Ninth-graders in the Massapequa School District are doing their part to help the hungry. The National Junior Honor Society at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, under the direction of advisers Michelle Grossi and Erik Lassen, recently completed a successful holiday food drive. In three weeks, students filled dozens of boxes and bags with nonperishable food items such as pasta,

The items were donated to Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Massapequa to help people through Thanksgiving and the holiday season. “This is very important because there are many people who go hungry, and it’s crucial to have proper nutrition to stay healthy and live a happy life,” said ninth-grader Laura Foren. “It’s important for students to start helping the

Helping the Hungry community at an early age to get into the habit and continue that as adults.” Principal Jordan McCaw added that Massapequa is a very giving community, and the success of this food drive shows the power of collaboration and teamwork. “We are very proud of our students for their selflessness and advocacy for those in need,” he said.

Chiefs’ Homecoming Held
The Massapequa Chiefs’ Homecoming Parade was recently held. The day kicked off with a parade through town with students from numerous clubs marching alongside district administrators
and Board of Education members. Parks Commissioner Pinto was the grand marshal. Each class designed a banner for the parade based on their favorite TV sitcom. Half-time presentations
included the marching band and color guard, as well as the cheerleaders and kickline team. The day ended with a 33-7 win over Plainview-Old Bethpage.

It was well after midnight and our carbon monoxide detector started screaming from our basement. I called the fire dispatch, they told me to wait outside, and soon a firefighter named Jennifer joined me to make sure I was out and that there was no one else in my house. Soon the fire truck with three men on board arrived at our home. One went inside and checked the air quality. I was starting to worry since he was in down there so long. The other two men joined him downstairs. Then the siren stopped and he heard yet another alarm. He disabled both the carbon monoxide detector and a water detector. They told me it was just faulty equipment and the house was safe. It was now after 1 a.m. I thanked them for responding so quickly, for reassuring us that all was well and for coming out so late at night. I want all to know that it was a job well done. The last time the carbon monoxide was set off by a faulty connection when a new hot water heater was installed, the firefighters saved my life. The readings in the house were extremely high. My husband and I are here today because of quick actions of our fire department. It should be a warning to all to check the batteries on your smoke, carbon monoxide and water detectors. Scholarship Offered Each year, the Long Island Horticultural Society (LIHS) offers scholarships to Long Island college students enrolled full-time or parttime in a horticulture program. In 2018, the Society will offer one scholarship in the amount of $3,000.00. Founded in 1934, the LIHS promotes the study of horticulture on Long Island by helping to further the education of committed students planning a career in the field. Students interested in applying for these

Topics have ranged from finding our individual purpose in life to reaching long term goals to increasing our kindness toward others and minimizing our natural tendency to be judgmental. Each episode is broken into three segments - “Science Says,” based on a recent scientific study and the research generated by it; “Life Hack,” helpful tips to incorporate the findings of said study into everyday habits; and “Practitioner’s Corner,” a conversation with

Outside of a couple of psychology courses in high school, I can’t say I’ve ever delved into this area too deeply, much as it does interest me to analyze peoples’ behaviors and how they contribute to our societal mentality. Generally, when one thinks of psychology, it is in a medical context; but this fresh angle has shown that there are plenty of other avenues to explore. As I listened to the latest episode on my way to work one recent morning, I was particularly struck by the sentiment it touched on - that, too often are we focused on looking ahead, planning for the future, reaching goals… and seldom do we take the time to appreciate the present, to savor the current situation in the way we should. Chiefs’ Homecoming Held
The Massapequa Chiefs’ Homecoming Parade was recently held. The day kicked off with a parade through town with students from numerous clubs marching alongside district administrators
and Board of Education members. Parks Commissioner Pinto was the grand marshal. Each class designed a banner for the parade based on their favorite TV sitcom. Half-time presentations
included the marching band and color guard, as well as the cheerleaders and kickline team. The day ended with a 33-7 win over Plainview-Old Bethpage.
After spending the last two months learning about government, seniors at Massapequa High School were able to interact with someone who experiences it every day. Congressman Peter King visited the school on November 6th to speak with students in the Advanced Placement government classes. During the informal session in the little theater, students asked Congressman King questions on a variety of domestic and foreign issues. It furthered their understanding about the role of the federal government and how
power is separated between the legislative, executive and judicial branches. He discussed his reasons for voting certain ways and told students that there are more to bills than just their titles. Congressman King spoke about his typical weekly schedule and the committees that he serves on. He maintains a district office in Massapequa Park, barely a mile from the high school. During his visit to the school, he also met with students who are applying to U.S. military service academies. “He’s their congressman,” said social
studies teacher Daniel Bachman. “It’s special that he comes back every single year. It always raises the level of classroom discussion.” Massapequa High School offers a two-part Advanced Placement government program for seniors. AP U.S. Government and Politics focuses on the nation’s political ideals, institutions, policies and culture, while AP Comparative Government examines political structures of several countries and how similar problems to those faced by the U.S. are solved by different governments.
Pre-School Program Massapequa High School’s Family and Consumer Sciences Department will once again sponsor a preschool program for district residents in the spring. High school students enrolled in the Child Study course have successfully completed the Parenting and Child Development course and are now ready for a hands-on approach to learning. The students will plan, prepare and implement interdisciplinary activities within a thematic unit for the preschool students. Preschool will begin on or around March 12th, 2018 and continue for
approximately 11 weeks to “graduation.” There are two sessions: Tuesdays and Thursdays or Wednesdays and Fridays, each from 9:55 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Children must attend both days of the chosen session. A donation of $60 per child to help defray expenses is encouraged. To be eligible, children must be between the ages of 3, as of March 12th, 2018, and 5 but not attending kindergarten and must be toilet trained. Enrollment in the popular program is limited to 18 children per session and selection will be by lottery drawing with Massapequa residents and previous
students receiving priority. Applications are available at Massapequa High School’s front security desk and general office through December 23rd and can be picked up on school days between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Applications may also be downloaded from tinyurl. com/mhspreschool. Copies of completed applications must be returned to the high school’s general office by Tuesday, January 2nd, 2018, and acceptance notifications will be emailed later than month.
