As part of the Intro to Fashion Merchandising coursework, students studied fashion by the decade from the Victorian era to the present. And so, we begin again. The slate has been wiped clean, for now. There is always carryover, damage to be repaired and turmoil to be calmed. Life is like that, for better or worse. As much as a new year cannot undo the happenings of the year prior, each new day is an opportunity for a fresh start of sorts; each hour, each minute even. We have only to forge ahead, to take these chances as they are presented to us. May we all carry this sentiment with us into 2018… and, if you do happen to have a neatly categorized list of goals for the year, give it a glance from time to time; make adjustments as needed, and keep moving forward. That, in itself, is a resolution everyone can get behind.

Concert for a Cause Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District kept a holiday tradition alive by raising money for the MakeA-Wish Foundation. The donation was presented to a representative from the organization at the school’s Make-A-Wish concert on December 22nd. The fifth-grade band, orchestra and chorus each performed a set of Christmas and Hanukkah songs. Jessica Wyman

conducted the band, Michael Molloy directed the orchestra and Brittany Bissonnette led the chorus. In November, Lockhart students participated in a walk-a-thon and received pledges. That turned into $4,401 that was presented by Student Council members to Kathie Lombardi, the manager of national and community alliances for Make-AWish. She talked about an 11-year-old boy named

Sean who received a “super cool” birthday party as a result of last year’s donation from the school. Students then heard about wishes they could fulfill this year and voted. Principal Stephen Scarallo said that in the last 29 years, the school has raised $112,000 for Make-A-Wish. “This school community is very generous,” he said.

of experience. “I could have had the option to travel to the city to go to FIT, but I chose to stay home and go to LIU,” Solorzano said. “And I say to my parents on almost an everyday basis that little did I know how awesome a program Professor Serota has for us. It’s not just for learning in the classroom but for outside experiences. And her experience in the business makes her so hands-on. You couldn’t get that from anybody else. She doesn’t teach you from books. She teaches you from experience.” Being in close proximity to and having business relationships with Herschliefer’s and the Americana Manhasset mall has offered them opportunities to experience hands-on experiential learning. During the semester, they have gone into showrooms, into a trend forecaster, Mood fabrics, and more. “We went to see Philip Lim,” said Perez. “We got to see his showroom. They us his past runway season and how he’s trying to be environmentally conscience about what he does. It was very cool, the entire atmosphere.” “The whole experience – I would say was like a stepby-step for how production takes place for creating a design,” said Solorzano. “It’s like learning a chapter through an experience and talking to people in the industry. We met girls who are probably not so far from our age who have these jobs, who are working for Philip Lim and other brands and getting higher promotions. It’s inspiring to see girls just like us, getting out of college and getting jobs like that. It makes it feel achievable.”

For many, the holiday season is a time of giving and receiving. A lot of us are so fortunate that we get showered with presents and then ring in the New Year with joyous thoughts of new beginnings. But what about the rest of us? Let’s not forget about those who really need our help!

The Long Island Coalition for the Homeless is an organization that was originally founded as the Nassau-Suffolk Partnership for the Homeless in 1985. LICH now works to educate the public and advocates for the development and expansion of permanent, affordable housing - so those working in low-wage jobs and/or on disability and public assistance can have decent, safe housing for themselves and their children. This organization brings together over 60 nonprofits and local government with the mission to help people on Long Island who are facing homelessness or are homeless. Each month, their members come together and listen to current concerns and opportunities within the nonprofit community, learn about openings in housing placements and more. The Coalition runs a popular Boutique in Amityville, right by their main office. The Boutique is open on Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and allows veterans and other neighbors-inneed to access, free of charge, new and gently used essential items such as clothing, housewares and emergency food. This Boutique is much more than a distribution

center, as it engages the community in volunteerism and spreads awareness about the issue of homelessness. The Boutique always welcomes volunteers and donations and offers community service hours to those willing to volunteer! At this point in time, they are currently taking donations for the following items: winter coats, hats, gloves, scarves, toiletries and baby essentials such as wipes and diapers. They are also in need of volunteers for their next sorting event on January 20th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. LICH also offers annual events that you can become involved with such as their “Have a Heart for the Homeless” Candlelight Vigil (scheduled for April 10th, 2018), their Homeless Count and their Backpack Pirates and Supply for our Students events. Their annual Homeless Count Event occurs each January, and is a time when trained volunteers go out across the island to coordinate point-in-time counts of sheltered and unsheltered men, women and children. During this time, they also distribute toiletry kits, sleeping bags and other essential items to the homeless. REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY - December 7th, 2017, marked the 76th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

New Educators Welcomed This year, a crop of 14 new educators joined Nassau BOCES Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs in its ongoing mission to provide Long Islanders with all the skills needed for success in the workplace. These devoted and talented educators are spread among four vital programs: the Adult Evening program, the Adult Learning Center, the Career and Technical Education program, and Long Island High School for the Arts. Three new teachers joined the Adult Evening

program: Cliff Edwards of Oceanside, who teaches Trade Electric; Jeff Feinberg of Bellmore, who teaches Medical Assisting; and William Welsh of Wantagh, who teaches Veterinary Assisting. The Adult Learning Center welcomed 11 new adult educators: Christina Alexander of Roosevelt, Cynthia Buccaran of Locust Valley, Amy Cooke of Levittown, John Davis of Flushing, Charlotte Kalista of Farmingdale, Joanna Mankowski of East Meadow, Reena Mathew of Westbury, Roberta Nilsen of East Meadow, Kris Nordt

of Baldwin, Suzette Rivera of Westbury, and Erin William-Maples of Valley Stream. “All of our new teachers come to us with many years of industry experience,” said Michele Cohen, Principal of the Adult Education Program. “Each of them has decided that teaching is the best way of giving back to their communities and building the future of Long Island business. We put a great deal of effort into creating partnerships with industry, workforce development, and making connections between school and the

real world, so that our students are ready to start a career upon completing our programs.” Three new educators joined the Career and Technical Education program: Guidance Counselor Phillip Bachmann of Long Beach, Carpentry teacher Diane Marinconz of Howard Beach, and Health Skills teacher Elizabeth Young of Stony Brook. “We’re always on the lookout for dynamic, committed people to join our ranks and help our students to be the best they can be,” said Barry Tech

Assistant Principal Pat Dunphy. “Two of our new educators have a wealth of industry experience and have chosen to share that experience with our students, while the third is coming to us with both a business background and a number of years of educational experience. Each of them has different strengths - fertile areas to grow and build upon.” The Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) welcomed two new teachers: Music Instructor Mark Cocheo of Astoria, and Dance Instructor Traci Peterson of Baldwin.

“Each of these new educators raises the bar, both artistically and academically,” said Dr. Chris Rogutsky Bleecker, Principal of LIHSA. “Though they are too humble to tout their own achievements, each of them has an impressive background worthy of Long Island’s top arts school. They are fine additions to our faculty and will be vital in helping us to provide a world-class education to students who are exploring and pursuing careers in the arts.”
