Antibullying Message Kindness, respect and acceptance were among the themes at an antibullying interactive concert at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on November 13th. Students played an integral role in Lee Knight’s Books Alive program,
which was presented by the school and the PTA’s Arts in Education committee. They were invited to come up on stage and perform along with Lee Knight, whose songs were based off of popular children’s books such as “Recess Queen,” “Wonder,” and “Harry
Potter” and “Horton Hears a Who!” Messages included standing up for others, not judging people by their appearance, recognizing that everyone has strengths, and treating others respectfully.

Two dozen athletes from Massapequa High School committed to colleges during a recent national letter of intent signing ceremony. The 24 seniors will continue their academic and athletic pursuits at colleges and universities across the country. The signees included seven students from the boys lacrosse team, six from the baseball team, five from girls lacrosse and three from girls soccer. Each year brings with it gains and losses, milestones and mini-markers of life. With that, each holiday season is a sort of closing ceremony, if you will, a gathering together of family and friends to take stock of the year that was, with the hope that - whether good or bad - the next will be even better. This Thanksgiving, we have the opportunity to spend the day with family that we seldom see, and to make new memories along the way. Over the years, traditions have come and gone, along with many beloved relatives. This void can tend to leave behind traces of sadness, of course; but the chance to gather with those who remain is a priceless one we should always be grateful for. Among the festivities,
this November 28th commemorates the one-year “birthday” of my little baby betta, “Norton von Spudley.” Of course, one can never know the true date; but considering the tiny speck of a fish he was when I purchased him, I’d venture to guess one year is just about right. Last Thanksgiving was a bit of a rough one, coming just a few short days after the passing of my beloved Buddy the Betta - friend, fish and guest columnist extraordinaire. While no subsequent pet can ever truly replace him, my little Spud is certainly a welcome addition to the family. Speaking of new traditions, this year will mark the first in quite some time that I will not be rising at 5 a.m. to see the sunrise and head out

These additional Northfork sites give Long Islanders eight convenient locations throughout Suffolk County, from as far west as Huntington, to and to both North an d South Forks. With generous support from the Suffolk County Office for the Aging, FSL has provided FREE Caregiver Support Services to individuals caring for a person with disabilities (over age 60) since 2005. Children showed their respect for the men and women who have served the United States during Veterans Day programs at McKenna and Lockhart elementary schools in the Massapequa School District. Students at McKenna read “Veterans: Heroes in Our Neighborhood,” a book by former Massapequa teacher Valerie Pfundstein. They then wrote their own stories about veteran heroes in their lives. A group of more than a dozen fifth-graders shared their pieces in a Veterans Day Reader’s Theater
on November 8th in the Senior Center. Instead of a traditional ceremony, McKenna hosted a veteran’s breakfast with students from the school inviting parents, grandparents and other relatives who have served their nation. In addition to the readings and words of thanks from administrators and teachers, kindergartners performed “You’re A Grand Old Flag.” Members of local veteran’s organizations attended Lockhart’s ceremony on November 9th. Children spoke about
the history of Veterans Day. Principal Stephen Scarallo said the day served a dual purpose in honoring veterans while also inspiring others to serve their communities through acts of generosity and charity. Mr. Scarallo and Assistant Principal Ryan Aliperti read a veteran’s roll call of names of local residents who have served in the military. Students performed patriotic tunes, and a member of the Nassau County Police Department played taps.

Personal Touch Red, white and blue paper chains were used to create an American flag in the fourth-grade hallway at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District as a way of marking Veterans Day. Each fourth-grade
student received a blank paper star and wrote the name of a veteran in his or her family. The stars were then added to the flag. Teacher Jessica Shippos said this was the first time they have done this project. “We wanted the students
to think about the men and women who have protected us and our country,” she said. “It gave them an opportunity to reflect on people in their lives who they consider heroes.”

Students throughout the Massapequa School District are becoming more familiar with the engineering design process with an increased focus on STEAM-based activities. At Birch Lane Elementary School, fourth-graders recently explored science, technology, engineering, the arts and math by creating solar ovens. The enrichment activity was led by magnet and STEAM teacher Lindsay Cafiero, and taught students how
they could cook food without electricity. They started with pizza boxes supplied by Phil’s Pizza of Massapequa, then could use any materials found in the classroom such as construction paper, newspapers and aluminum foil. The youngsters explored how energy is transferred and discovered which materials are more conductive. They were able to use their Chromebooks to do research, then worked in teams to create and
implement their designs. Groups then competed to see which solar oven would melt ice the fastest by putting their creations outside on a sunny day. Ms. Cafiero said that as students become more familiar with the engineering design process, they should come up with better and more advanced creations as they move through the different STEAM challenges this year.

Science Study
With clipboards in hand, students at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District observed a “crash site” near the playground and had to record their findings. To mark National STEAM Day, an initiative to promote science, technology, engineering, the arts and math, McKenna students put on their jackets and goggles and went outside to look
at a large black rock that represented a meteorite and a mystery metal object that fell from space. Each class was given 20 minutes to observe on November 8th and 9th. They had to draw sketches and write down the characteristics of the objects before returning to their classrooms for group discussions. Students in the upper grades had to work together to come up with a way to send the mystery metal object back
into space. The purpose of the activity was to promote curiosity and excitement, foster science-based investigation and encourage collaboration. It was organized by magnet and STEAM teacher Michelle Scott and secondgrade teacher Mary Anne Ferraro, who said they wanted to make science fun while stimulating young minds.

1:1 counseling and support groups during calendar year 2017. These groups provide a safe space where caregivers can share their experiences, concerns and successes. It is also a great venue to learn more about community resources. According to a 2015 National Caregiving survey, more than 42 million family caregivers provide unpaid care for an aging parent, spouse or other loved one so that they may age in place. The value of the care is estimated at $450 billion dollars annually. Nearly two thirds (64%) of caregivers report feeling emotionally stressed, but 94 % say that it is important for them to provide the care for their loved one so they can continue to live independently in their own home. “Families often find themselves thrust into caregiving situations based on a crisis situation. They can become quickly overwhelmed by the enormity of the caregiver role and their own limitations based on distance, job obligations, financial restrictions, and other family responsibilities,” said Karen Boorshtein, FSL President. “This is compounded by the lack of information about available services. FSL support groups provide the resources families need and there are no fees charged to those who attend.” Caregiver issues may include stresses related to the actual activities associated with caregiving, fear and worry about a loved one dying, concerns about the caregiver’s own health, and guilt associated with feelings of frustration and anger. This program continues to thrive and develop as a vital resource for caregivers. Connecting with Vets Veterans shared their personal stories with students as Massapequa School District’s Berner Middle School hosted its 11th annual Take a Veteran to School Day program on November 9th. All students gathered in the gymnasium for a morning assembly in which they paid tribute to the men and women who served the United States. Musical selections by the Vocal Points, under the direction of Andrea Gropf, included “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” Executive Assistant to the Principal Barbara Lowell introduced each of the more than 50 veterans who attended that day, and would later visit eighth-
grade social studies classes to chat with students in small groups. Principal Jason Esposito told students that the best gift they can give to a veteran is going up to one and saying “thank you.” The special guests included members of local veteran’s organizations such as the American Legion and VFW, as well as family members of students, administrators, teachers and staff. Many shared photos and other memorabilia from their military service. “I liked hearing their stories, and hearing about how they got into the military or fought in battles or just helped out in the background,” said eighthgrader Emmie McBride.
“This was important for the veterans because they got to pass on their stories to the next generation.” Social studies teacher Noreen Miller, who organized the event, said that all of the conflicts that the veterans fought in are covered in the eighthgrade curriculum. “This is more than students can read in a textbook,” she said. “They can make a connection from what they learn in class by talking to someone who actually experienced it.” The Berner staff created a “Honoring Our Own” wall in the library by bringing in pictures and artifacts documenting the military service of veterans in their own families.

It’s that time of the year, from feasts of plenty to desserts galore, and every party and gathering in between. How do you thrive healthily through the holidays? It can seem like a lost cause. But hopefully, I can share some tips to help you succeed at your goals this season. I started my program in late October 2016 knowing I was headed into the holiday season. At first, I was tempted to wait until after the holidays, but I realized that gatherings, parties, etc. weren’t going to stop because I wanted to get healthy. I needed to find a way to make better choices to support my goals. How do you plan your lifestyle around the holiday season, and what is your ideal outcome? Let’s start by finding out your “Why.” Ask yourself: • Where do you want to be when you wake up on the morning of 1/1/18? • How do you want to feel physically and emotionally? • Why is this important to you? • What would it mean to you to be in a healthy place? • How will this impact your friends and family? Try to paint a picture so you can visually see it with your eyes and feel it with your heart.
Now that you have a goal, what is your approach going to be to achieve it? What are you willing to do to get there? If you’re not willing to do the things necessary to get what you want, then maybe you need to adjust your goal. There are 39 days left in the year as of 11/22/17; if you’re eating 6 healthy meal choices a day, that’s 234 meal choices! How many holiday meal choices may come your way that may not support your goal? Christmas? Holiday Party? Christmas Eve? New Year’s? Birthday Party? Football Games? How many opportunities will you be faced with making a choice that might not move you to your goal? Maybe 5-7 meals out of 234? Experience.” Ms. Delaney said that children can customize their blogs with pictures and graphics, and can choose the colors and fonts. Students are expected to update their blogs on a regular basis and use them to practice their writing with proper spelling, grammar and punctuation. All students in the class can view the blogs and are encouraged to leave kind comments for their classmates.

Students continue to add more color to the hallways of Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus. After the successful completion of a studentdesigned, Chiefs-inspired painting last year by the main entrance, a Mural Club was formed and has been tackling its first project. Ninth-graders recently began work on a 35-foot long, 5-foot high mural on a blank white wall in the hallway across from the Pupil Personnel Services

After receiving student input, art teacher and mural club adviser Sue Perakakis came up with the design, which students traced out in pencil before they began painting afterschool on November 8th. Entertainment was provided by Christopher Macchio, a talented musician. Funds are used to help needy families in the Massapequa community and to provide college scholarships.
