It was well after midnight and our carbon monoxide detector started screaming from our basement. I called the fire dispatch, they told me to wait outside, and soon a firefighter named Jennifer joined me to make sure I was out and that there was no one else in my house. Soon the fire truck with three men on board arrived at our home. One went inside and checked the air quality. I was starting to worry since he was in down there so long. The other two men joined him downstairs. Then the siren stopped and he heard yet another alarm. He disabled both the carbon monoxide detector and a water detector. They told me it was just faulty equipment and the house was safe. It was now after 1 a.m. I thanked them for responding so quickly, for

with Jamie Lynn Ryan Step by Step a professional in the field, drawing on his/her experiences in putting positive psychology into practice. Outside of a couple of psychology courses in high school, I can’t say I’ve ever delved into this area too deeply, much as it does interest me to analyze peoples’ behaviors and how they contribute to our societal mentality. Generally, when one thinks of psychology, it is in a medical context; but this fresh angle has shown that there are plenty of other avenues to explore. As I listened to the latest episode on my way to work one recent morning, I was particularly struck by the sentiment it touched on - that, too often are we focused on looking ahead, planning for the future, reaching goals… and seldom do we take the time to appreciate the present, to savor the current situation in the way we should. It may
not be where we desire to ultimately wind up; but it is somewhere, and that should count for something. Taking a moment for yourself, whether by observing the beauty of a sunrise or sunset, unwinding with a glass of wine and a book, listening to a favorite song, even spending time decompressing via yoga or meditation, can make a world of difference in your own universe. There will always be obstacles to overcome; but the more positivity you fill your life with, the easier the negatives will be to navigate. Simply finding this particular podcast has done wonders itself; taking that 30 minutes weekly to listen to the musings of those on a path to selfdiscovery can only benefit those who are open to receiving their messages. Every day is an exploration; may we enjoy the discoveries each one uncovers along the way.

Pre-School Program Massapequa High School’s Family and Consumer Sciences Department will once again sponsor a preschool program for district residents in the spring. High school students enrolled in the Child Study course have successfully completed the Parenting and Child Development course and are now ready for a handson approach to learning. The students will plan, prepare and implement interdisciplinary activities within a thematic unit for the preschool students. Preschool will begin on or around March 12th, 2018 and continue for approximately 11 weeks
to “graduation.” There are two sessions: Tuesdays and Thursdays or Wednesdays and Fridays, each from 9:55 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Children must attend both days of the chosen session. A donation of $60 per child to help defray expenses is encouraged. To be eligible, children must be between the ages of 3, as of March 12th, 2018, and 5 but not attending kindergarten and must be toilet trained. Enrollment in the popular program is limited to 18 children per session and selection will be by lottery drawing with Massapequa residents and previous students receiving priority. Applications are available
Scholarship Offered Each year, the Long Island Horticultural Society (LIHS) offers scholarships to Long Island college students enrolled full-time or parttime in a horticulture program. In 2018, the Society will offer one scholarship in the amount of $3,000.00. Founded in 1934, the LIHS promotes the study of horticulture on Long Island by helping to further the education of committed students planning a career in the field. Students interested in applying for these
scholarships can find additional information and an application on the LIHS website at www. lihort.org. Applications will be accepted between November 1st, 2017 and March 1st, 2018. The LIHS meets monthly at Planting Fields Arboretum and offers year-round educational programs, events and tours of gardens here and abroad. Membership is open to all Long Island gardeners whether they are professionals, enthusiastic amateurs, or just like to stop and smell the roses.

Dear Fellow Residents: Our extended summer weather seems to have come to an end as I write this newsletter. Today is the first day I had to put the heat on in our house; this is the latest I can remember. This year for the first time, on Halloween the Village closed off Park Boulevard, making it a pedestrian walkway to give our children and our residents a safe trick or treating experience. The feedback received so far is that it was a huge success, and we will be looking to do it again next year. This Board is committed to continuing our great traditions that we have all grown to love.

We have been looking at the long-range forecasts for the winter and some have said it will be cold with a few snow storms. I can assure our residents that the Village is prepared for whatever Mother Nature sends our way. In our efforts to upgrade our equipment, we purchased 2 new trucks that will improve our snow removal efforts. This Board will continue to upgrade our equipment to provide our residents with the service they deserve. Our Village personnel have been busy getting the Village ready for the holiday season. Preparations have been underway this month, readying Park Boulevard for our Annual Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting. The lights are being placed in the trees and the holiday houses are being prepared for the merchants to decorate. This annual tradition is one of my favorites. When you look down Park Boulevard and see thousands of people on the street and all the lights, it looks like a picture of what I like to say is an American Village. I hope to see everyone on Park Boulevard on Saturday, November 25th. On December 2nd, I invite you to our Annual Holiday Open House from 2-4 pm. There will be holiday music performed by our local schools, a special visit from Santa and plenty of goodies for the kids. I would also like to remind everyone to shop and dine locally. We have welcomed new merchants into our Village this year so it is important that we show them our support. On behalf of the entire Village board, staff and our families, we wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and a Happy and Healthy New Year. May God bless you and your families, our great Village, and our Country.

Mail Delivery During & After Snowstorms
The Village is organizing a food drive for the holidays to benefit the food pantry at St. Rose of Lima. Nonperishable items can be dropped off in the lobby at Village Hall.
To help letter carriers deliver mail safely, residents are reminded to maintain a clear path to the mailbox, including steps, porches, walkways and street approach, which will help letter carriers maintain consistent delivery service. Carriers are not required to deliver to locations where these issues create a hazardous condition.
The Village is also participating in the Toys for Tots program sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Residents are invited to drop off new unwrapped toys in the Toys for Tots Box located in the lobby at Village Hall. Toy donations will be accepted until Tuesday, December 12th.

What to do in a Snowstorm
Village Taxes: REMINDER
In the event of a major snowstorm (three inches or more), all residents are urged to clear the streets of all cars. Cars should be placed in driveways, garages, or any other available space. If you do not have off-street parking for your car, Village Law allows the following: During a snow emergency occurring in even numbered years, parking will be permitted on even numbered sides of the streets. During a snow emergency occurring in odd numbered years, parking will be permitted on odd numbered sides of the street. Please remember that streets are often plowed more than once during a typical snowstorm. Residents are advised that plowing is not completed until 24 hours after the snow has stopped. Driveway aprons should not be shoveled out until the plows have opened the street to maximum width. When shoveling your sidewalk or driveway, do not throw the snow onto the street. This will turn to ice, cause a dangerous situation, and may force additional plowing. Snow should be placed on the utility strip or your front lawn. Snow from driveways should be piled on your lawn. Please consider these points and help us to help you during a storm.

Some Good Advice... SMOKE ALARMS
• Make sure your home has working smoke alarms. • Place a smoke alarm on every level including inside each sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Interconnect the alarms so when one sounds, they all sound. • Install smoke alarms and alert devices to assist family members who are deaf or hard of hearing. • Alert devices, such as strobe lights, flash when the smoke alarm sounds. Pillow or bed shakers may be useful to wake a person who is sleeping. The shakers are triggered by the sound of the smoke alarm and shake people awake to warn them of a fire. • Test your alarms at least once a month. Press each test button to make sure it is working. • Review the Consumer Product Safety Commission, www.cpsc.gov, website for information on recalled smoke alarms.

New Village Law - Dumpsters On Private Property Effective October 23, 2017 a dumpster on private property will require a permit. An application for a Dumpster Permit can be obtained from Village Hall. The dumpster must meet certain setbacks and is limited in the time it is permitted to stay on the property. The fee is $25.00. Congressman King spoke about his typical weekly schedule and the committees that he serves on. He maintains a district office in Massapequa Park, barely a mile from the high school. During his visit to the school, he also met with students who are applying to U.S. military service academies. “He’s their congressman,” said social studies teacher

It always raises the level of classroom discussion.” Massapequa High School offers a two-part Advanced Placement government program for seniors. AP U.S. Government and Politics focuses on the nation’s political ideals, institutions, policies and culture, while AP Comparative Government examines political structures of several countries and how similar problems to those faced by the U.S. are solved by different governments.

After spending the last two months learning about government, seniors at Massapequa High School were able to interact with someone who experiences it every day.
