spikey blue fins and a penchant for darting to and fro and “playing” with his reflection. Spud’s swimming skills can use a little work, and I’m still crushing his food pellets into tiny, more manageable crumbs for his delicate system; but, overall, he seems to be adjusting to his new home quite nicely. And with that, we head into February, hoping that each passing month brings with it a little more sunshine into our lives.

No Name-Calling Week, a national initiative to combat bullying, came to Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District for the first time the week of January 17th20th. It was organized by the school’s Gay-Straight Alliance to promote tolerance and acceptance. Members of the GSA made several posters that were placed around the school featuring mean words that were crossed out. They also researched

facts about name-calling and bullying that were read during the morning announcements. During their lunch periods, students signed a pledge vowing that they would not call others hurtful names. Teachers wore pins to show unified support for the cause. “We want to be the generation to reach out our hands in kindness,” said GSA member Olivia Arguelles. “We think one person at a time can

School Assembly ventriloquist Steve Petra and his puppets visited John P. McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on January 13th to kick off the Pick A Reading Partner program. Petra and his talking friends entertained students with a variety of literacy games, such as Pin the Punctuation on the Lobster. The three-week PARP program, in conjunction with the PTA, will include reading challenges and

a book swap. This year’s theme is “Camp Read S’more.” Classes will compete against each other for the highest reading participation. If the school successfully completes the Principal Scholastic Challenge by reaching 80 percent participation, all students will be rewarded with an additional 10 minutes of recess. Students can complete PARP Perks, which are additional activities to receive points for the

Reading Partners scholastic challenge. The children are also encouraged to visit their local library and will receive a PARP Star when checking out a book. “One of the most important skills our children learn is to read,” said Principal Dr. Amanda Lowry. “Reading creates a strong, positive influence and builds imagination, creative thought and a foundation for a lifetime of significant benefits.”

Hands on Art Art students at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District are working on a project that is truly handson. Through the Youth Uplift Challenge led by Students Rebuild, East Lake children are creating artwork under the direction of teacher Patti Krakoff. They start by tracing their hands on a piece of paper and cutting it out. Using pencils, crayons, oil pastels or whatever art supplies they desire, the students then

decorate their paper hands and write inspirational messages. For every hand that is sent in, the Bezos Foundation donates money to Save the Children’s programs to empower youth in Nicaragua and Indonesia. The paper hands will then become part of a larger piece to be created by artist Vik Muniz and displayed in a museum. Ms. Krakoff said that the goal is to have all students at East Lake complete a paper hand by the end

of the year. She said it is exciting that they get to participate in a global initiative, and learn that they can use a skill they have to help others. “I think it is important for the children to understand that there are other kids that don’t have the advantages that they have,” she said. “Additionally, it is an accomplishment for them to have their artwork in a HANDS ON ART - East Lake Elementary School fifth-graders Angelina Cristadoro, museum when they are in left, and Katelin Fass created artwork using their hands that will benefit children in elementary school.” need.
