WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA DAY - Dozens of PSEG Long Island employees recently participated in the nationwide Wreaths Across America Day at both Calverton National Cemetery and Long Island National Cemetery at Pinelawn. PSEG Long Island also donated 500 wreaths to the Calverton site for the group to use at this event in years to come. Every year on a Saturday before Christmas, PSEG Long Island employees join hundreds of other volunteers laying wreaths on military gravesites. This takes place at more than 2,500 locations across all 50 states and many U.S. territories, including Long Island’s two national cemeteries, and on working military vessels. This annual campaign honors fallen service members by laying wreaths at their gravesites for the holidays.

Couples Invited To Free Valentine’s Day Vow Renewal Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Town Clerk Richard LaMarca invite residents to renew their wedding vows at a special ceremony on Valentine’s Day, Wednesday, February 14th, at Oyster Bay Town Hall. Co-sponsored by Raynham Hall Museum, the event will include a reading of America’s First Valentine, which was written on February 14, 1779 in Oyster Bay. The special ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. and will include light refreshments for all guests. “Valentine’s Day is the most romantic day of the year, and many couples celebrate their wedding anniversaries on this special day. We look forward to making this special day even better

as couples renew their marriage vows and declare their endless love for one another,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Couples often select Valentine’s Day to celebrate their relationship,” added Town Clerk LaMarca. “It may be a sentimental choice for couples who had their first date, first kiss, or even engagement on Valentine’s Day. Whatever the reason, we are proud to offer this special vow renewal ceremony at Town Hall.” The ceremony will take place at Oyster Bay Town Hall, 54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay hamlet. The event is offered free of charge to Town residents but reservations are required. Residents interested in renewing their wedding vows should

The story of America’s first Valentine is a proud piece of Oyster Bay history which dates back to the time of the Revolutionary War, as British troops occupied Long Island homes. During the height of the American Revolutionary War, love improbably blossomed between Lt. Col Simcoe and a young patriot named Sally Townsend as the Townsend property served as a headquarters for a regiment of 300 British troops. Lt. Col. Simcoe presented Sally with a poem he wrote asking her to be his Valentine, and his famous poem, entitled ‘Will You Be My Valentine,’ became the first documented written Valentine in America.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announces that the Town has completed a multimillion-dollar flood diversion and control project on several roadways throughout the southern portion of Massapequa. The project, which amounted to upwards of $12 million, was completed at no cost to Town taxpayers as it was fully funded through Federal grant monies awarded to the Town of Oyster Bay. Dozens of police officers, detectives and even their canine helpers visited Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa

School District for Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on Jan. 9. This was the seventh time the school has hosted the event, in which

guest speakers shared their experiences and showed the tools they use to do the job. The law enforcement professionals were family

and friends of Unqua students and staff. They represented numerous police departments including Nassau and

Suffolk counties, New York City and local villages. Each class had at least one visitor throughout the day, and students were encouraged to wear blue. Police officers talked about the different items on their belts, and also allowed students to hold some pieces of equipment such as helmets, radios and shields. During question and answer sessions, youngsters asked about their day-to-day role and memorable experiences on the job. There were several gradelevel presentations. Third graders gathered in the auditorium to meet officers and dogs from Nassau County and New York City canine units. Fourth graders learned about the NYPD’s bomb squad. Law enforcement officers were welcomed with open arms. The student council, under the direction of POLICE GET A HEARTFELT THANK-YOU - Unqua Elementary School third graders enjoyed a presentation from Deanna Musacchia, made canine units during Law Enforcement Appreciation Day on Jan. 9. hung throughout the school featuring the handprints of Unqua students along with a message, “For all you have done and all you will do, I am safe because of you.” Additionally, the student council provided a treat bag for each guest. The bags were filled with candy that symbolized their jobs, such as life savers for their role in helping others and caramel for getting people out of sticky situations. Principal Deanna Catapano thanked Assistant Principal Laura Hulsaver and the teachers for coordinating the visits, as well as all of the police officers who gave their time to speak. She noted that students were highly engaged and interested during the presentations. “Law Enforcement Appreciation Day is a community effort,” Ms. Catapano said. “We always want to show that our law enforcement officers are greatly appreciated.”
